Angina - Overview

Angina is a medical condition characterised by chest pain or discomfort that occurs when the heart doesn't get enough blood flow. It's often described as a feeling of tightness, pressure, or squeezing in the chest. Angina is usually caused by a blockage or narrowing of the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood. The condition is often a symptom of underlying coronary artery disease (CAD) and can increase the risk of heart attack. Treatment for angina may involve lifestyle changes, angina medicines, or procedures to improve blood flow to the heart.

Treatment For Angina

Angina is chest pain or discomfort caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscles. Medicines used to treat angina can include angina tablets like nitrates (nitroglycerin) and calcium channel blockers (verapamil, diltiazem), to help to widen the blood vessels and improve the blood flow to the heart. Beta-blockers reduce heart rate and blood pressure, while ranolazine reduces the frequency of angina attacks. Anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs including clopidogrel, aspirin, heparin and apixaban also help prevent blood clots. Chest discomfort can also be treated with nitroglycerin ointment or angina creams, which help relax the blood vessels. The patient may apply this medicine to the skin on the upper body as instructed.
