Introduction About MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION
MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION is used in the management of wet form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It contains Pegaptanib which belongs to the group of medicines called Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antagonist. MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION works by blocking a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that works against the growth and leakage of abnormal blood vessels in the eyes that may cause vision loss.
If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby. Consult your doctor for advice before receiving this medicine. It is not known whether MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION is excreted in human milk. MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION is not recommended during breast-feeding. Consult your doctor for advice before receiving the medicine. It is only for ophthalmic usage only.
MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION is not recommended for use if you have eye infection in or around the eye. The most common side effects of MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION are eye inflammation, eye pain, ocular hypertension (increased pressure inside the eye), punctate keratitis (small marks on the eye surface), vitreous floaters or opacities (small particles or spots in vision), blurred vision or visual disturbance. Consult your doctor if any of the above side effects worsens or persists for a longer duration.

How MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION Works
MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION works by blocking a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that works against the growth and leakage of abnormal blood vessels in the eyes that may cause vision loss.
How to use MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION
MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION will be given into the vitreous of the eye only by a doctor or nurse. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight, and disease condition.
Side Effects Of MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION
Common
- eye inflammation
- eye pain
- increased pressure inside the eye
- small marks on the eye surface (punctate keratitis)
- small particles or spots in your vision (vitreous floaters or opacities)
- blurred vision
- visual disturbance
- eye discomfort
- decreased vision
- increased sensitivity to light
- appearance of flashing lights
- bleeding that occurs around the eye (periorbital bleeding)
- bloodshot eye (conjunctival haemorrhage)
- disorder of the jelly portion inside the eye (vitreous disorder) such as displacement or tear (vitreous detachment)
- clouding of the lens
- disorder of the surface of the eye
- swelling or inflammation of the eyelid
- swelling of the area on the inside of the eyelid or the outer surface of the eye (conjunctiva)
- eye inflammation
- tears
- inflammation of the conjunctiva (conjunctivitis)
- dryness
- eye discharge or irritation
- eye itching
- eye redness or enlargement of the pupil
- headache
- nasal discharge
Uncommon
- disturbance in eye’s reaction to the light (pupillary reflex impaired)
- small erosion on the central part of the surface of the eye (cornea)
- drooping eyelid
- scar inside the eye
- small lump on your eyelid due to inflammation (chalazion)
- injection site reaction, injection site vesicles
- retinal artery occlusion
- eye movement disorder
- eyelid irritation
- nightmare
- depression
- deafness
- vertigo
- palpitations
- high blood pressure
- dilatation of the aorta (the main blood vessel)
- inflammation of the higher respiratory tract
- vomiting
- indigestion
- irritation and inflammation of the skin
- hair colour changes
- rash, itching
- night sweats
- back pain
- tiredness
- shivering
- tenderness
- chest pain
- sudden fever
- generalised aches and pains
- elevation of the liver enzymes, abrasion
Stop receiving MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- serious allergic reactions symptoms such as sudden onset breathing difficulty or wheezing, swollen mouth, face, hands or feet, itching skin, fainting, rapid pulse, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
- eye symptoms such as eye pain or increased discomfort, worsening eye redness, blurred or decreased vision, increased sensitivity to light, increased number of small particles in vision
How To Manage Side Effects
Eye pain Or Sensitivity
Place a cold washcloth over your closed eyes two to three times a day for five minutes.
Headache
Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.
Nausea And Vomiting
Take MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.

Driving and Using Machines
Use with CautionDo not drive or operate any heavy tools or machines if you feel temporary blurred vision after receiving MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION.
Allergy
ContraindicatedDo not receive MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION if you are allergic to Pegaptanib or any other ingredients of this medicine.
Use In Pediatrics
ContraindicatedMACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (below 18 years), Proper dose adjustments and careful monitoring are required in such patients.
Use In Geriatrics
Use with CautionMACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION should be used with caution in elderly patients (65 years and above). Consult your doctor before receiving the medicine.
Others
MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION is not recommended for use if you:
- have an infection in or around the eye

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking including prescriptions, non-prescriptions and herbal or natural remedies.
Overdosage:
MACUGEN 0.3MG INFUSION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if you experience any unpleasant symptoms.
