    Introduction About UREKA 100MG(L)

    UREKA 100MG(L) contains Allopurinol which belongs to a group of medicines called Enzyme inhibitors. It is used to gout, uric acid nephropathy, hyperuricemia, uric acid renal calculi and calcium oxalate renal calculi. Gout is a form of arthritis due to high levels of uric acid in the body and this uric acid builds up in the joints and tendons as crystals causing severe pain, redness and tenderness in joints.

    Before taking UREKA 100MG(L), inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, high blood pressure or heart problems, thyroid, cancer or Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, gout attack, lactose or galactose intolerance and glucose-galactose malabsorption. UREKA 100MG(L) should be used with caution in pregnant women and it is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it passes through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking it.

    UREKA 100MG(L) is not recommended for use in children below children under 15 years of age except in some types of cancer such as leukaemia and certain enzyme disorders such as Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. UREKA 100MG(L) should be used with caution in elderly patients above 65years of age. Consult your doctor before taking it. The most common side effects of taking UREKA 100MG(L) are skin rash and increased levels of thyroid stimulation hormone in blood. Consult with your doctor if any of these worsens or doesn’t improve.

    Uses Of UREKA 100MG(L)

    It is used to manage:

    • gout
    • uric acid nephropathy
    • hyperuricemia
    • uric acid renal calculi (prophylaxis)
    • calcium oxalate renal calculi (prophylaxis)

    How UREKA 100MG(L) Works

    UREKA 100MG(L) works by stopping the enzyme (xanthine oxidase) which is responsible for production of uric acid. Thus lowering the levels of uric acid in blood and urine and decreases the incidence of gout symptoms.

    How to use UREKA 100MG(L)

    Take UREKA 100MG(L) as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicines with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of UREKA 100MG(L)

    Common

    • skin rash
    • increased thyroid-stimulating hormone levels in the blood

    Uncommon

    • nausea, vomiting
    • diarrhoea
    • abdominal pain

    Rare

    • liver problems (liver inflammation, jaundice)

    Stop taking UREKA 100MG(L) and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • allergic reaction symptoms such as flaking skin, boils or sore lips and mouth, sudden wheeziness, fluttering or tightness in the chest and collapse
    • serious hypersensitivity reactions characterized by fever, joint pain, abnormalities in blood, bleeding in the lips, mouth, eyes, nose or genitals, ulcers of the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, conjunctivitis (red and swollen eyes), widespread blisters or peeling

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Diarrhea

    Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juices to keep you hydrated. Do not take any medicine on your own for managing diarrhea. Contact your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

    Nausea And Vomiting

    Try to take this medicine with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.

    Skin rash Or Itching

    Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate the skin. Do not scratch the affected area. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Regularly use moisturizer to soothe and hydrate the affected area. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.

    Stomach Pain

    Rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or try to have smaller meals. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Do not self-manage and contact your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Use with Caution

    Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel drowsy, giddy or have problems with co-ordination after taking UREKA 100MG(L).

    Kidney

    Use with Caution

    UREKA 100MG(L) should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking.

    Liver

    Use with Caution

    UREKA 100MG(L) should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking.

    Allergy

    Contraindicated

    Do not take UREKA 100MG(L) if you are allergic to Allopurinol or any other ingredients of this medicine.

    Heart Disease

    Use with Caution

    UREKA 100MG(L) should be used with caution in patients with heart problems. Consult your doctor before taking.

    Use In Pediatrics

    Contraindicated

    UREKA 100MG(L) is not recommended in children and adolescents below 15 years of age except in some types of cancer (leukaemia) and certain enzyme disorders such as Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Consult with your child’s doctor before giving it to your child.

    Use In Geriatrics

    Use with Caution

    UREKA 100MG(L) should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years). Consult your doctor before taking.

    Others

    Before taking UREKA 100MG(L) inform your doctor if you have:

    • Lesch-Nyhan syndrome
    • thyroid problems
    • high blood pressure
    • an acute attack of gout
    • cancer (especially leukaemia)
    • intolerance to some sugars

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before taking UREKA 100MG(L), inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • aspirin (medicine used to manage heart diseases, pain)
    • theophylline (medicine used for asthma and breathing disorders)
    • medicines used to manage epilepsy (Ex. phenytoin, carbamazepine)
    • vidarabine (used to manage herpes simplex or chicken pox)
    • medicines used to manage bacterial infections (Ex. ampicillin and amoxicillin)
    • didanosine (used to manage HIV infection)
    • medicines used to manage diabetes (Ex. chlorpropamide and tolbutamide)
    • cytostatics (medicines stop the cell growth in cancer) Ex. cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, bleomycin, procarbazine, alkyl halogenides
    • azathioprine (medicines used for rheumatoid arthritis and after organ transplants)
    • medicines used to manage high blood pressure, heart failure (Ex. captopril)
    • medicines used to thin the blood (Ex. dicoumarol, phenprocoumon, warfarin)
    • medicines used to reduce uric acid levels, gout (Ex. probenecid, salicylate)
    • aluminum hydroxide (medicines used to manage acidity)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of UREKA 100MG(L), consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and dizziness.

    Q: How UREKA 100MG(L) works?

    A: UREKA 100MG(L) works by stopping the enzyme (xanthine oxidase) which is responsible for production of uric acid. Thus, lowering the levels of uric acid in blood and urine and decreases the incidence of gout symptoms.

    Q: Does UREKA 100MG(L) affect kidney?

    A: Yes. UREKA 100MG(L) might affect the kidney. Inform your doctor priorly if you have any kidney diseases or are on dialysis. Your doctor might consider adjusting the dose of UREKA 100MG(L) for you. Consult your doctor before taking.

    Q: What happens if I suddenly stop taking UREKA 100MG(L)?

    A: Do not stop UREKA 100MG(L) unless you told by doctor. If you stop taking UREKA 100MG(L) suddenly, there is a high risk of gout attack or you will get serious side effects. Consult your doctor before stopping.

    Q: Can UREKA 100MG(L) cause joint pain?

    A: Yes. UREKA 100MG(L) can cause joint pain. But it is a rare side effect. If you develop any of these symptoms stop the medication and contact your healthcare provide.                                                                       

    Q: Does UREKA 100MG(L) affect my ability to drive?

    A: Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel drowsy, giddy or have problems with co-ordination after taking UREKA 100MG(L). You can resume with your activities after you feel normal again.

    Q: If I am having a gout attack, will an extra dose of UREKA 100MG(L) help me?

    A: No. UREKA 100MG(L) is not a pain reliever and does not show its effect immediately. If you have an attack of gout while taking UREKA 100MG(L), keep taking it at the same dose. Do not stop taking it. Your doctor may advise you to take a pain reliever medicine You can also apply icepacks or cold compress and rest the affected joint, to reduce pain. See your doctor if the pain and inflammation does not show improvement in 24 hours.
