Giloy Ghana Vati is a potent Ayurvedic formulation that is prepared from the extract of Guduchi which goes by the botanical name Tinospora cordifolia. Giloy, also known as Guduchi or Amrita in Sanskrit has a Tikta (bitter) and Kashaya (astringent) taste. The plant has Snigdha (oily) Guna, Ushna (hot) Virya and Madhura (sweet) Vipaka. Giloy ghana vati is prepared by sun drying the giloy extract. The word ‘ghana’ in ayurveda means extract and it is obtained from the stem of the plant.
Preparation of Giloy Ghana Vati
Giloy stems (freshly cut and washed)
Acacia gum (as a binding agent)
Cut the freshly obtained Giloy stems into small parts and crush them.
Immerse the crushed stems in water and keep it aside for a few hours to prepare the decoction.
After a few hours, the decoction is strained and heated on high flame to get the pure giloy extract.
When the extract thickens and reaches a gel like consistency, put off the flame and allow it to cool.
Dry the extract under direct sun for a few days until there is no moisture left and it becomes crisp and powder in nature.
Now, mix the extract with the binding agent (gum acacia) to hold the powder particles together.
Roll them in your palm into minute round balls to make the vatis.
The prescribed amount is two 250 mg tablets or capsules once or twice daily with meal or one 500 mg tablet or capsule taken regularly with meal.
Prevents Fevers and Viral Infections:
The giloy vati has potent anti-microbial, immune-modulatory and mild anti-pyretic properties which play a vital role in reducing fever, preventing chronic viral and bacterial infections.
Giloy is extensively used in treating gout as it reduces the uric acid levels in the body by actively flushing it through the kidneys and hence, preventing them from getting deposited in the synovial tissues.
Giloy vati having powerful analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties is extremely beneficial in reducing joint and muscle pains, thereby reducing the chances of chronic auto-immune inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.
