INTRODUCTION ABOUT COFDEX PLUS SYRUP
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP is a combination of Chlorpheniramine and Dextromethorphan which belongs to the group of medicines called Antihistamines and Antitussives respectively. It is used to relieve cough due to throat or bronchial irritation, sneezing and running nose caused by cold, dry cough, allergic cough, post-operative cough, smokers cough and night-time cough. It is also used to manage hay fever or upper respiratory allergies such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, itching of the nose and throat.
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking this medicine as this may lead to unwanted effects. COFDEX PLUS SYRUP is not recommended for use in patients with or at risk of developing, respiratory failure (Ex. chronic obstructive airways disease or pneumonia or an exacerbation of asthma).
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with lung disease, severe kidney or heart diseases.
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Contact your doctor before taking.
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP is not recommended for use in children under 2 years of age. Contact your doctor before taking.
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years or above). Contact your doctor before taking.
The most common side effects of this medicine are sedation, somnolence, disturbance in attention, abnormal coordination, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, abdominal discomfort, fatigue. Contact your physician if any of the symptoms worsen.

HOW COFDEX PLUS SYRUP WORKS
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP helps to manage cough, where Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine works by blocking the histamine H1 receptor and manages the release of histamine (which normally produces symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes and runny nose) and Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant which relieves cough by acting on the cough centre in the brain. Together relives cough effectively.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take COFDEX PLUS SYRUP as advised by your physician. Shake well before use. Your physician will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
SIDE EFFECTS OF COFDEX PLUS SYRUP
COMMON
- sedation, somnolence
- disturbance in attention, abnormal coordination
- dizziness, drowsiness, headache
- blurred vision
- nausea, vomiting
- dry mouth
- abdominal discomfort
- fatigue
RARE
Stop taking COFDEX PLUS SYRUP and contact your physician immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reactions such as itching, rash, hives, redness, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat causing difficulty in breathing or sudden drop in blood pressure causing collapse
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea or Vomiting:
Take this medicine with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy foods. Contact your doctor if nausea or vomiting bothers you.
Dizziness:
Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operate any machines while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume alcohol, as it can aggravate your dizziness. Contact your doctor if dizziness persists.
Headache:
Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids such as water and electrolytes. Apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if necessary. Do not consume alcohol. Contact your doctor if your headache did not improve.
Stomach pain:
Try to rest and relax. Eat small meals but take frequently. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Contact your doctor if the stomach pain worsens.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP is generally not recommended for use in pregnancy. Contact your doctor before taking.

BREASTFEEDING
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Contact your doctor before taking.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision and psychomotor impairment after taking COFDEX PLUS SYRUP.

ALCOHOL
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking COFDEX PLUS SYRUP as it may lead to unwanted effects.

KIDNEY
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Contact your doctor before taking.

LIVER
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Contact your doctor before taking.

ALLERGY
Do not take COFDEX PLUS SYRUP if you are allergic to Chlorpheniramine, Dextromethorphan or to other ingredients of this medicine.

LUNGS
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP is not recommended for use in patients with or at risk of developing, respiratory failure (Ex. chronic obstructive airways disease or pneumonia or an exacerbation of asthma) and should be used with caution in patients with asthma, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, emphysema. Contact your doctor before taking.

HEART DISEASE
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with severe heart diseases and severe hypertension. Contact your doctor before taking.
OTHERS
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP is not recommended for use if you have:
- confusion
- rare hereditary problems like fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption and sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency
Before taking COFDEX PLUS SYRUP, inform your doctor if you have:
- epilepsy
- glaucoma
- urinary retention
- prostatic enlargement
- pyloroduodenal obstruction
- thyrotoxicosis
- diabetes
Use in pediatrics:
Your doctor will prescribe the right dose depends on your child’s age, body weight and disease condition. Contact your doctor before taking COFDEX PLUS SYRUP.
Use in geriatrics:
COFDEX PLUS SYRUP should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years or above). Contact your doctor before taking.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Inform your physician, if you are taking:
- hypnotics or anxiolytics Ex. alprazolam, diazepam, lorazepam (medicines that induces sleep and to manage anxiety)
- sedatives Ex. phenobarbital, pentobarbital (medicines used to reduce excitement)
- opioid analgesics like tramadol, morphine, codeine, methadone (medicines used for severe pain)
- fluphenazine, thioridazine, haloperidol, perphenazine (medicines used to manage psychoses)
- antimuscarinic drugs Ex. dicyclomine (medicines used to relax stomach and intestine)
- fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, amitriptyline, imipramine, selegiline, rasagiline, bupropion (medicines used for depression)
- cough and cold medicines
- phenytoin (medicines used to manage fits)
- quinidine, amiodarone, propafenone and flecainide (medicines used to manage heart rhythm disorders)
- cinacalcet (medicine used to manage hyperparathyroidism)
- terbinafine (medicines used to manage fungal infections)
- antihistamines (drugs used to manage the symptoms of allergic reactions) Ex. dimenhydrinate
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally took too much of this medicine, consult your doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdosage are drowsiness, lethargy, nystagmus, ataxia, depression, nausea, vomiting and hyperactivity, excitation, mental confusion, tremors, psychosis, hallucinations, high fever and convulsions, restlessness, nervousness and irritability, stupor, dystonia and respiratory depression.
