Introduction About SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY contains Diazepam which belongs to the group of medicines called Benzodiazepines. SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is used to manage severe anxiety and agitation, muscle spasms, epilepsy or febrile convulsions (fits due to a high fever), symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY also used to provide sedation before operations (premedication).
Epilepsy is a condition affecting brain which causes burst of electrical activity in brain which temporarily affects working of brain. Symptoms of epilepsy are uncontrollable jerking and shaking, loss of awareness, collapsing, becoming stiff, unusual feelings such as rising feeling in stomach, unusual smells, tastes, tingling in arms and legs.
Avoid alcohol, grapefruit juice, caffeinated drinks while using SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY as it may lead to unwanted effects.
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is not recommended for use in patients suffering from acute respiratory depression, phobia, depression (with or without anxiety) or hyperactivity, myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness), severe liver disease, sleep apnoea (severe breathing difficulty during sleep), porphyria, acute narrow angle glaucoma. Consult your doctor before using.
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY should be used with caution in patients suffering from alcoholism and recreational drug abuse, severe kidney problems, personality disorders, self-harming thoughts, open angle glaucoma, depression, respiratory problems such as asthma, pneumonia, neurologic damage and fits. Consult your doctor before using.
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before using. SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is not recommended for use in breast feeding women as it may pass through breast milk. Consult your doctor before using.
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is not recommended for use in children below 6 months of age as its safety is not established. Consult your doctor before using.
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY should be used with caution in elderly patients above 60 years of age as it may cause confusion and have effects on muscles causing falls and injuries. Consult your doctor before using.
The most common side effects of using SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY are drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, sedation, balance disorders, loss of coordination of muscle movements (ataxia), tremor, confusion and impaired motor ability. Consult your doctor in case any of the side effects worsens.

It is used to manage:

How SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY Works
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY belongs to benzodiazepines which works by binding to specific receptors in brain and enhancing the activity of an inhibitory neurotransmitter (a chemical in brain called GABA) which in result suppress the abnormal and excessive activity of neurons in brain.
How to use SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY
Always use SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY as advised by your physician. SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is for rectal use only. Remove the wrapper from the suppository before inserting it. Keep lying down for about 15 minutes after insertion so that the medicine does not come out before it melts. Your doctor will decide the exact dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY
Common
- drowsiness, fatigue
- dizziness, sedation
- balance disorders, loss of muscle coordination (ataxia), tremor

Uncommon
- muscles weakness
- memory loss
- difficulty in concentration

Rare
- behavioural changes (most seen in children and elderly patients) such as excitation, agitation, restlessness, irritability, aggressiveness, memory loss, inappropriate behaviour, delusion, rages, psychoses, nightmares or hallucinations
- depression
- difficulty sleeping
- low blood pressure, fainting
- dry mouth, increase in appetite
- gynecomastia (breast enlargement in males)
- impotence, changes in sexual drive
- loss of bladder control, lack of ability to urinate
- heart problems
- increased mucus secretion in lungs
- changes in liver enzymes
- blood disorders which may lead to infections, nose bleeds, sore throat
- emotional withdrawal
- decreased alertness
- difficulty speaking
- sustained involuntary or intermittent spasmodic contractions of muscles of face, neck, trunk, pelvis, extremities, larynx
Stop using SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY and consult your doctor immediately in case you experience:
- itchy skin, rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat causing difficulty breathing or swallowing
- respiratory arrest (cessation of breathing)
- jaundice (yellowish discolouration of skin and whites of eyes)
How To Manage Side Effects
Diarrhoea:
Drink plenty of water or fruit juices to keep you hydrated. Do not take any medicine on your own for managing diarrhoea however contact your doctor if diarrhoea worsen.
Headache:
Rest and relax. Drink plenty of water and electrolytes. Apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if needed. Do not consume alcohol and contact your doctor if your headache did not improve.
Dizziness:
Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operate machinery if you feel dizziness. Avoid alcohol consumption as it aggravates dizziness and contact your doctor if dizziness worsen.
Nausea or Vomiting:
Use the medicine, with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food however, contact your doctor if nausea and vomiting worsen.
Constipation:
Eat plenty of fibre rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals. Drink water and exercise regularly and contact your doctor if constipation persists.

Pregnancy
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before using.
Breastfeeding
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is not recommended for use in breast feeding women as SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY may pass through breast milk. Consult your doctor before using.
Driving and Using Machines
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY causes sleepiness, forgetfulness, poor coordination, dizziness which can affect your driving ability. Do not drive or operate machines after using SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY.
Alcohol
Do not consume alcohol while using SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY as it increases the sedative effect of SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY and makes you very sleepy.
Kidney
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney failure. Consult your doctor before using.
Liver
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is not recommended for use in patients suffering from severe liver disease. Consult your doctor before using.
Allergy
Do not use SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY if you are allergic to Diazepam or to other benzodiazepines or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Lungs
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is not recommended for use in patients with acute respiratory depression (slow and /or shallow breathing). It should be used with caution in patients suffering from respiratory diseases such as asthma, pneumonia. Consult your doctor using.
Others
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is not recommended for use if you have:
- a phobia (a fear of a particular object or situation) or other mental illness
- depression (with or without anxiety) or hyperactivity
- myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness)
- porphyria (a rare blood disorder)
- acute narrow angle glaucoma
- sleep apnoea
Before using SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY inform your doctor if you have:
- personality disorder
- self-harming thoughts
- open angle glaucoma
- seizures or convulsions
- neurologic damage
Use in pediatrics:
SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY is not recommended for use in children below 6 months of age as its safety and efficacy is not yet established. Consult your doctor before using.
Use in geriatrics:

Before using SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- sodium oxybate (medicine used for management of narcolepsy)
- fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine, amitriptyline (medicines used for management of depression)
- antipsychotics such as clozapine, fluphenazine (medicines used for management of mental disorders)
- antihistamines such as cetirizine, chlorpheniramine, terfenadine (medicine used for management of allergies)
- general anaesthetics such as halothane, isoflurane (medicines used during surgeries)
- sedatives such as alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide (medicine used for management of anxiety)
- zolpidem, zopiclone (medicine used for management of sleep disorders)
- troleandomycin (medicine used for management of bacterial infections)
- suxamethonium, tubocurarine (medicine used for muscle relaxation)
- morphine (medicine used as strong painkillers)
- valproic acid and barbiturates such as phenobarbital (medicine used for management of epilepsy and mental disorders)
- furosemide, chlorothiazide and hydralazine, sodium nitro prusside (medicines used for management of high blood pressure)

B. Drug food interaction:
Avoid consuming grapefruit juice as it may increase SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY levels in blood. Do not consuming caffeinated drinks while using SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY as it may reduce the effect of SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY.
Overdosage:
In case you or anybody else accidentally uses too much of SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY consult the doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose of SLIPIZEM 5MG SUPPOSITORY are loss of coordination of muscle movements, sleep-like drowsy state, confusion, lethargy, slurred speech, irregular or slow heartbeat, uncontrolled eye movement and muscle weakness.
