Introduction About FORTRAL KT INJECTION
FORTRAL KT INJECTION contains Ketorolac tromethamine, which belongs to the group of medicines called Painkillers. It is indicated for the short-term management of sudden moderately severe pain that occurs usually after any surgical procedureand musculoskeletal pain. Short term pain is referred as the duration of five days or less which is characterised by sudden and sharp in nature.
FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients taking other NSAIDs (Ex. aspirin) or those having advanced kidney, heart, cerebrovascular or gastrointestinal diseases or a tendency to bleed easily. Before receiving FORTRAL KT INJECTION, inform your doctor if you have liver, lung or heart diseases, high blood pressure or any autoimmune conditions (Ex. systemic lupus erythematosus, Crohn’s disease).
FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use in women who are planning to get pregnant, are pregnant, in labour or are breast-feeding. FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (below 16 years of age). FORTRAL KT INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients.
Avoid smoking with FORTRAL KT INJECTION management. The most common side effects of receiving FORTRAL KT INJECTION include indigestion, sleepiness, headache, sweating, dizziness, nausea, vomiting or injection site pain. Consult your doctor if any of the symptoms get worse or persist.

FORTRAL KT INJECTION is used for:
- short-term management of sudden moderate to severe pain that occurs usually after any surgical procedure
- musculoskeletal pain
How FORTRAL KT INJECTION Works
FORTRAL KT INJECTION works by blocking the effects of a substance produced during injury which causes inflammation and pain (prostaglandin) and it also inhibits the pain signals between the brain and nerve endings.
How to use FORTRAL KT INJECTION
FORTRAL KT INJECTION will be administered by your doctor or nurse by injection into a muscle or arm (intramuscular) or into your vein (intravenously). Your doctor will administer the right dose of FORTRAL KT INJECTION depending upon your age, body weight and health condition.
Side Effects Of FORTRAL KT INJECTION
Common
- indigestion, nausea, vomiting
- sleepiness
- sweating
- headache, dizziness
- injection site pain
- relaxed blood vessels
Uncommon
- sleep problems, increased dry mouth, abnormal dreams, anxiety, depression, tingling and prickling sensation
- nervousness, paranoid reaction, speech problem, temporary excitement
- increased libido, excessive thirst, trouble concentrating, stimulation
- gas, loss of appetite, constipation, diarrhea, feeling full, gastrointestinal bleeding or pain, dark sticky stool, rectal bleeding
- sore throat, inflamed or sore mouth
- liver function abnormalities
- high blood pressure, chest pain, fast heartbeat, bleeding, throbbing sensation, blood clot gets stuck in a blood vessel in the lung, blocking blood flow to that portion of the lung, paleness, flushing
- lack of energy, fever, back or neck pain, chills
- taste changes, ringing in ears
- blurred or double vision
- muscle pain or twitching
- asthma, cough increased, breathlessness, nosebleed, hiccup, rhinitis
- itching, rash, blood in fatty tissue, skin disorder
- burning urination, urinary retention, low urine output, increased urinary frequency
- inflammation of vagina
- swelling, low potassium levels, low blood volume
- low red blood cell count, coagulation disorder, purple spots on skin
Rare
- aseptic meningitis (stiff neck, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, fever, clouding of consciousness)
- serious skin reactions (Ex. Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, erythema multiforme)
Stop receiving FORTRAL KT INJECTION and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- serious stomach or gut problems (bleeding from the stomach seen as bloody vomit; bleeding from your back passage seen as black sticky stools or bloody diarrhoea; ulcers or holes in your stomach or gut seen as upset stomach with stomach pain, fever, nausea or vomiting; problems with your pancreas seen as severe stomach pain which radiates to your back; worsening of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease seen as pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, weight loss)
- allergic reaction (sudden swelling of your throat, face, hands or feet, trouble breathing, chest tightness, skin rashes, blisters or itching)
- severe skin rashes (severe rash that develops quickly, with blisters or peeling of your skin and possibly blisters in your mouth, throat or eyes, fever, headache, cough, hurting body)
- heart attack (chest pain which may spread to your neck and shoulders and down your left hand)
- stroke (muscle weakness and numbness, maybe only on one side of your body, a suddenly changed sense of smell, taste, hearing or vision, confusion)
- meningitis (fever, nausea, vomiting, a stiff neck, headache, sensitivity to bright light and confusion)
- liver problems (yellow skin or the whites of your eyes, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, pale coloured stools)
- problems passing urine (a feeling of fullness and a need to empty your bladder, but then trouble emptying it)
How To Manage Side Effects
Nausea or Vomiting:
Take regular sips of a cold drink. Have ginger or peppermint tea. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy foods. If symptom persists, contact your doctor.
Diarrhea:
Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Do not consume any medicine on your own without consulting your doctor.
Stomach pain:
Try to rest and relax. Try to have smaller and frequent meals. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Contact the doctor if the symptom worsens.
Dizziness
When you feel dizzy, lie or sit down immediately. Lie-down in a dark and quite place with eyes closed. Vehicle driving should be avoided if you experience frequent dizziness without warning. Discuss with your doctor if the symptom worsens.
Dry mouth:
Dry mouth can be managed by chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sugar-free hard candies to stimulate the flow of saliva. Sip water at regular intervals of time. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can be drying.

