    Introduction About MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY

    MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY contains Desmopressin which belongs to the group of medicines called Synthetic antidiuretic peptide. It is a synthetic analogue called 8-arginine vasopressin (ADH), an antidiuretic hormone affecting renal water conservation. It is used for central or neurogenic diabetes insipidus, bleeding disorders nocturnal enuresis.

    Desmopressin works by reducing the amount of water eliminated in the urine by the kidneys. It enhances the reabsorption of water in the kidneys. Avoid drinking large amounts of water or fluid while you are using this medicine. This could lead to a build-up of water which dilutes the salt in the body and may cause a serious problems or convulsions.

    Before using this medicine, consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, because, blood pressure monitoring is recommended due to the increased risk of pre-eclampsia. MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor for advice. Do not use this medicine if you have any blood disorders or if you are aged 65 years of age. Consult your doctor before using. The most common side effects of using this medicine are headache, stomach pain and swelling of ankles.

    Uses Of MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY

    It is used for:

    • central or neurogenic diabetes insipidus
    • bleeding disorders nocturnal enuresis

    How MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY Works

    MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY mimics the action of endogenous anti-diuretic hormone. After intranasal administration, its acts as a selective agonist of V2 receptors present in the renal distal tubule and collecting ducts. Binding of desmopressin to V2 receptors, stimulates the production of adenylyl cyclase, which leads to increased reabsorption of water and reduced urine production.

    How to use MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY

    Always use this medicine as directed by your physician. It for intranasal use only. Remove the protective cap and prime the spray by pressing several times. Tilt your head backwards and insert the tip of the nozzle into your nostril. Spray into the nostril while breathing in slightly. If required, spray into other nostril in the same way. Wipe your nozzle with a clean tissue and replace the protective cap.

    Your doctor will decide the correct dose for you depending upon your condition. Continue to take this medicine, as long as your doctor tells you to do so, to obtain better results.

    Side Effects Of MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY

    Common

    • headache
    • stomach pain
    • blocked or runny nose, nose bleeds

    Rare

    • cerebral edema (water on the brain)

    Stop using and consult your doctor immediately, if you experience the following:

    • confusion
    • convulsion 
    • unexplained weight gain
    • ankle swelling
    • nausea or vomiting
    • signs of allergic reaction (such as itching, skin rashes, swelling of face, lips or throat, difficulty in breathing, chest tightness or coughing)

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Headache

    Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Do not drink too much alcohol. Ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.

    Stomach Pain

    Try to rest and relax. You can eat and drink slowly or have smaller and frequent meals. Keeping a heat pad on your stomach may also help. If still pain persists, consult your doctor.

    Allergy

    Contraindicated

    Do not use this medicine if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Desmopressin or any other ingredients of this medicine.

    Heart Disease

    Use with Caution

    MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY should be used with caution in patients with heart disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

    Use In Geriatrics

    Contraindicated

    Do not use MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY if you are older than 65 years of age. Consult your doctor before using the medicine.

    Others

    MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY is not recommended if you have:

    • primary polydipsia (compulsive water drinking) or excessive thirst due to alcohol abuse
    • hyponatremia (low levels of sodium in your blood)
    • syndrome of inappropriate secretion of diuretic hormone, polyuria (producing too much urine)
    • Type IIb von Willebrand’s disease (a blood disorder) or thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (blood disorder)

    Before MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY, consult your doctor if you:

    • are dehydrated due to vomiting
    • have diarrhea or systemic infection or cystic fibrosis

    A. Drug-Drug Interactions:

    Before using MINIRIN NASAL SPRAY inform your doctor if you are taking the following,

    • medicines used for high blood pressure (e.g. captopril, propranolol, enalapril, losartan, valsartan)
    • medicines used to manage depression (e.g. lithium, amitriptyline, imipramine, paroxetine, fluoxetine, sertraline)
    • clofibrate (used to manage high cholesterol levels)
    • chlorpromazine (used for schizophrenia)
    • carbamazepine (used to manage epilepsy)
    • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (used to relieve pains and inflammatory conditions)
    • glibenclamide (used to manage diabetes)
