Introduction About CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE contains Tramadol which belongs to the group of medicines called Opioids. It is used in the management of moderate to severe pain (such as sudden or long-standing pain like pain after an operation or after an injury) in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older.
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver of kidney insufficiency, seizures (fits) which are not controlled by the management, who have consumed alcohol, withdrawal symptoms due to addiction of drugs or those have accidentally consumed extra dose of sleeping tablets, antipsychotics, antidepressants or other pain killers (which can slow down the breathing and reactions).
Before taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you have mild to moderate liver or kidney insufficiency, asthma or breathing trouble, recently had a head injury or have a very bad headache that makes you sick, had convulsions (fits) or suffer from epilepsy, have recently felt confused, sleepy or fainted, are going to have any surgery (which requires anaesthesia), have tendency to drug addiction or abuse and if you are addicted to morphine.
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in pregnant women and not more than once or alternatively in breastfeeding women. CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in children (below 12 years of age) and in children with breathing problems. It should be cautiously used among elderly patients (aged 75 years and above).
The most common side effects of taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE are nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, constipation and dry mouth. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects worsens.

How CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE Works
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE inhibits the reuptake of the natural neurotransmitters (norepinephrine and serotonin) and binds weakly to certain receptors (μ-opioid), blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain. Thus, it reduces moderate to severe pain by acting on specific nerve cells of the spinal cord and the brain.
How to use CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE
Take CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. You can take this medicine with or without food. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE
Common
- nausea and vomiting
- dizziness, headache
- sleepiness, drowsiness
- constipation
- sweating, dry mouth
Uncommon
- retching, feeling bloated or full
- skin reactions (such as itching, rash)
- palpitation, fast heartbeat, feeling faint or collapse (in patients with upright position or under physical strain)
Rare
- appetite changes
- convulsions (fits)
- tingling sensation and trembling
- slow heartbeat, increase in blood pressure
- blurred vision
- flushing
- muscle weakness
- difficulty or inability in passing urine
- psychic effects (such as changes in mood, activity, behaviour, perception, hallucinations, confusion, restlessness, sleep disturbances and nightmares)
Stop taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- slow or shallow breathing, confusion, sleepiness, small pupils, severe nausea and or constipation, constipation and lack of appetite
- extreme fatigue, lack of appetite, severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or low blood pressure (signs of adrenal insufficiency (low cortisol levels))
- symptoms of an allergic reaction (such as swollen face or throat, difficulty in breathing and wheezing, changes in heart rate, fainting, collapse or unconsciousness due to a drop in blood pressure or convulsions)
- sleep-related breathing disorders such as sleep apnea or hypoexmia (signs include breathing pauses during sleep, night awakening due to shortness of breath, difficulties to maintain sleep or excessive drowsiness during the day)
How To Manage Side Effects
Nausea or vomiting:
Stick to simple meals while taking this medicine. Avoid eating oily rich, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Inform your doctor if the symptom does not improve .
Constipation:
Try to eat more high-fiber foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, cereals and drink plenty of water. If this does not help, consult your doctor for receiving alternate management for constipation.
Headache:
Drink ample amount of water and avoid skipping meals. Get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress free. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve
Dry mouth:
Sip water regularly and other sugar free liquids. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can make your mouth dry, use mouthwash that is used only for dry mouth. Limit your caffeine intake. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Dizziness:
Lie down until dizziness is gone, then get up slowly. Move slowly and carefully, do not hurry. Get adequate rest. Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Avoid coffee, cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.
Warning & Precautions
Pregnancy
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use during pregnancy because it may cross the placenta and its safety is not established in pregnant women. If you have severe pain, consult your doctor for advice who has to decide whether you can take single doses.
Breastfeeding
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use more than once or alternatively in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE.
Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel sleepiness, blurred vision, impaired reaction and dizziness after taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE.
Alcohol
Do not consume alcohol while taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE as it may increase the effects of this medicine.
Kidney
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney insufficiency. It should be taken with caution in patients with mild to moderate kidney insufficiency and your doctor may prolong the dosing interval. Consult your doctor before taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE.
Liver
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver insufficiency. It should be used with caution in patients with mild to moderate liver insufficiency and your doctor may prolong the dosing interval. Consult your doctor before taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE.
Allergy
Do not take CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE if you are allergic to Tramadol or any other ingredients of this medicine.
Lungs
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in patients with asthma or trouble breathing. Consult your doctor before taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE.
Others
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use if you:
- have epilepsy (fits) which is not properly controlled by the management
- have withdrawal symptoms (due to addiction of drugs)
- have accidentally consumed extra dose of sleeping tablets, antipsychotics, antidepressants or other pain killers (which can slow down the breathing and reactions)
Before taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you:

Use in paediatrics:
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in children (under 12 years of age). It is also not recommended for children having breathing problems because the toxicity symptoms of this medicine will be worse in these children. Consult your child’s doctor for advice.
Use in geriatrics:
CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 75 years) due to delayed excretion of this medicine and your doctor may prolong the dosing interval of CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE. Consult your doctor before taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE.
Interactions
A. Drug - Drug interactions:
Before taking CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- monoamine oxidase inhibitors (medicines used to manage depression) Ex. isocarboxazid, phenelzine and selegiline (used to manage parkinson’s disease)
- carbamazepine (used to manage fits)
- medicines used to manage pain (Ex. pentazocine, nalbuphine, buprenorphine, morphine and codeine)
- ondansetron (used to manage nausea)
- antidepressants such as fluoxetine, escitalopram (used to manage depression)
- antipsychotics such as clozapine, amisulpride (used to manage schizophrenia disorders)
- warfarin (used to manage or manage blood clots)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of CONTRAMAL 50MG CAPSULE, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are excessive constriction of pupil of the eye, vomiting, sedation, seizures, coma, cardiovascular collapse and respiratory depression.
