    Introduction About UTODIN TABLET

    UTODIN TABLET contains Ritodrine which belongs to a group of medicines called Tocolytics. It is indicated for the management of uncomplicated Premature labour.

    Premature labour occurs when regular contractions result in the opening of the cervix after 20th week and before 37th week of pregnancy. It can result in premature birth. The earlier premature birth happens, the greater the health risks for the baby.

    UTODIN TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with known hypersensitivity reactions, cardiac disease like myocardial ischaemia, antepartum haemorrhage, intra-uterine infection, intra-uterine fetal death, placenta praevia, abruptio placenta, threatened miscarriage, cord compression, eclampsia or severe pre-eclampsia.

    Before taking this medicine inform your doctor if you have cardiac diseases, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, hypokalaemia, diabetes mellitus, mild to moderate pre-eclampsia, blood pressure and pulse rate and avoid over-hydration while taking this medicine.

    There are no adequate and well controlled studies of effects in pregnant women before 20 weeks gestation. It should not be used before the 20th week of pregnancy. Studies in pregnant women from the 20th week of gestation onwards have not shown increased risk of fetal abnormalities. Therefore, it should be used only when clearly indicated by the physician.

    The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, flushing, sweating, tremor, hypokalaemia, tachycardia, palpitations, hypotension (left lateral position throughout infusion to minimize risk), uterine bleeding and pulmonary oedema. Consult your doctor if any of the above side effects worsen or persist for a long duration.

    How UTODIN TABLET Works

    UTODIN TABLET belongs to β2–adrenergic agonist which relaxes the uterus by stimulating the β2–adrenergic receptors of the uterine muscle, which causes a decrease in the intensity and frequency of uterine contractions. It eases the contraction of the uterus and helps relaxing it, thereby managing premature delivery.

    How to use UTODIN TABLET

    Take this medicine as directed by your physician. Swallow the medicine as a whole with a glass of water and do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose for you depending upon your age, body weight and health condition.

    Side Effects Of UTODIN TABLET

    Common

    • nausea, vomiting
    • flushing
    • sweating
    • tremor
    • hypokalaemia
    • tachycardia, palpitations
    • hypotension (left lateral position throughout infusion to minimize risk)
    • uterine bleeding
    • pulmonary oedema
    • chest pain or tightness
    • arrhythmia
    • salivary gland enlargement
    • leucopenia, agranulocytosis
    • liver function abnormalities including increased transaminases and hepatitis
    • headache
    • nervousness
    • anxiety

    Rare

    Stop taking and contact your doctor immediately, if you have experience the following after taking UTODIN TABLET:

    • lung swelling
    • severe allergic reactions

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Headache

    Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids such as water and apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if necessary. Do not consume alcohol. Contact your doctor if headache worsens.

    Nausea And Vomiting

    Try to take this medicine with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food.

    Allergy

    Lungs

    Use with Caution

    UTODIN TABLET should be used with caution in patients suffering from lung disease such as bronchial asthma. Consult your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.

    Heart Disease

    Consult your doctor

    UTODIN TABLET is not recommended in patients with heart diseases such as myocardial ischaemia. It should be used with caution in patients suffering from myocardial insufficiency, arrhythmias. Consult your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.

    Others

    Do not take UTODIN TABLET, if you have:

    • antepartum haemorrhage
    • intra-uterine infection
    • intra-uterine fetal death
    • placenta praevia
    • abruptio placenta
    • threatened miscarriage
    • cord compression
    • eclampsia or severe preeclampsia

    Before taking UTODIN TABLET, inform your doctor if you have:

    • hypertension
    • hyperthyroidism
    • hypokalaemia
    • diabetes mellitus
    • mild to moderate preeclampsia
    • pulmonary oedema

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before taking UTODIN TABLET inform your doctor if your taking the following medicines:

    • corticosteroids
    • diuretics (acetazolamide, loop diuretics and thiazides)
    • theophylline (used to manage breathing problems)
    • sympathomimetic medicines
    • β–adrenergic blocking drugs
    • anesthetics (used for surgery)
    • neuromuscular blockers such as pancuronium, vecuronium
    • potassium-depleting medicines

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally took too much of this medicine, consult your doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdose includes tachycardia (maternal and fetal), palpitation, cardiac arrhythmia, hypotension, nervousness, tremor, nausea, and vomiting.
