Introduction About KANCIN 1GM INJECTION
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION contains Kanamycin which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to manage tuberculosis with other antituberculosis drugs.
Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection spread through inhalation of droplets from the cough or sneeze of an infected person. Symptoms include persistent cough (sometimes with blood), weight loss, night sweats, fever, tiredness, fatigue, loss of appetite, swelling in the neck.
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with asthma, kidney disease, myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness), parkinsonism (a movement disorder). Consult your doctor before receiving it.
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION is not recommended for use in pregnant women. It should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before receiving it.
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in premature infants, new-born babies and in elderly patients due to decrease in kidney function. Consult your doctor before receiving it.
The most common side effects after receiving KANCIN 1GM INJECTION are skin rash, sudden loss of weight, diarrhoea, gas and vomiting. Contact your doctor if any of the symptoms worsen.

How KANCIN 1GM INJECTION Works
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION works by killing or managing the growth of bacteria in your body by interfering with the protein synthesis. Thus, managing infections effectively.
How to use KANCIN 1GM INJECTION
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse as an injection into the muscle (intramuscular injection) or into the vein (intravenous injection). Your doctor will decide the correct dosage and duration for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of KANCIN 1GM INJECTION
Common
- skin rash
- sudden loss of weight
- diarrhoea, flatulence and vomiting
Rare
Stop receiving KANCIN 1GM INJECTION and consult your doctor immediately in case you experience:
- hearing, dizziness or balance problems
- allergic reaction such as rash or swelling of the face, breathing difficulties
- nausea, dry mouth, sweating, thirst, watery or bloody diarrhoea
- stupor, irritability, lethargy
- unusual body reactions
- confusion, loss of balance, agitation
- bluish lips and skin
- chest pain
- coma
- cough
- depression
- drowsiness
- decreased urination
- swelling, pain or redness at injection site
- muscle twitching or weakness
How To Manage Side Effects
Vomiting:
Receive KANCIN 1GM INJECTION, with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Contact your doctor if your vomiting did not improve.
Skin rash:
Avoid hot bath because hot water can irritate your skin further. Do not scratch the affected area. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing while going outside. Use unscented moisturizers to soothe and hydrate the affected area. Contact your doctor if your rashes worsen.
Flatulence:
Eat smaller and frequent meals. Eat and drink slowly and exercise regularly. If the flatulence does not improve, contact your doctor.
Diarrhoea:
Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juices to keep yourself hydrated. Do not take any medicine on your own for managing diarrhoea. Contact your doctor if your diarrhoea did not improve.

Pregnancy
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION is not recommended for use in pregnant women as it may cause deafness in the unborn child. Consult your doctor before receiving it.
Breastfeeding
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION must be used with caution in breastfeeding women as it may pass through breastmilk. Consult your doctor before receiving it.
Driving and Using Machines
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION may cause hearing and balance problems. Hence, do not drive or operate machinery after receiving KANCIN 1GM INJECTION.
Kidney
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney impairment because of the increased risk of both ototoxicity (ear poisoning) and nephrotoxicity (rapid decrease in kidney function) and may require dose adjustment. Consult your doctor before receiving it.
Liver
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION can be used safely in patients with liver disease with no dose adjustment. Consult your doctor before receiving it.
Allergy
Do not receive KANCIN 1GM INJECTION if you are allergic to Kanamycin or to other aminoglycosides or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Lungs
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with asthma as this medicine may cause allergic-type reactions (asthmatic episodes). Consult your doctor before receiving it.
Others
Before receiving KANCIN 1GM INJECTION inform your doctor if you:
- have auditory dysfunction (hearing problems)
- have myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness)
- have parkinsonism (a movement disorder)
- have infant botulism (severe intestinal bacterial infection in infants)
Use in paediatrics:
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in premature infants and new-born babies because of the immaturity of the kidneys. Consult your doctor before administration.
Use in geriatric:
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients due to decrease in kidney function. Consult your doctor before receiving it.
Interactions
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before receiving KANCIN 1GM INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- antitubercular drugs Ex. streptomycin, amikacin (medicines used for the management of tuberculosis)
- antibiotics Ex. polymyxin, colistin, vancomycin, ampicillin, cefoperazone (medicines used for the management of bacterial infections)
- ciclosporin (used to manage rejection of transplant organ)
- amphotericin B (used for the management of fungal infections)
- cisplatin (a medicine used for the management of cancer)
- diuretics (used to remove extra fluid in the body) Ex. ethacrynic acid, mannitol, furosemide
- zalcitabine (used to manage HIV infections)
- botulinum toxin (used to manage muscle spasticity and dystonia)
- neostigmine, pyridostigmine (medicines used for the management of myasthenia gravis)
- bisphosphonates such as risedronic acid and alendronic acid (medicines used for the management of bone disorders)
- muscle relaxants (used to relax muscles in your body) Ex. baclofen, metaxalone
- oral anticoagulants (used to thin blood) Ex. warfarin
- neuromuscular blocking agents (medicines used during anaesthesia) Ex. pancuronium, rocuronium
Overdosage:
KANCIN 1GM INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms such as haematuria (blood in urine), low urine output, acute renal failure, hearing loss, nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), vertigo (reeling sensation), nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, acute muscular paralysis, apnoea (cessation of breathing during sleep), peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) and encephalopathy (numbness, paraesthesia, muscle twitching, fits) and muscle weakness.
