    Introduction About TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION

    TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION contains Chloramphenicol which belongs to the group of medicine called Antibiotics. It is used to manage typhoid fever, bacterial meningitis, rickettsial infections, intraocular infections. It is also used in management when other antibiotics are not effective or unsuitable.

    Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection that can spread throughout the body, affecting many organs, without proper management, it can cause serious complications and can be fatal.

    Bacterial meningitis is a serious and life-threatening form of meningitis that occurs due to a bacterial infection.

    Rickettsial infections is a bacterial infection that are caused by an unusual type of bacteria that can live only inside the cells of another organism. Most of these infections are spread through ticks, mites, fleas or lice.

    Before receiving this medicine, inform your doctor if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to chloramphenicol. During the therapy your doctor might recommend you for routine blood tests to monitor, as chloramphenicol can damage blood cells.

    Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctors before receiving this medicine. Consult your doctor for advice.

    The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, weakness, soreness at injection site. Consult your doctor if any of the above side effects worsen or persist for a longer duration.

    Uses Of TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION

    It is used to manage:

    • typhoid fever
    • bacterial meningitis
    • rickettsial infections
    • intraocular infections

    How TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION Works

    Chloramphenicol is a semi-synthetic antibiotic. It diffuses through the bacterial cell wall and binds to the ribosome of the bacteria, thereby managing bacteria making an essential nutrient required for growth and multiplication. In time, the number of bacteria is reduced and the infection is controlled.

    How to use TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION

    TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION will be administered intramuscularly (into a muscle) or given intravenously (into a vein) by your doctor or nurse. Your doctor will administer the correct dose for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION

    Common

    • soreness at the injection site
    • fever
    • skin rash, itching, swelling or hives
    • headache
    • nausea, vomiting
    • diarrhoea
    • white, furry, sore tongue and mouth
    • sore and itchy vagina and white discharge
    • eye pain, numbness, blurred vision or blind spots
    • unusual tiredness, weakness, bleeding or bruising more easily than normal

    Rare

    Contact your doctor immediately, if you experience:

    • blood and lymphatic system disorders such as blood dyscrasias including aplastic anaemia, hypoplastic anaemia, thrombocytopenia and granulocytopenia, pancytopenia and bone marrow depression
    • glossitis and stomatitis and enterocolitis
    • peripheral neuritis
    • psychiatric disorders such as mild depression, mental confusion and delirium
    • immune system disorders such as anaphylaxis, herxheimer reactions
    • skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders such as angioedema, macular and vesicular rashes, urticaria
    • new-born or premature infants, where the skin appears grey and the infant is listless and weak, symptoms such as vomiting, refusal to suck, fast irregular breathing, swelling of the stomach, blue discolouration or green coloured diarrhoea
    • red raised areas on your skin which may look like spots or several inches across, which cause itchiness
    • eye disorders such as optic neuritis, numbness

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Nausea and Vomiting:

    Receive this medicine with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food.

    Diarrhoea:

    Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juices to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid taking any medicine on your own for managing diarrhoea. Consult your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

    Headache:

    Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if required. Do not consume too much of alcohol. Consult your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

    Skin rash:

    Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate your skin further. Do not scratch the affected area. Use protective clothing when going outdoors. Regularly moisturize your skin. Consult your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

    Pregnancy

    TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

    Breastfeeding

    TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION is not recommended for use in breast feeding women. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Do not drive or use any machines as this TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION may cause tiredness.

    Kidney

    TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney problems. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

    Liver

    TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver problems. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

    Allergy

    Do not receive this medicine if you are allergic (hypersensitive) or Chloramphenicol or any ingredients of this medicine.

    Others

    TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION is not recommended for use if you:

    • have any infections

    Use in pediatrics:

    TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in children. Your doctor will administer the right dose depends on your child’s age, body weight and disease condition. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

    Use in geriatrics:

    TROMYCETIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

    Interactions

    A. Drug - Drug interactions:

    Inform your physician if you are taking:

    • alfentanil (used to manage pain)
    • oral contraceptives containing estrogen  
    • phenobarbitone and rifampicin
    • sulphonamides, metronidazole
    • immunosuppressants such as tacrolimus
    • medicines that may suppress the bone marrow such as carbamazepine, penicillamine
    • warfarin (used to manage blood clot)
    • phenytoin (manages epilepsy)
    • other antibiotics such as azithromycin, erythromycin
    • gliclazide, tolbutamide (used to manage diabetes)

    Overdosage:

    It is unlikely to receive an overdose since it will be administered by your doctor or nurse, if you experience any unusual reactions, consult your doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdosage includes nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, effects on blood cells and blood clotting.
