Introduction About COLIFEROL SACHET

COLIFEROL SACHET contains Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) which belongs to the group of medicines called Vitamin D analogue. It is used to manage Vitamin D deficiency. This may occur when your diet or lifestyle does not provide you with enough vitamin D or when your body requires more vitamin D during pregnancy.

Along with this management, your doctor might advise you to eat and drink foods rich in calcium. Your doctor might want to take certain blood tests prior to the management to understand the existing condition.

COLIFEROL SACHET is not recommended for use if you have high levels of calcium in the blood, malabsorption syndrome, hypervitaminosis D, renal osteodystrophy (kidney disease weakening the bones) with hyperphosphataemia.

Before taking COLIFEROL SACHET, inform your doctor if you have impaired kidney or liver function, are immobilized due to osteoporosis, sarcoidosis (a multisystem chronic inflammatory condition which can affect your lungs, heart and kidneys) and hyperlipidemia (high lipid levels).

COLIFEROL SACHET should be used with caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women. It should be used with caution in children and elderly patients. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual effects during management with this medicine.

How COLIFEROL SACHET Works

COLIFEROL SACHET helps the body to absorb calcium and phosphorus by increasing their absorption from the gut and reducing the amount removed by the kidneys and is a fat-soluble vitamin.

How to use COLIFEROL SACHET

Take COLIFEROL SACHET as directed by the physician. Pour the contents of the sachet into a glass of water or milk. Stir with a spoon to obtain a pleasant-tasting suspension. Drink immediately. Your doctor will decide the right dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.

Warning & Precautions

Pregnancy

COLIFEROL SACHET should be used with caution in pregnant women or women planning to have a baby as safety and effectiveness have not been established yet. Overdosage of this medicine can harm the fetus. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Breastfeeding

COLIFEROL SACHET should be used with caution in breastfeeding women as small amounts of it pass into the breast milk. Your doctor will monitor the levels of calcium in your blood and the breastfed baby. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Kidney

COLIFEROL SACHET is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney disease or renal osteodystrophy (kidney disease weakening the bones) with hyperphosphatemia. It should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment. Consult your doctor before taking COLIFEROL SACHET.

Liver

COLIFEROL SACHET should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking COLIFEROL SACHET.

Allergy

Do not take COLIFEROL SACHET if you are allergic to Cholecalciferol or any other ingredients of this medicine.

Interactions

A. Drug-Drug Interactions:

Before taking COLIFEROL SACHET, inform your doctor, if you are taking any of the following medicines:

• medicines used to manage epilepsy (Ex phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone)
• other vitamin D-containing medicines including multi-vitamins
•  medicines used to control the rate of your heartbeat (Ex. digoxin, digitoxin)
• thiazide diuretics (water tablets) Ex. Bendroflumethiazide (used to manage fluid retention)
• calcium supplements
• antacids for indigestion (Ex. magnesium hydroxide)
• medicine used to manage fungal infections (Ex. ketoconazole)
• corticosteroids Ex. hydrocortisone or prednisolone (used to manage the inflammatory condition)
• laxatives such as paraffin oil (used to manage constipation)
• cholestyramine used to manage high cholesterol
• phosphate binding agents Ex. sevelamer (used to control high levels of phosphorous in the blood)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of COLIFEROL SACHET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose include hypervitaminosis, hypercalciuria and hypercalcaemia (signs include loss of appetite, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disturbances, excess thirst or urination, bone pain, nephrocalcinosis, renal calculi and in severe cases it may cause cardiac arrhythmias.
