Introduction About SALMETEROL CAPSULE
SALMETEROL CAPSULE contains Salmeterol which belongs to the group of medicines called Bronchodilators. It indicated for the management of asthma including nocturnal asthma and exercise-induced asthma along with inhaled corticosteroid.
It is also indicated for the long-term, maintenance management of bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
SALMETEROL CAPSULE is not recommended for use if you have acutely deteriorating asthma. It should be used with caution if you have thyrotoxicosis (increased thyroid hormone), diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disorders (coronary insufficiency, cardiac arrhythmias and hypertension), epilepsy or liver disease.
Safety data of SALMETEROL CAPSULE in pregnant and breastfeeding women has not been established yet. It is not recommended for use in children below 4 years of age. The most common side effects of using SALMETEROL CAPSULE are headache, flu symptoms, joint or muscle pain, throat irritation, cough, stuffy or runny nose. Consult your doctor if symptoms do not improve.
Uses Of SALMETEROL CAPSULE
- Management of asthma including nocturnal asthma and exercise-induced asthma as concomitant therapy with inhaled corticosteroid
- Maintenance management of bronchospasm associated with COPD including emphysema and chronic bronchitis
How SALMETEROL CAPSULE Works
SALMETEROL CAPSULE helps in relaxing the smooth muscles of the air passages by widening it (bronchodilation), thus improving airflow and making it easier to breathe. It also inhibits mast cell mediators which decreases inflammation.
How to use SALMETEROL CAPSULE
Always use SALMETEROL CAPSULE as prescribed by your doctor. It is for inhalation use only. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you based upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of SALMETEROL CAPSULE
Common
- flu symptoms
- joint or muscle pain
- throat irritation, cough
- stuffy or runny nose
- headache
Rare
Stop using SALMETEROL CAPSULE and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- worsening asthma symptoms or other breathing problems
- severe headache, blurred vision, pounding in your neck or ears
- chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeats, tremors, nervousness
- high blood sugar - increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, fruity breath odour
- low potassium level (leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, increased thirst or urination, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness or limp feeling)
- hypersensitivity reactions, rash (itching and redness) anaphylactic reactions including oedema and angioedema, bronchospasm and anaphylactic shock
- paradoxical bronchospasm (immediate increase in wheezing and fall in peak expiratory flow rate)
- symptoms of laryngeal spasm, irritation or swelling, such as stridor and choking
How To Manage Side Effects
Headache:
Avoid using mobile phones and other electronic devices till the pain settles down, rest in a quiet dark place. Consult your doctor if symptoms do not improve.
Cough:
Avoid oily and spicy food. Drink lots of water. Take steam, cough drops or lozenges for soothing effect. Consult your doctor if symptoms do not improve.

Pregnancy
Safety data of SALMETEROL CAPSULE in pregnant women or women planning to have a baby has not been established yet so it should be given only if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than any possible risk to the foetus. Consult your doctor before using.
Breastfeeding
Safety data of SALMETEROL CAPSULE in breastfeeding has not been established yet so it should be given only after accessing the risk and benefit to the mother and baby. Consult your doctor before using.
Liver
SALMETEROL CAPSULE should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Consult your doctor before using this medicine.
Allergy
Do not use SALMETEROL CAPSULE if you are allergic to Salmeterol or any other ingredients of this medicine.
Lungs
SALMETEROL CAPSULE is not recommended for patients with acutely deteriorating asthma. Consult your doctor before using this medicine.
Heart Disease
SALMETEROL CAPSULE should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders (coronary insufficiency, cardiac arrhythmias and hypertension). Consult your doctor before using this medicine.
Others
Before using SALMETEROL CAPSULE inform your doctor if you:
- have epilepsy
- have thyrotoxicosis (increased thyroid hormone)
- have diabetes mellitus

Interactions
A. Drug - Drug interactions:
Before using SALMETEROL CAPSULE inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- ketoconazole, itraconazole (used for fungal infections)
- ritonavir, atazanavir, indinavir (used in the management of viral infections)
- nelfinavir, saquinavir (used in the management of viral infections)
- telithromycin, clarithromycin (to manage bacterial infections)
- other medicines to manage asthma (Ex. aminophylline, theophylline)
- beta-blockers (Ex. atenolol, carvedilol, labetalol, metoprolol, propranolol, sotalol, timolol) to manage heart conditions
- diuretics (Ex. thiazide, chlorthalidone) to remove excess fluid from body
- MAO inhibitor (Ex. isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine) and nefazodone to manage depression
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally use too much of SALMETEROL CAPSULE, consult your doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdose include tremor, headache, tachycardia, dizziness, increase in systolic blood pressure and hypokalaemia (low potassium levels).
