Introduction About RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES
RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES contains Paracetamol which belongs to the group of medicines called Analgesics and Antipyretics. It is used to manage pain and fever (high temperature) in adults and children (over 10 years of age) who find it difficult to take medicine orally.
Before using RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES, inform your doctor if you or your child have liver or kidney problems or any allergies. RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES should be used with caution in patients with chronic alcoholism to manage the risk of liver damage.
RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if clearly advised by the doctor. RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES is not recommended for use in children (under 10 years of age).
The most common side effect of using RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES is redness or soreness in and around the back passage. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects get worse.

How RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES Works
RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES relieves pain by increasing the pain threshold by inhibiting certain enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) involved in the synthesis of chemicals responsible for inducing pain (prostaglandins). It reduces fever by directly acting on heat-regulating centers in the brain, resulting in vessel relaxation, sweating and loss of body heat.
How to use RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES
Use RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES as advised by your physician. It is for rectal use only. Your bowels need to be empty when you use them. Wash your hands and peel the wrapping apart. Do not break the medicine before use. Smoothly push it into your back passage with the pointed end first. Slightly warm it between your hands beforehand to make it easier. Try to keep still for a minute or two and then clean your hands.
Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you based on your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES
Common
- redness or soreness in and around the back passage
Rare
- blood problems (bruising or bleeding more easily than usual, more susceptibility to infections, fever, ulcers in the mouth and throat)
- liver problems (yellow skin or whites of the eyes)
Stop using RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- allergic reaction (signs include rash, trouble swallowing or breathing, swelling of the lips, face, throat or tongue)

Breastfeeding
RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES should be used in breastfeeding women only if considered necessary. Consult your doctor before using it.
Alcohol
RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES should be used with caution in patients with chronic alcoholism. Consult your doctor before using it.
Kidney
RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor before using it.
Liver
RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before using it.
Allergy
Do not use RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES if you are allergic to Paracetamol, soya, peanuts or any other ingredients of this medicine.
Others
Before using RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES, inform your doctor if you:
- have sepsis (circulation of bacteria and their toxins in the blood leading to organ damage)
- are malnourished

It should be used with caution in children over 10 years of age and your child’s doctor may adjust the dose based on the child’s age and body weight. Interactions
A. Drug - Drug interactions:
Before using RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- other medicines containing paracetamol
- medicines used to manage nausea and vomiting (Ex. metoclopramide, domperidone)
- cholestyramine (used to control blood fat levels)
- medicines used to manage fits (Ex. carbamazepine, phenytoin)
- warfarin (used for managing blood clots)
- medicines used to manage bacterial infections (Ex. rifampicin, flucloxacillin)
Overdosage:
If you or your child or anyone else accidentally used too much or ingested RECTOL 500MG SUPPOSITORIES, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital, even if you feel well, as it can cause delayed serious liver damage.
