    Introduction About NOCOHOL TABLET

    NOCOHOL TABLET contains Disulfiram which belongs to the group of medicines called Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Inhibitors. It is used to manage in patients with alcohol dependence (or alcohol addiction). It helps to manage the habit of alcoholism in patients having a habit of drinking excessive alcohol (chronic alcoholism). NOCOHOL TABLET helps in reducing alcohol dependence. It creates aversion towards alcohol by creating various unpleasant symptoms (such as flushing, burning sensation, throbbing headache, increased sweating, chest tightness, dizziness, vomiting, visual disturbances and confusion).

    Before taking NOCOHOL TABLET inform your doctor if you have any lung, liver, kidney or heart problems. You must also inform your doctor if you have diabetes, high or low blood pressure, thyroid problems, brain damage, fits or any mental disorders as a precaution. NOCOHOL TABLET should not be used in patients who have already consumed alcohol. It should be used only in patients who have not drunk alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to the first dose.

    It is also not suitable for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women and in children (aged below 18 years). The most common side effects of taking NOCOHOL TABLET are drowsiness, tiredness, impotence, low sex drive, headache, sleepiness and metallic taste.     How NOCOHOL TABLET Works

    NOCOHOL TABLET helps in reducing alcohol dependence. It acts by blocking the actions of certain enzymes (such as aldehyde dehydrogenase) within the body that helps in breaking down a substance called acetaldehyde. As a result, it leads to the accumulation of an excessive amount of acetaldehyde in the body causing unpleasant physical reactions (such as flushing, burning sensation, throbbing headache, increased sweating, chest tightness, dizziness, vomiting, visual disturbances and confusion) that can create aversion towards alcohol which will eventually help in quitting alcoholism.

    How to use NOCOHOL TABLET

    Take NOCOHOL TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Do not consume alcohol for at least 24 hours before taking the first dose of NOCOHOL TABLET. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Dizziness Or Drowsiness

    Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating heavy tools or machinery while you feel drowsy. Avoid the consumption of alcohol as it could aggravate your drowsiness. Contact your doctor if the condition worsens.

    Headache

    Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

    Nausea And Vomiting

    Try to take NOCOHOL TABLET with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals and avoid oily-rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if the nausea worsens.

    NOCOHOL TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

    • have consumed an excessive amounts of alcohol (alcohol intoxication)
    • have high blood pressure
    • have a severe mental disorder or any personality disorder
    • had stroke recently

    Before taking NOCOHOL TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

    • have diabetes
    • have low blood pressure
    • have epilepsy
    • have any form of damage in the brain
    • have hypothyroidism (low thyroid functions)

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before taking NOCOHOL TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:

    • warfarin (a medicine used to reduce blood clotting)
    • medicines used to manage epilepsy (ex. phenytoin and paraldehyde)
    • theophylline (a medicine used to manage asthma)
    • medicines used to reduce anxiety (such as chlordiazepoxide and diazepam)
    • opioid analgesics (used for pain relief) such as pethidine and morphine
    • medicines used to stimulate the brain (such as amphetamine, dextroamphetamine)
    • medicines used for mental illness (such as pimozide and chlorpromazine)
    • medicines used to manage tuberculosis (ex. isoniazid, rifampicin)
    • metronidazole (a medicine used for parasite infection)
    • amitriptyline (a medicine used to manage depression)
    • alcohol-containing medicines (such as cough syrups)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally took more of NOCOHOL TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose might include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea, headache, drowsiness, fatigue, mental disorders, tiredness, rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, high body temperature, low blood pressure, loss of muscle control and/or high blood sugar.
