Introduction About TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT
TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT is a combination of Dexamethasone and Tobramycin which belongs to the group of medicines called Corticosteroids and Antibiotics respectively. It is used to manage inflammation and infection in the eyes/ears.
It also helps in reducing pain, redness, itching and/or burning or stinging sensation in the eyes or ears following surgery (such as cataract or corneal refractive surgery). It is typically used in conditions which involves the risk of both eye/ear inflammation and infection such as during injuries or post-surgery.
Use this medicine exactly as instructed by your physician. Misuse or overuse of this medicine may lead to unwanted side effects. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove the lens before applying TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT and wait for at least 15 minutes before reinsertion. TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT is suitable for use both in adults and in children aged 2 years and above.
Before using TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT inform your doctor if you have severe viral or fungal eye infections. You must also inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, diabetes, joint pain, muscle problems, parkinsonism or any disorders that may cause eye tissue layer thinning as a precaution.
Do not use TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT without consulting your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The most common side effects of using TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT are mild eye irritation or burning sensation, watery eyes, increased eye pressure and taste changes. Consult your doctor if any of these side effect worsens.
Uses Of TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT
It is used in adults and in children (aged 2 years or above) to:
- Manage and manage infection and inflammation of eyes/ears
- Reduce pain, redness, itching or burning/stinging sensation following surgery in the eyes or ears
How TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT Works
TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT contains two medicines namely, Dexamethasone and Tobramycin. Dexamethasone is a steroid medication. It blocks the release of certain chemicals in the body (such as prostaglandins) that causes inflammation, redness and swelling. When applied topically on the eyes/ears, it reduces redness, soreness, pain, itching and swelling.
Tobramycin is an antibiotic. When applied topically on the eyes/ears, it kills the susceptible bacteria that causes infection. Collectively, this medicine reduces inflammation and infection of the eyes and ears.
How to use TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT
Use TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT as advised by your physician. It is for ophthalmic use only. Take the required quantity of the medicine on your fingertip and gently apply it on the affected eyes or ears.
If you wear soft contact lenses, remove the lens before applying TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT and wait for at least 15 minutes before reinsertion.
Wash your hands before and after application. Leave a time gap of at least 5 minutes between this medicine and other eye medicines.
Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and health condition.
Side Effects Of TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT
Common
- mild irritation and burning sensation after application

- headache

- throat tightness

Stop using TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, throat, tongue causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
- severe skin reactions with blistering and peeling of skin
- severe eye pain, redness, irritation and vision changes
- signs of problems in adrenal gland (such as slowing growth, round face, swelling or weight gain around the face and the trunk, weakness, dizziness while standing up, fever, weight loss, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, sweating, changes in mood or personality and joint and muscle pains)
How To Manage Side Effects
Eye irritation:
Wash your eyes with plain cold water. Place an ice pack on your eye to ease the irritation. Avoid straining your eyes by looking at mobile phones, laptops or television. Wear protective eyeglasses while going outdoors.
Blurred vision:
Close your eyes and relax. Do not strain your eyes by looking at mobile phones, laptops or television. Avoid driving or operating any heavy tools or machines while your vision is blur. Consult your doctor if you experience blurred vision for a prolonged period.
Warning & Precautions
Pregnancy
TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered necessary by the physician. Therefore, consult your doctor before using it.
Breastfeeding
TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless considered necessary by the physician. Therefore, consult your doctor before using it.
Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or operate any heavy tools or machinery if you experience blurred vision after using TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT.
Allergy
Do not use TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT if you are allergic to Dexamethasone or Tobramycin.
Others
TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT is not recommended for use if you:
- have severe viral or eye fungal infections
- have an eye infection that produces sticky pus
- have severe eye redness for unknown reasons
Before using TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT inform your doctor if you:
- wear soft contact lenses
- have rheumatoid arthritis (joint pain and inflammation)
- have fluid build-up in the front portion of the eyes (Fuch’s dystrophy)
- recently had an eye surgery or corneal transplant
- have ulceration or wounds in the eye
- have diabetes
- have myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness)
- have parkinsonism (a brain disorder causing shakiness, involuntary movements)
Use in Pediatrics:
TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT can be used in children and adolescents (aged 2 years or above). It is not recommended for use in children (aged below 2 years) due to lack of safety data. Therefore, consult your doctor before administration.
Use in Geriatrics:
TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT should be used with caution in elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
Interactions
A. Drug - Drug interactions:
Before using TOBAGRAM D EYE OINTMENT, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:
- medicines used to manage HIV infections such as ritonavir, cobicistat
- medicines used to manage glaucoma (such as timolol, pindolol, acetazolamide, brinzolamide)
- other eye medicines used to reduce inflammation
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally used excessive amount of this medicine, rinse your eyes or ears with warm water. If still irritation persists, consult your doctor for advice. If you or anyone else accidentally swallowed this medicine, consult your doctor immediately.
