    Introduction About BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION

    BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION contains Exenatide which belongs to the group of medicines called Antihyperglycemic agents. It is used to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes in combination with metformin and sulfonylurea, when metformin or sulfonylurea plus diet and exercise have failed to adequately control blood sugar levels. BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION is also used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes in combination with insulin glargine (with or without metformin) when insulin glargine (with or without metformin) plus diet and exercise have failed to adequately control blood sugar levels.

    Avoid taking meals before receiving BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION. This medicine is not recommended if you have diabetic ketoacidosis and type 1 diabetes. Before receiving BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION, inform your doctor if you have or had severe problems with stomach (gastroparesis), severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration or a history of pancreatitis. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION use in pregnant women. Hence it should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus. This medicine should be administered with caution in breastfeeding women.

    The most common side effects of receiving BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, feeling jittery, dizziness, headache, acid stomach, heartburn and injection site reactions (rash, itching, bruising). Consult your doctor if any of the above side effects persists for a longer duration.

    • It is used to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes in combination with metformin, sulfonylurea and insulin glargine (with or without metformin), when metformin, sulfonylurea, insulin glargine, diet and exercise have failed to adequately control blood sugar levels

    How BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION Works

    BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics several antihyperglycemic actions of incretins. This stimulates in vivo secretion of insulin from pancreatic beta cells by mechanisms involving cyclic AMP and or other intracellular signaling pathways. Hence BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION improves glycemic control by reducing fasting and postprandial glucose concentrations in patients with type 2 diabetes.

    How to use BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION

    BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION will be administered under the skin (as subcutaneous injection) in your upper leg (thigh), stomach area (abdomen), or upper arm by your doctor or nurse. It will not be administered into a vein or muscle. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION

    Common

    • nausea
    • vomiting
    • diarrhea
    • feeling jittery
    • dizziness
    • headache
    • acid stomach, heartburn
    • injection site reactions (rash, itching, bruising)
    • hypoglycaemia

    Uncommon

    • decreased kidney function
    • dehydration, generally associated with nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhoea
    • unusual taste in the mouth
    • burping
    • sleepiness
    • hair loss
    • weight decreased
    • delay in the emptying of the stomach
    • inflamed gallbladder
    • gallstones

    Rare

    • intestinal obstruction (blockage in intestine)

    Stop receiving BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects such as:

    • severe allergic reactions (swelling of the face, tongue or throat, rashes, itching and rapid swelling of the tissues of the neck, face, mouth or throat, difficulty to swallow, hives and difficulties to breathe)
    • severe and persistent stomach pain, with or without vomiting (inflammation of the pancreas)

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Dizziness Or Drowsiness

    Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Consult your doctor if your dizziness worsens.

    Headache

    Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

    Nausea And Vomiting

    Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if your vomiting worsens.

    Driving and Using Machines

    BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION has minor influence on the ability to drive and use machines. When it is used in combination with a sulphonylurea, it may cause hypoglycaemia.

    Alcohol

    Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcoholism.

    Kidney

    Consult your doctor

    BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION is not recommended for use if you have severe kidney disease or are on dialysis. It should be used with caution if you have or had kidney disorder or kidney transplant. Consult your doctor for advice.

    Allergy

    Contraindicated

    Do not receive BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION if you are allergic to Exenatide or any other ingredients of this medicine.

    Heart Disease

    BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION should be used with caution if you have or had current or history of heart failure, heart disease, angina, heart rhythm disturbances, myocardial infarction or high heart rate (fast pulse). Consult your doctor for advice.

    Use In Pediatrics

    There is no experience with BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION in children and adolescents less than 18 years and therefore, use of this medicine is not recommended in this age group.

    Use In Geriatrics

    BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients above 65 years of age. Consult your doctor for advice.

    Others

    BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION is not recommended for use if you:

    • have diabetic ketoacidosis (accumulation of ketones in the blood and urine)
    • have type 1 diabetes

    Before receiving BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you have or had:

    • severe problems with your stomach (gastroparesis) or food digestion
    • severe vomiting, diarrhea or dehydration
    • history of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
    • stones in gallbladder (gallstones)
    • history of alcoholism
    • high blood triglyceride levels
    • a personal history of fainting spells
    • electrolyte disturbances  
    • medullary thyroid cancer
    • Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
    • been diagnosed with pituitary or adrenal failure
    • eating disorders, are on a special diet, or often skip meals

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before receiving BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:

    • glyburide, gliclazide, glimepiride (used to manage blood glucose levels)
    • birth control pill (oral contraceptive)
    • antibiotic (used to manage infections)
    • warfarin (used for blood clot)
    • digoxin (used for heart diseases and heart rhythm disturbances)
    • lisinopril (used to manage hypertension)
    • acetaminophen (used for pain and fever)
    • lovastatin (used to manage cholesterol levels)
    • antivirals (used for HIV infection)
    • diuretics (water pills)

    Overdosage:

    BYETTA PEN 5MG INJECTION will be administered by your doctor or nurse, so it is unlikely to cause an overdose. However, if you experience vomiting, dizziness, or symptoms of low blood sugar, consult your doctor immediately or nearby hospital.
