Introduction About SYNOM DX SYRUP
SYNOM DX SYRUP is a combination of Ammonium Chloride, Bromhexine, Dextromethorphan and Menthol which belongs to the group of medicines called Expectorant, Mucolytic, Cough Suppressant, Demulcent or soothing agent.
SYNOM DX SYRUP is used for the symptomatic management of irritating and hacking cough. It is also used to manage cough associated with upper respiratory tract infections, bronchitis (inflammation of lining of bronchioles), pulmonary congestion (too much fluid in the lungs).
SYNOM DX SYRUP is not recommended for use in patients with peptic ulcer, persistent or chronic cough, as occurs with smoking, asthma or lung disease known as emphysema or have respiratory failure or are at risk of developing respiratory failure. Contact your doctor before taking it.
SYNOM DX SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with moderate to severe liver disease, poor kidney function. Contact your doctor before taking it.
SYNOM DX SYRUP is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women. Contact your doctor before taking it.
SYNOM DX SYRUP should be used with caution in children aged 6 to 12 years and in elderly patients. The side effects of taking SYNOM DX SYRUP are slight drowsiness, dizziness and gastrointestinal disturbances. Contact your physician if any of the symptoms worsen.

How SYNOM DX SYRUP Works
SYNOM DX SYRUP helps to manage cough, where Ammonium chloride is an expectorant works by decreasing the stickiness of airway secretions and helps in their removal from the airways. Bromhexine is a mucolytic which thins and breaks the phlegm, making it easier to cough out. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant which relieves cough by acting on the cough centre in the brain and Menthol is a demulcent and soothing agent helps to give the sensation of breathing easier and reduces cough by acting on the cold receptors present in the nose and throat. Together relives cough effectively.
How to use SYNOM DX SYRUP
Take SYNOM DX SYRUP as advised by your physician. Shake well before use. Your physician will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of SYNOM DX SYRUP
Uncommon
- slight drowsiness, dizziness
- gastrointestinal disturbances
Rare
- nausea and epigastric discomfort
Stop taking SYNOM DX SYRUP and contact your physician immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- signs or symptoms of allergic reaction such as progressive skin rash associated with blisters or mucosal lesions of the mouth, throat, nose, eyes, genitals
How To Manage Side Effects
Nausea:
Take SYNOM DX SYRUP, with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Contact your doctor if your nausea did not improve.
Dizziness:
Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operate any machines while you are feeling dizzy. Do not drink alcohol, as it can aggravate your dizziness. Contact your doctor if your dizziness did not improve.
Stomach pain:
Try to have smaller meals but take frequently. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Do not self-manage and contact your doctor if the stomach pain did not improve.
Warning & Precautions
Pregnancy
SYNOM DX SYRUP is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Contact your doctor before taking it.
Breastfeeding
SYNOM DX SYRUP is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Contact your doctor before taking it.
Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or operate machines if you feel drowsiness after taking SYNOM DX SYRUP.
Kidney
SYNOM DX SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with poor kidney function. Contact your doctor before taking it.
Liver
SYNOM DX SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with moderate to severe liver disease. Contact your doctor before taking it.
Allergy
Do not use SYNOM DX SYRUP if you are allergic to Ammonium Chloride, Bromhexine, Dextromethorphan and Menthol or to other ingredients of this medicine.
Lungs
SYNOM DX SYRUP is not recommended for use in patients who have persistent or chronic cough, as occurs with smoking, asthma or lung disease known as emphysema or have respiratory failure or are at risk of developing respiratory failure. Contact your doctor before taking it.
Others
SYNOM DX SYRUP is not recommended for use if you have:
- peptic ulcer
Before taking SYNOM DX SYRUP, inform your doctor if you:
- are bedridden
- have poor health
- suffer from blood in cough
- have cough accompanied by a high fever, rash or persistent headache
- have (or have a family history of) ever abused or been dependent on alcohol, prescription medicines or street drugs
- have malignant ciliary syndrome (a rare lung disease)
- have intolerance to sugars
Use in Paediatrics:
SYNOM DX SYRUP should be used with caution in children aged 6 to 12 years. Contact your doctor before taking it.
Use in Geriatrics:
SYNOM DX SYRUP should be used with caution in elderly patients. Contact your doctor before taking it.
Interactions
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before taking SYNOM DX SYRUP, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- medicines used to manage depression, anxiety and Parkinson’s disease (Ex. moclobemide, selegiline, fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline)
- procarbazine (used to manage Hodgkin’s lymphoma)
- pargyline (used to manage high blood pressure)
- isoniazid (used to manage tuberculosis)
- quinidine (medicines used for irregular heart beat)
- haloperidol (medicines used for psychoses and schizophrenia)
- celecoxib, parecoxib or valdecoxib (medicines used to manage pain)
- sibutramine (medicines used to manage eating disorders)
- benzodiazepines Ex. diazepam, lorazepam (medicines used to manage anxiety, sleep problems and fits)
- antibiotics such as ampicillin, linezolid, furazolidone, amoxicillin, erythromycin or oxytetracycline (medicines used for bacterial infections)
B. Drug - Food interaction:
Do not drink grapefruit or orange juice while taking SYNOM DX SYRUP, as it might increase the effect and side effects of this medicine.
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of SYNOM DX SYRUP, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdosage are excitement, mental confusion and respiratory depression at very high dose. It may also cause hyperactivity, marked visual, auditory hallucination (seeing or hearing things that are not present) and gastric irritation.
