Introduction About VPL 5MG INJECTION
VPL 5MG INJECTION contains Verapamil which belongs to the group of medicines called Calcium channel blockers. It is used to manage abnormal heart rhythms such as an irregular or rapid heart rate. It may also be used to manage severe hypertension (high blood pressure) and severe angina (chest pain).
VPL 5MG INJECTION is not recommended for use if you have severe low blood pressure, heart failure or second or third-degree heart block (very slow heart rate). VPL 5MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver, kidney diseases. Consult your doctor before receiving it.
VPL 5MG INJECTION should be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding women only if it is considered clearly necessary. Contact your doctor before receiving it.
VPL 5MG INJECTION should be used with caution in newborns, infants and children less than 15 years of age and in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before receiving it.
The most common side effects of receiving VPL 5MG INJECTION are dizziness, headache, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, flushing etc. Contact your doctor if any of the symptoms worsen.

How VPL 5MG INJECTION Works
VPL 5MG INJECTION belongs to Calcium channel blockers works by changing the amount of calcium entering into the muscle cells in your heart and blood vessels. This leads to change in the strength and speed with which your heart beats. Thus, helps to manage irregular heartbeats.
It also opens up the blood vessels so blood can be pumped around the body more easily. This helps more oxygen to get to your heart muscle and relieves chest pain and also lower your blood pressure.
How to use VPL 5MG INJECTION
VPL 5MG INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor as an injection or infusion into a vein (Intravenously). Your doctor will decide the exact dose and duration of management depending upon the type of pain relief you need, age, body weight and condition.
Side Effects Of VPL 5MG INJECTION
Common
- dizziness
- headache
- slow heartbeat, low blood pressure
- flushing
- constipation, nausea
- swollen feet or ankles
Uncommon
- irregular or fast heartbeat
- stomach pain
- tiredness
Rare
- a tingling or prickling feeling on the skin
- tremor
- drowsiness
- a ringing sound in the ears (tinnitus)
- vomiting
- sweating a lot more than usual
Stop receiving VPL 5MG INJECTION and consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- signs of liver injury such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, a fever or tenderness around the stomach
- palpitations, chest pains for the first time or chest pains becoming more frequent, swollen ankles, hot and painful hands or feet
- symptoms of an allergic reaction such as unexpected wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth, lips or tongue or severe skin rash
How To Manage Side Effects
Dizziness:
Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any machines while you are feeling dizzy. Do not drink alcohol, as it can aggravate your dizziness. Contact your doctor if your dizziness did not improve.
Headache:
Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or ORS (Oral Rehydrating Solution) and apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if necessary. Contact your doctor if your headache did not improve.
Nausea and vomiting:
Receive VPL 5MG INJECTION, with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Contact your doctor if your nausea and vomiting did not improve.
Constipation:
Take fiber-rich foods in your diet such as fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grain cereals and drink plenty of fluids. Exercise more regularly and stay active. Contact your doctor if constipation persists.
Stomach pain:
Try to have smaller meals but take frequently. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Do not self-manage and contact your doctor if the stomach pain did not improve.
Warning & Precautions
Pregnancy
VPL 5MG INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is considered essential. Contact your doctor before receiving it.
Breastfeeding
VPL 5MG INJECTION should be used during breastfeeding women only if it is considered clearly necessary. Contact your doctor before receiving it.
Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or operate heavy machines if you dizziness and tired while taking this medicine.
Alcohol
Avoid alcohol consumption while receiving this medicine as it may lead to unwanted effects.
Kidney
VPL 5MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with kidney diseases. Consult your doctor before receiving it.
Liver
VPL 5MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver diseases. Consult your doctor before receiving VPL 5MG INJECTION.
Allergy
Do not receive VPL 5MG INJECTION if you are allergic to verapamil or to any other ingredients of this medicine.
Heart Disease
VPL 5MG INJECTION is not recommended for use if you have severe low blood pressure as a result of severe heart problems (such as during shock) or if you have heart failure or second or third-degree heart block (impaired nerve signal in the heart – causing a very slow heartbeat) or an electrical abnormality of the heart (atrial fibrillation/flutter) causing periods of very fast heartbeat (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome or Lown-Ganong-Levine syndrome) or have problems with your heart valves or ‘sick sinus syndrome’ (irregular heartbeat) and do not have a pacemaker. Consult your doctor before receiving it. Inform your doctor if you have first-degree AV block or an irregular heartbeat.
Others
Before receiving VPL 5MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you:
- have any neuromuscular diseases (Ex. myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton Syndrome or advanced Duchenne muscular dystrophy)
- are having surgery
Use in paediatrics:
VPL 5MG INJECTION should be used with caution in newborns, infants and children less than 15 years of age. Consult your doctor before receiving VPL 5MG INJECTION.
Use in geriatrics:
VPL 5MG INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before receiving VPL 5MG INJECTION.
Interactions
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before receiving VPL 5MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- propranolol, metoprolol, ivabradine, flecainide, quinidine, digoxin, digitoxin and disopyramide (used to manage high blood pressure, abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia) and other heart conditions)
- alpha-blockers (used to manage high blood pressure, heart conditions and prostate disorders) Ex. prazosin and terazosin
- statins (used to lower cholesterol levels) Ex. atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin
- medicines used to manage depression, anxiety or psychosis (Ex. St John’s Wort, imipramine, buspirone, lithium)
- glyburide, metformin (used to manage diabetes mellitus)
- aspirin (used to relieve pain and reduce fever)
- midazolam (used as a sedative or anaesthetic)
- immunosuppressants (used to manage organ transplant rejection) Ex. ciclosporin, sirolimus, everolimus and tacrolimus
- theophylline (used to manage asthma)
- doxorubicin (used to manage cancer)
- cimetidine (used to manage indigestion or stomach ulcers)
- rifampicin (used to manage tuberculosis)
- carbamazepine, phenobarbital or Phenobarbitone (used to manage fits)
- ritonavir (used to manage HIV)
- erythromycin, clarithromycin and telithromycin (used to manage bacterial infections)
- colchicine, sulfinpyrazone (used to manage gout)
- almotriptan (used to manage migraine)
- oral anticoagulants (used to thin blood) Ex. dabigatran, apixaban, rivaroxaban, edoxaban
B. Drug – Food interactions:
Do not drink grapefruit juice whilst taking VPL 5MG INJECTION as it can affect the absorption of this medicine.
Overdosage:
VPL 5MG INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor in a hospital and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. The symptoms of overdosage include hypotension (low blood pressure), shock, loss of consciousness, first and second-degree AV block (very slow heartbeat), total AV block with total AV dissociation, escape rhythm, asystole (cessation of heart function), bradycardia (slow heart rate) up to high degree AV block and, sinus arrest, high blood sugar levels, stupor and metabolic acidosis (build-up of acid in the body) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (breathing problem). Death has occurred as a result of the overdose.