Pregnancy
FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use in women planning to get pregnant, are pregnant or are in labour. Consult your doctor for advice.

Breastfeeding
FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use in breastfeeding mothers. Consult your doctor for advice.

Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel tired, drowsy, dizzy, depressed, have problems with your balance or eyesight or have difficulty sleeping after receiving FORTRAL KT INJECTION.

Alcohol
Avoid consumption of alcohol while receiving FORTRAL KT INJECTION because you would be more likely to develop stomach problems.

Kidney
FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients with moderate or severe kidney disease. FORTRAL KT INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with other kidney problems. Consult your doctor for advice.

Liver
FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver problems. FORTRAL KT INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with other liver problems. Consult your doctor for advice.

Allergy
Do not receive FORTRAL KT INJECTION if you are allergic to Ketorolac tromethamine, aspirin, other similar medicines (Ex. ibuprofen, diclofenac) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, have allergies (like hay fever) or had swollen face, lips, eyes or tongue in the past.

Lungs
FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients with history of asthma. Consult your doctor for advice.

Heart Disease
FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients with severe heart problems. FORTRAL KT INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with other heart problems, previous stroke or patients who might be at risk of these conditions (Ex. high blood pressure or cholesterol), problems with the arteries anywhere in your body or hyperlipidaemia (too much fat in your blood). Consult your doctor for advice.
Others
FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use if you:
- have or had any problems with your stomach or gut, like an ulcer or bleeding
- had bleeding in your brain
- tend to bleed easily (Ex. haemophilia)
- have a low blood volume (due to bleeding or severe dehydration)
- have or had lumps in your nose (polyps)
- are going to undergo an operation
- have a high bleeding risk after an operation or are still bleeding after an operation
Before receiving FORTRAL KT INJECTION, inform your physician if you:
- have diabetes
- smoke
- have systemic lupus erythematosus (joint pain, skin rashes and fever
- have colitis (inflamed colon)
- have Crohn’s disease (conditions causing inflammation or pain in the bowel, diarrhoea, vomiting and weight loss)
Use in Pediatrics:
FORTRAL KT INJECTION is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (below 16 years of age). Consult your child’s doctor for advice.
Use in Geriatrics:
FORTRAL KT INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor for advice.
Interactions
A. Drug - Drug interactions:
Before receiving FORTRAL KT INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- other medicines used to reduce pain (Ex. aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac)
- medicines to stop your blood clotting (Ex. warfarin, heparin, clopidogrel)
- oxpentiphylline (used to manage blood flow problems in legs or arms)
- probenecid (used for gout)
- lithium (used for mania)
- medicines used for high blood pressure or other heart problems (Ex. cilazapril, enalapril, propranolol, furosemide, digoxin)
- medicines used for swelling and inflammation (Ex. hydrocortisone, prednisolone, dexamethasone)
- medicines used to manage bacterial infections (Ex. ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin)
- certain medicines used for mental health problems (Ex. fluoxetine, citalopram)
- methotrexate (used in arthritis or cancer management)
- medicines used for skin problems or after an organ transplant (Ex. ciclosporin, tacrolimus)
- zidovudine (used to manage HIV/AIDS infections)
- mifepristone (used to terminate pregnancy or to bring on labour if the baby has died)
Overdosage:
FORTRAL KT INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital and so you are unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if you feel any unusual symptoms.
