    Introduction About METROGYL M OINTMENT

    METROGYL M OINTMENT is a combination of Mupirocin and Metronidazole which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to manage bacterial skin infections such as impetigo (usually appears as reddish sores on the face, around nose, mouth, hands and feet), rosacea (blushing or flushing and visible blood vessels in face which may also produce small, pus-filled bumps).

    Bacterial skin infections develop when bacteria enter through hair follicles, small breaks in the skin that result from scrapes, punctures, surgery, burns, sunburn, animal or insect bites, wounds and pre-existing skin disorders.

    Before using METROGYL M OINTMENT inform your doctor if you have kidney, liver, nervous system problems, bleeding disorder, open wounds or damaged skin.

    Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before applying METROGYL M OINTMENT. METROGYL M OINTMENT should be used with caution in children and elderly patients.

    The most common side effects of applying METROGYL M OINTMENT are burning sensation, itching, redness, irritation at the application site. Consult your doctor if the above side effects does not improve.

    How METROGYL M OINTMENT Works

    METROGYL M OINTMENT works against the bacteria and promoting faster healing of the infection in which mupirocin exerts its action by reversibly binding to an enzyme (isoleucyl transfer RNA synthetase) and inhibits its activity of synthesis of proteins in the bacteria and produce microbicidal action. Metronidazole destroys the bacteria and other microorganisms that cause infections by damaging the DNA.

    How to use METROGYL M OINTMENT

    Apply METROGYL M OINTMENT as advised by your physician. It is for external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected areas of the skin with clean and dry hands. Avoid contact with eyes. Your doctor will decide the right dose and duration depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of METROGYL M OINTMENT

    Common

    • burning, irritation, itching and redness (application site reactions)

    Uncommon

    • allergic rash, redness or soreness of the skin on the face, hands or body

    Rare

    Stop applying METROGYL M OINTMENT and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • severe allergic reaction which may include a red and lumpy skin rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of face, mouth, lips or eyelids, unexplained high temperature (fever), difficulty breathing and swallowing and feeling faint
    • inflammation of the colon (larger intestine), causing diarrhea, usually with blood and mucus, stomach pain, fever (pseudomembranous colitis)

    Pregnancy

    Safety and effectiveness of METROGYL M OINTMENT in pregnant women has not been established yet. Hence it should be used with caution in pregnant women or if planning to have a baby. Consult your doctor before applying it.

    Breastfeeding

    METROGYL M OINTMENT should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before applying it.

    Driving and Using Machines

    METROGYL M OINTMENT is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines. Consult your doctor for advice.

    Kidney

    METROGYL M OINTMENT should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor before applying.

    Liver

    METROGYL M OINTMENT should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before applying.

    Allergy

    Do not apply METROGYL M OINTMENT if you are allergic to Mupirocin, Metronidazole or any other ingredients of this medicine.

    Others

    METROGYL M OINTMENT is not recommended for use if you:

    • have bleeding disorders
    • central nervous system disorder

    Before applying METROGYL M OINTMENT, inform your doctor if you:

    • have open wounds or damaged skin

    Use in Pediatrics:

    METROGYL M OINTMENT should be used with caution in children above 2 months of age. Consult your doctor before applying.

    Use in Geriatrics:

    METROGYL M OINTMENT should be used with caution in elderly patients above 65 years of age as they are more sensitive to the side effects. Consult your doctor before applying the medicine.

    Interactions

    A. Drug - Drug interactions:

    Before applying METROGYL M OINTMENT, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • medicines used to manage alcoholism (Ex. disulfiram)
    • medicines used to manage HIV/AIDS infection (Ex. lopinavir, ritonavir)
    • antidepressants (Ex. lithium)
    • blood thinner (Ex. warfarin)
    • fits medicine (Ex. phenytoin, phenobarbital)
    • immunosuppressants (Ex. ciclosporin)
    • anticancer medicines (Ex. fluorouracil, busulfan)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally applies too much of METROGYL M OINTMENT, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are severe allergic skin reactions.
