    Introduction About SOVENTUS D SYRUP

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP is a combination of Ambroxol, Chlorpheniramine and Dextromethorphan which belongs to the group of medicines called Mucolytic, Antihistamines and Cough suppressants. It is used for temporary relief of coughs and upper respiratory symptoms, such as nasal congestion (stuffy nose), associated with allergies or common cold.

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP is not recommended for use in patients with bronchial asthma, chronic cough, severe heart diseases, urinary retention and peptic ulcer. Contact your doctor before taking it.

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with moderate to severe liver disease, kidney disease, chronic lung disorders. Contact your doctor before taking it.

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP is not recommended for use during the first trimester of pregnancy and at the end of pregnancy. It is also not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Contact your doctor before taking it.

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP is not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age. It should be used with caution in elderly patients. The most common side effects of taking SOVENTUS D SYRUP are nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness. Contact your physician if any of the symptoms worsen.

    How SOVENTUS D SYRUP Works

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP helps to manage cough and cold, where Ambroxol is a mucolytic which thins the phlegm, making it easier to cough out. Chlorpheniramine is an Antihistamine blocks the binding of histamine (responsible for allergic reactions such as sneezing, watery and itchy eyes and runny nose) to Histamine H1receptors, thus managing allergic reactions and Dextromethorphan is a Cough suppressant which relieves cough by acting on the cough centre in the brain.

    How to use SOVENTUS D SYRUP

    Take SOVENTUS D SYRUP as advised by your physician. Shake well before use. Your doctor will decide the correct dose, duration and frequency for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of SOVENTUS D SYRUP

    Common

    • nausea, vomiting, dry mouth
    • drowsiness, dizziness

    Uncommon

    • stomach pain

    Rare

    Stop taking SOVENTUS D SYRUP and contact your physician immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • severe allergic reaction such as rashes, itching, swelling of the face or mouth causing difficulty in breathing or collapse
    • rashes and lesions on the mouth, throat, nose, eyes and reproductive organs

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Dizziness Or Drowsiness

    Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operate any machines while you are feeling dizzy. Do not drink alcohol, as it can aggravate your dizziness. Contact your doctor if your dizziness did not improve.

    Dry Mouth

    Dry mouth can be managed by chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sugar-free hard candies to stimulate the flow of saliva. Sip water at regular intervals of time. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can be drying. Consult your doctor if the dry mouth gets worse.

    Nausea And Vomiting

    Take SOVENTUS D SYRUP, with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Contact your doctor if your nausea and vomiting did not improve.

    Stomach Pain

    Try to rest and relax. Eat small meals but take frequently. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Contact your doctor if the stomach pain worsens.

    Pregnancy

    Monitoring required

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP is not recommended for use during the first trimester of pregnancy and at the end of pregnancy because of possible withdrawal symptoms for new-born. Contact your doctor before taking it.

    Breastfeeding

    Contraindicated

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Contact your doctor before taking it.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Use with Caution

    Do not drive or operate machines if you feel drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision after taking SOVENTUS D SYRUP.

    Alcohol

    Consult your doctor

    Avoid alcohol consumption while taking SOVENTUS D SYRUP as it may increases risk of side effects.

    Kidney

    Use with Caution

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with impaired kidney function. Contact your doctor before taking it.

    Liver

    Use with Caution

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with moderate to severe liver disease. Contact your doctor before taking it.

    Allergy

    Contraindicated

    Do not use SOVENTUS D SYRUP if you are allergic to ambroxol, chlorpheniramine and dextromethorphan or to other ingredients of the medicine.

    Lungs

    Consult your doctor

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP is not recommended for use in patients with bronchial asthma, chronic cough as occurs with smoking, emphysema, respiratory failure, cough with excess mucus, respiratory failure or risk of developing respiratory failure.

    It should be used with caution in patients with bronchitis, bronchiectasis or chronic lung disorders (difficulty in breathing and cough that won’t go away). Contact your doctor before taking SOVENTUS D SYRUP.

    Heart Disease

    Contraindicated

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP is not recommended for use in patients with severe high blood pressure and severe coronary artery disease. Contact your doctor before taking it.

    Others

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP is not recommended for use if you:

    • have narrow-angle glaucoma (increased eye pressure)
    • have urinary retention
    • have peptic ulcer
    • are sedated, debilitated or bedbound

    Before taking SOVENTUS D SYRUP, inform your doctor if you have:

    • fits
    • diabetes mellitus
    • enlarged prostate
    • cough and accompanied by a high fever, rash or persistent headache
    • or have a family history of ever abused or been dependent on alcohol, prescription medicines or street drugs

    Use in Paediatrics:

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP is not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age. Contact your doctor before taking it.

    Use in Geriatrics:

    SOVENTUS D SYRUP should be used with caution in elderly patients aged 65 years or above. Contact your doctor before taking it.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before taking SOVENTUS D SYRUP, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors Ex. moclobemide, procarbazine, pargyline, selegiline (medicines used for depression, Parkinson’s diseases)
    • selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) Ex. fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine and sertraline (medicines used for depression, anxiety)
    • furazolidone (used to manage infectious diarrhea)
    • isoniazid (medicine used for tuberculosis)
    • linezolid (medicines used for bacterial infections)
    • benzodiazepines (medicines used for anxiety, fits, panic disorders) Ex. diazepam, alprazolam
    • antipsychotics Ex. haloperidol (medicines used for psychiatric disorders, emotional conditions)
    • quinidine, amiodarone, (medicines used for irregular heart beat)
    • celecoxib, parecoxib or valdecoxib (medicines used to manage pain and inflammation)
    • sibutramine (used for eating disorders)
    • morphine (used to manage severe pain)
    • sedative H1-antihistaminics Ex. clemastine (medicine used for allergies)
    • phenobarbital, phenytoin (medicines used for fits)
    • clonidine (used to manage high blood pressure)

    B. Drug - Food interaction:

    Avoid drinking grapefruit or orange juice while taking SOVENTUS D SYRUP as it may lead to unwanted effects.

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of SOVENTUS D SYRUP, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdosage are nausea, vomiting, involuntary muscle contractions, agitation, confusion, somnolence, change in consciousness, involuntary and rapid eye movements, rapid heart beating, abnormal ECG including QTc prolongation, coordination disorders, psychosis with visual hallucination (seeing things which are not present) and hyperexcitability. In case of massive overdose symptoms include coma, severe breathing problems and fits.

    A: If you forget to take a dose of SOVENTUS D SYRUP, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the right time. Do not take the medicine twice to make up for the forgotten dose.

    Q: Does SOVENTUS D SYRUP cause dependence?

    A: SOVENTUS D SYRUP can lead to dependence. Therefore the management should be of short duration. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days.
