    Introduction About NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION contains Ampicillin which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to manage bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, respiratory tract (bronchus, lungs), urinary tract, genital tract, stomach, blood, brain and skin or soft tissues.

    It can also be used to manage typhoid fever, meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain), peritonitis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach) and endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart and its valves).

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION should be used under medical supervision. Do not stop receiving NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION even if you feel better during the midway of the therapy. Failing to complete the full course of the therapy or skipping doses in between the therapy may not result in adequate infection control.

    During therapy with NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION, your doctor will periodically monitor your health condition through several blood tests/urine tests to access the improvement in your condition and to reduce the risk of unwanted side effects. NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION is suitable for use in adults and in children (aged 10 years or older; weighing 20 kg or more).

    Before receiving NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION inform your doctor if you have any kidney problems. You must also inform your doctor if you have blood cancer or any viral infections (such as cytomegalovirus infection) as a precaution.

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION should be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women only if considered necessary by the physician. The most common side effects of receiving NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Inform your doctor if they trouble you.

    Uses Of NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION

    It is used to manage various bacterial infections such as:

    • Ear infections (Ex. otitis media)
    • Nose or throat infections
    • Respiratory tract infections (Ex. bronchitis and pneumonia)
    • Urinary tract infections (Ex. cystitis and kidney infections)
    • Genital tract infections (Ex. gonorrhoea)
    • Stomach infections (Ex. peritonitis)
    • Blood infections (Ex. sepsis)
    • Skin or soft tissue infections (Ex. acne)
    • Meningitis (inflammation of the protective layer surrounding the brain)
    • Endocarditis (inflammation of the protective layer surrounding the heart)
    • Typhoid fever

    How NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION Works

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION is a bactericidal agent. It kills the susceptible bacteria by blocking the bacterial cell wall synthesis that is essential for the bacterial cell to survive. This action destroys the susceptible bacteria, manage their further growth and multiplication and reduce the severity of the infection.

    How to use NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into the vein (intravenously) or into the muscles (intramuscularly).

    Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and severity of the infection.

    Do not miss a dose or stop receiving NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION without consulting your doctor as it may worsen your condition.

    Side Effects Of NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION

    Common

    • diarrhoea
    • nausea, vomiting

    Rare

    Stop receiving NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • signs of severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
    • stomach pain with uncontrollable watery diarrhoea, feeling weak and fever
    • severe skin reactions (such as widespread skin rash with blistering and peeling of skin around the mouth, face and genitals)
    • signs of liver problems (such as yellowing of skin and whites of the eye, pale faeces, dark urine, persistent nausea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness)
    • unusual bleeding or bruising
    • fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, repeated infections
    • signs of kidney problems (such as passing low urine, passing urine at night, tiredness, breathlessness, pale skin, fever, skin rash, nausea, pains)

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Nausea or vomiting:

    Take NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Please consult your doctor immediately if you experience severe nausea and vomiting.

    Diarrhoea:

    Drink plenty of fluids, such as water or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Consuming ORS can also be beneficial. Do not consume any medicine on your own without consulting your doctor. If your diarrhea worsens, contact your doctor immediately.

    Warning & Precautions

    Pregnancy

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in pregnant women. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

    Breastfeeding

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

    Driving and Using Machines

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or operate any heavy tools or machines.

    Kidney

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

    Allergy

    Do not receive NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION if you are allergic to Ampicillin, or to any other beta lactam antibiotics (such as amoxicillin) or cephalosporin antibiotics (such as cefixime).

    Others

    Before receiving NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION, inform your doctor if you:

    • have glandular fever
    • have lymphatic leukaemia (cancer or blood or bone marrow)
    • have cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection

    Use in pediatrics:

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION can be used in children and adolescents (aged 10 years or older; weighing 20 kg or more) if prescribed by the physician. However, consult your doctor for advice.

    Use in geriatrics:

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in the elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before receiving it.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before receiving NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • oral contraceptives (birth control pills) Ex. drospirenone, ethinyl Estradiol
    • allopurinol, sulfinpyrazone or probenecid (medicines used to manage gout)
    • other antibiotics (used to manage bacterial infections) such as tetracycline, erythromycin, and chloramphenicol
    • anticoagulants such as warfarin or phenindione

    Overdosage:

    NEOCILLIN 1GM INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. Symptoms of overdosage might include gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
