Introduction About METINEX SR
METINEX SR contains Metformin which belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-diabetic agents. It is used to manage type II diabetes mellitus when diet and exercise alone does not result in adequate blood sugar control.
Type II diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by abnormally high levels of glucose in the blood. It is caused due to inadequate production of a hormone called insulin (produced by pancreas to metabolize glucose) in the body or due to inadequate sensitivity of body cells to the actions of insulin.
METINEX SR works by making your body utilize more amount of circulating blood glucose. It is suitable for use both in adults and in children (aged 10 years or older).
Along with the therapy, your doctor might ask you to make certain lifestyle changes such as following a healthy diet, regular physical exercise and quitting alcohol consumption.
Before taking METINEX SR inform your doctor if you have any liver, kidney or heart problems. You must also inform your doctor if you have any severe systemic infections or are severely dehydrated due to excessive vomiting or diarrhea recently.
METINEX SR is not recommended for use in patients with severe uncontrollable diabetes. It is also not suitable for use in patients with shock or problems with breathing or blood circulation.
Consult your doctor before taking METINEX SR if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The most common side effects of taking METINEX SR are nausea, stomach upset and diarrhea. These side effects can be controlled when METINEX SR is taken along with meals. However, if these side effect bothers you or worsens contact your doctor.

METINEX SR is an antidiabetic medicine. It makes the body more sensitive to insulin (a hormone involved in glucose metabolism). This helps our body cells to utilize more amount of the circulating blood glucose, thereby reducing blood sugar levels. Additionally, it also manages glucose production by the liver and reduces its absoprtion in the body.
How to use METINEX SR
Take METINEX SR preferably after meals or as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.
Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition. Do not stop taking METINEX SR unless your doctor advice you to stop.
Side Effects Of METINEX SR
Serious
Stop taking METINEX SR and consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- serious allergic reaction (such as hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
- signs of liver problems (such as nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, unusual or unexplained tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes)
- signs of lactic acidosis (cold hands or feet, dizziness or light-headedness, slow or irregular heartbeat, weakness or tiredness, unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, sleepiness or drowsiness, stomach pains, nausea or vomiting)

- changes in taste, metallic taste
How To Manage Side Effects
Diarrhea
Hydrate yourself by drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or fruit juices. Consuming ORS can also be beneficial. Do not self-manage diarrhea on your own. Consult your doctor if your diarrhea becomes uncontrollable.
Nausea And Vomiting
Take METINEX SR with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.

Monitoring requiredMETINEX SR should be used during pregnancy only if it is considered necessary by the physician. Therefore, inform your doctor before taking METINEX SR if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or planning to have a baby.
Breastfeeding
ContraindicatedMETINEX SR is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. However, consult your doctor before taking it.
Driving and Using Machines
Use with CautionDo not drive or operate any heavy tools or machines if your ability is affected by METINEX SR.
Alcohol
Consult your doctorAvoid consumption of alcohol while taking METINEX SR as it may increase the risk of unwanted side effects.
Kidney
ContraindicatedMETINEX SR is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney problems (including kidney infections). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
Liver

Allergy

Lungs

Heart Disease
ContraindicatedMETINEX SR is not recommended for use in patients with heart problems (such as acute heart failure or a recent heart attack). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
Use In Pediatrics
Consult your doctorMETINEX SR should be used in children and adolescents (aged 10 years or older) only if prescribed by the physician. It is not recommended for use in children (aged below 10 years). However, consult your doctor before taking it.
Use In Geriatrics
Use with CautionMETINEX SR should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
Others
METINEX SR is not recommended for use if you:
- have severe, uncontrollable diabetes
- have lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis (buildup of lactic acid or ketones in the body)
- are dehydrated (due to severe vomiting or diarrhea during recent days)
- have any systemic infection which is severe
- have shock or problems in blood circulation
- have problems in breathing
- are an alcoholic
Before taking METINEX SR, inform your doctor if you:
- are about to have any X-ray or scan
- are about a have a major surgery
- are in fasting
Interactions
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before taking METINEX SR, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:
- other medicines used to manage diabetes (Ex. teneligliptin, rosiglitazone, pioglitazone, glimepiride)
- diuretics (used to reduce edema and to manage hypertension) Ex. furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide
- medicines used to manage pain and inflammation (such as ibuprofen and celecoxib)
- medicines used to manage high blood pressure (such as atenolol, propranolol, captopril, enalapril, ramipril, lisinopril, losartan, valsartan, olmesartan, telmisartan)
- medicines used to manage asthma (Ex. salbutamol or terbutaline)
- corticosteroids (used to manage pain and inflammation) Ex. hydrocortisone, prednisolone
- verapamil (a medicine used to manage heart problems)
- rifampicin (a medicine used to manage tuberculosis)
- cimetidine (a medicine used to manage stomach ulcer)
- dolutegravir (a medicine used to manage HIV infection)
- ranolazine (a medicine used to manage chest pain)
- trimethoprim (a medicine used to manage bacterial infection)
- vandetanib, crizotinib and olaparib (medicines used to manage cancer)
- isavuconazole (a medicine used to manage fungal infection)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take more METINEX SR, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are vomiting, stomach pain with muscle cramps, feeling generally unwell with severe tiredness and difficulty in breathing.
