    Introduction About LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION contains Clonazepam which belongs to the group of medicines known as Benzodiazepines. It is used to manage epilepsy (fits) in infants, children and adults and also used to manage status epilepticus (severe epileptic attacks).

    Epilepsy is a common condition affecting the brain and causes frequent fits or seizures (bursts of electrical activity in the brain). Symptoms include uncontrollable jerking or shaking, loss of consciousness or collapse.

    Status epilepticus can be defined as an emergency condition in which a patient suffers seizures for more than 30 minutes or the occurrence of two or more episodes of seizures without regaining consciousness.

    During the therapy with LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION, your doctor may conduct a blood test to determine liver function and to check the disease progression.

    Do not consume alcohol after receiving LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION as it may provoke seizures and worsens side effects.

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients with lung diseases, severe liver disease, myasthenia gravis or sleep apnoea. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease, high or low blood pressure, depression, psychoses and schizophrenia. Consult your doctor before receiving the medicine.

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered clearly necessary. LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk and cause drowsiness and/or feeding difficulties in the baby.

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in neonates and especially premature infants. Your doctor will administer the right dose depending on your child’s age, body weight and disease condition.

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before receiving the medicine.

    Specific serious side effects of LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION include suicidal thoughts or actions. If at any time you experience such thoughts, immediately contact your doctor.

    The most common side effects of receiving LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION are sleepiness, drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, lethargy, unsteadiness, loss of memory, lack of attention, confusion, lack of concentration, slurred speech, inappropriate behaviour, impaired coordination and balance, nystagmus (involuntary, rapid eye movements). Contact your doctor if you experience any of the above side effects worsen.

    Uses Of LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION

    Used to manage:

    • epilepsy (seizures)
    • status epilepticus (severe epileptic attacks)

    How LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION Works

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION belongs to benzodiazepines which work by enhancing the activity of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) an inhibitory neurotransmitter (a chemical in the brain).

    How to use LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION will be given to you into a vein only by a doctor or a nurse. Your doctor will administer the correct dose and duration of management depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION

    Common

    • sleepiness, drowsiness, tiredness
    • pain at the injection site
    • dizziness
    • unsteadiness
    • loss of memory, lack of attention, confusion, lack of concentration
    • slurred speech
    • unpleasant dreams
    • muscle weakness
    • inappropriate behaviour
    • impaired coordination and balance

    Uncommon

    • blurred vision
    • lack of motivation
    • worsening of depression
    • short-term memory loss, anterograde amnesia (a type of memory loss)

    Rare

    • loss of libido
    • headache
    • nausea, gastrointestinal and epigastric symptoms
    • urticaria, pruritus, rash, and angioedema
    • hair loss
    • pigmentation changes
    • urinary incontinence
    • erectile dysfunction
    • decreased platelet count

    Contact your doctor immediately if you experience following side effects:

    • severe anxiety, aggression or agitation
    • hallucinations or delusions (seeing, hearing or feeling things that other people cannot)
    • suicidal thoughts
    • severe sleep disturbances
    • difficulty breathing
    • severe rash, itching or hives
    • swelling of the feet or ankles

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Headache:

    Rest and relax. Drink plenty of water and apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if needed. Do not consume alcohol. Contact your doctor if your headache persists for more than a week.

    Nausea or Vomiting:

    Receive the medicine, with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Contact your doctor if nausea worsens.

    Stomach pain:

    Try to rest and relax. Eat small meals but take frequently. Keep a heating pad on your stomach. Contact your doctor if the stomach pain does not improve.

    Dizziness:

    Lie down or sit down while you feel dizzy. Avoid driving or operating any machinery until you feel fine. If the symptom persists after a week or so, contact your doctor.

    Pregnancy

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

    Breastfeeding

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it passes through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

    Driving and Using Machines

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and decreased alertness. Do not drive or operate any machines after administration of LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION.

    Alcohol

    Do not consume alcohol after receiving LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION as it may provoke seizures and may worsen side effects.

    Kidney

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

    Liver

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver disease. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

    Allergy

    Do not receive LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION if you are allergic to Clonazepam or to foods, dyes or preservatives or to other ingredients of this medicine.

    Lungs

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients with lung diseases and breathing problems such as acute pulmonary insufficiency or severe or chronic lung diseases. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

    Heart Disease

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients suffering from high or low blood pressure. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

    Others

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION is not indicated for use if you:

    • suffer from myasthenia gravis (condition in which there is a varying degrees of muscle weakness).
    • suffer from narrow-angle glaucoma (serious eye condition in which increased pressure inside the eye leads to damage to the optic nerve).
    • suffer from sleep apnoea syndrome (sleep-related breathing disorder)
    • have a history of drug abuse

    Before receiving LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you:

    • have a history of depression and/or suicide attempts, psychosis, or schizophrenia
    • suffer from porphyria (blood disorder)
    • suffer from spinal or cerebral ataxia (condition in which you are shaky, unsteady, have slurred speech and rapid eye movements)
    • have an operation or dental management

    Use in pediatrics:

    Your doctor will administer the right dose depending on your child’s age, body weight and severity of the condition. Consult your doctor before receiving LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION. 

    Use in geriatrics:

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients due to the risk of drowsiness, confusion, dizziness, and unsteadiness which may increase the risk of a fall in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before receiving LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, sodium valproate, lamotrigine, primidone (medicines used for fits)
    • diazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam (medicines used to manage anxiety or to produce sleep)
    • cimetidine (medicine used to manage ulcers, heartburn)
    • rifampicin (medicine used for tuberculosis)
    • baclofen (medicine used to relax muscles)
    • amitriptyline, nortriptyline, phenelzine, isocarboxazid (medicines used for depression)
    • chlorpromazine, fluphenazine (medicines used to manage psychoses, schizophrenia)
    • lithium (medicine used to manage mental illness)
    • diphenhydramine (medicine used to manage allergies)
    • halothane (medicine used for anaesthesia)
    • ibuprofen, diclofenac (medicine used to relive pain)
    • levodopa (medicine used to manage Parkinson’s disease)
    • flumazenil (medicine used for benzodiazepines poisoning)

    Overdosage:

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. Consult your doctor or nurse in case you experience any unusual symptoms. Symptoms of overdosage are drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, difficulty in breathing, ataxia, dysarthria (slurred speech) and nystagmus (involuntary, rapid eye movements).

    LONAZEP 1MG INJECTION is primarily metabolized by the liver, and the metabolites are eliminated by the kidney. Due to the possibility of excess accumulation of metabolites in patients with kidney disease. It should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease.
