    Introduction About TAVIN L

    TAVIN L is a combination of Lamivudine and Tenofovir which belongs to the group of medicines called Antiviral agents. It is used to manage HIV (Human Immunodeficiency virus) infection in adults and children aged above 18 years. It is also used in combination with other antiretroviral agents.

    HIV is the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and symptoms include weight loss, fever or night sweats, fatigue and recurrent infections. Prior to the management, your doctor may order several blood tests to assess your kidney and liver function. Before taking this medicine inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection or hepatic dysfunction or lung disease such as tuberculosis. TAVIN L is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered clearly necessary.

    TAVIN L is generally not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. TAVIN L is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. TAVIN L should be used with caution in elderly patients aged 65 years or above. Contact your doctor before taking. The most common side effects of taking TAVIN L are nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating, flatulence, fever, tiredness, rash, pain, depression and hair loss. Contact your doctor if any of the side effects worsen.

    How TAVIN L Works

    TAVIN L helps to manage HIV infection, where Lamivudine and Tenofovir inhibit the activity of reverse transcriptase enzyme (used by HIV for making copies of it) after incorporation into viral DNA, causes DNA chain termination and works against the virus.

    How to use TAVIN L

    Take this medicine as advised by your physician. Swallow this medicine as whole with a glass of water and do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the right dose depends on the age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of TAVIN L

    Common

    • nausea
    • vomiting
    • headache
    • diarrhea
    • stomach pain
    • bloating
    • flatulence
    • tiredness or lack of energy
    • dizziness
    • fever, feeling of being unwell
    • muscle pain and discomfort
    • joint pain
    • difficulty in sleeping (insomnia)
    • cough, runny nose
    • rash
    • hair loss
    • decreases in phosphate in the blood
    • liver problems

    Uncommon

    • pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
    • damage to kidney tubule cells
    • thrombocytopenia (decrease in platelet count)
    • anaemia (low red blood cell count)
    • neutropenia (decrease in white blood cell count)
    • elevated liver enzymes
    • decreases in potassium in the blood
    • increase in creatinine in the blood
    • breakdown of muscle, softening of the bones or bone pain, fractures
    • muscle pain, muscle weakness

    Rare

    • increase in an enzyme (amylase)
    • inflammation of the kidney, increased urine frequency, and feeling thirsty
    • kidney problems
    • softening of the bones
    • lactic acidosis
    • serious allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat results in difficulty in swallowing or breathing

    Stop taking TAVIN L and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • lactic acidosis (symptoms include feel very weak or tired, unusual muscle pain, breathing difficulty, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, feel cold, especially in your arms and legs, dizziness or lightheadedness, rapid heart rate)
    • liver disease (hepatomegaly or steatosis) such as yellowing of skin or the white part of your eyes (jaundice), dark or tea coloured urine, light-coloured stools, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, stomach pain
    • pancreatitis (symptoms include severe upper stomach-area pain, with or without nausea and vomiting)

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Bloating

    Eat smaller and frequent meals. Eat and exercise regularly. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.

    Diarrhea

    Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juices to keep you hydrated. Do not take any medicine on your own for managing diarrhea. Contact your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

    Dizziness Or Drowsiness

    Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operate any machines while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume alcohol, as it can aggravate your dizziness. Contact your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

    Headache

    Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes and apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if necessary. Contact your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

    Nausea And Vomiting

    Take this medicine with, or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy foods.

    Stomach Discomfort

    Try to rest and relax. Eat small meals but take frequently. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.

    Breastfeeding

    Driving and Using Machines

    Use with Caution

    Do not drive or operate any machines, if you feel dizziness, after taking TAVIN L.

    Alcohol

    Consult your doctor

    Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking this medicine, it can aggravate your existing condition.

    Kidney

    Use with Caution

    TAVIN L should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease such as acute renal failure and end-stage renal disease. Contact your doctor before taking.

    Liver

    Use with Caution

    TAVIN L should be used with caution in patients with liver disease such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection or hepatic dysfunction. Consult your doctor before taking.

    Allergy

    Use with Caution

    Do not take TAVIN L if you are allergic to Lamivudine, Tenofovir or to other ingredients of this medicine.

    Lungs

    Use with Caution

    TAVIN L should be used with caution in patients with lung disease such as tuberculosis. Contact your doctor before taking.

    Use In Pediatrics

    Contraindicated

    TAVIN L is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Contact your doctor before taking.

    Use In Geriatrics

    Use with Caution

    TAVIN L should be used with caution in elderly patients aged 65 years or above. Contact your doctor before taking.

    Others

    Before taking TAVIN L, inform your doctor if you:

    • have pancreatitis
    • have bone problems such as osteonecrosis, osteoporosis or low bone mineral density (BMD) or history of bone fractures
    • have AIDS or others infection
    • have autoimmune disorders (Ex. Graves’disease, polymyositis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome)
    • have immune reconstitution syndrome
    • have fanconi syndrome
    • have opportunistic infections  
    • have symptoms of infection include muscle weakness, weakness beginning in the hands and feet and moving up towards the trunk of the body, palpitations, tremor or hyperactivity
    • are overweight

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before taking TAVIN L inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • medicines used to manage HIV infection or hepatitis B infection (Ex. disoproxil, tenofovir alafenamide, didanosine, emtricitabine, lamivudine, adefovir dipivoxil, atazanavir lopinavir/ritonavir, darunavir)
    • medicines that may damage your kidneys (Ex. gentamycin, pentamidine or vancomycin (for bacterial infection)
    • amphotericin B (used for fungal infection)
    • foscarnet, ganciclovir, or cidofovir (used for viral infection)
    • interleukin-2 (used to manage cancer)
    • tacrolimus (medicines used to suppress immune system)
    • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (used to relieve bone or muscle pains) (Ex. diclofenac, ibuprofen)
    • co-trimoxazole (used to manage bacterial infection)
    • cladribine (medicine used for hairy cell leukaemia)
    • ledipasvir, sofosbuvir, velpatasvir, voxilaprevir, ribavirin (medicines used to manage hepatitis C infection)
    • trimethoprim (used for urinary tract infections)
    • sorbitol (medicines used to manage constipation)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally took too much of this medicine, consult your doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdose include lactic acidosis (excess lactic acid in the blood), abdominal pain caused by inflammation of the pancreas, damage to kidney tubule cells and worsening of liver disease.
