    Description

The Intersurgical I-Gel Supraglottic Airway is a second-generation airway device used for maintaining a patent airway during anaesthesia and resuscitation. This Size 5 device is designed for large adults weighing 90 kg or more. Its construction from a soft, medical-grade thermoplastic elastomer allows it to create an anatomical seal around the laryngeal structures without the need for an inflatable cuff. This design aims to facilitate rapid insertion and reduce the potential for compression trauma compared to traditional airway devices.

Non-Inflatable Anatomical Cuff: Features a soft, gel-like cuff that is designed to mirror the perilaryngeal anatomy, eliminating the need for cuff inflation and potentially reducing compression-related trauma. Integrated Gastric Channel: Incorporates a separate channel that allows for the insertion of a nasogastric tube to manage gastric contents, which can help reduce the risk of aspiration. Integral Bite Block: A built-in bite block runs the length of the device to prevent airway occlusion if the patient bites down. Buccal Cavity Stabiliser: Aids in insertion and is designed to prevent rotation of the device once it is in place, ensuring a stable airway. Epiglottic Rest: This feature helps to prevent the epiglottis from folding down and obstructing the airway opening.

Q: What is the Intersurgical i-gel supraglottic airway?

A: The i-gel is a single-use, second-generation supraglottic airway device used for maintaining an open airway during anaesthesia and resuscitation. It is made from a soft, gel-like medical-grade thermoplastic elastomer.

Q: What is the main feature of the i-gel?

A: Its primary feature is a non-inflatable cuff that is designed to create an anatomical seal over the laryngeal structures, which may reduce compression trauma compared to inflatable devices.

Q: Who is the size 5 i-gel intended for?

A: The size 5 i-gel is designed for large adults with a weight of 90 kg and over.

Q: Does this device contain latex?

A: No, the i-gel is a latex-free device, making it suitable for individuals with latex allergies.

Q: What is the purpose of the gastric channel?

A: The integrated gastric channel allows for the passage of a nasogastric tube to manage stomach contents, provides an early indication of regurgitation, and allows for venting, which is a safety feature to reduce the risk of aspiration.

    Key Benefits

Designed for rapid and straightforward insertion, making it suitable for routine and emergency situations. The soft, non-inflatable cuff is intended to reduce trauma to the airway structures during and after insertion. Provides gastric access, allowing for suctioning and helping to protect against aspiration. The anatomical design helps to provide a reliable seal over the laryngeal inlet. Comes in a sterile, single-use format, eliminating the need for re-sterilisation and reducing cross-contamination risk.

    Direction for Use/Dosage

For use by trained medical professionals only. 1. Select the correct size based on patient weight (Size 5 is for patients 90 kg and over). 2. Lubricate the back, sides, and front of the soft cuff with a water-based lubricant. 3. Position the patient in the 'sniffing the morning air' position, if not contraindicated. 4. Gently press down on the patient's chin and introduce the soft tip of the device into the mouth, gliding it along the hard palate until a definitive resistance is felt. Do not use excessive force. 5. Confirm correct placement by ventilating and checking for bilateral lung sounds and using waveform capnography, as per standard medical protocols.
