If you have ever searched for fat-burning supplements or ways to accelerate weight loss, you may have come across CLA supplements. Short for conjugated linoleic acid, CLA is a group of fatty acids naturally present in foods such as beef and dairy products and commonly sold as a dietary supplement.

CLA is often promoted as a weight loss and fat-burning supplement that may help reduce body fat while preserving lean muscle. But does it actually work? And is taking CLA supplements safe?

Research has found statistically significant reductions in body weight with CLA, but the actual amount of weight lost tends to be small.

Weight on the weighing scale isn't the only measure of progress.

Some studies suggest CLA may influence body composition, potentially reduce fat mass while maintaining or modestly increasing lean body mass.

For example, a 12-week randomized controlled trial involving overweight and obese women receiving 3 g/day of CLA reported reductions in total body fat, visceral fat and certain other fat compartments compared with placebo.

CLA Combined With Exercise May Affect Body Fat

Could CLA work better when combined with exercise?

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials and two crossover trials found that CLA combined with exercise reduced body fat and insulin resistance compared with exercise alone, particularly in certain subgroups. This is one of the more important concerns for people considering CLA.

Some research suggests that specific CLA isomers may adversely affect insulin sensitivity and blood glucose, particularly in certain people with obesity or metabolic abnormalities.

At the same time, meta-analyses have not consistently demonstrated a clinically important effect across all participants.

Can CLA Affect Cholesterol?

Research on CLA and cholesterol is mixed.
