Introduction About BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY
BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY contains Butorphanol, which belongs to the group of medicines called Opioid agonist/antagonist analgesics. It is used to manage moderate to severe pain. Pain is an uncomfortable sensation in the body which stems from activation of the nervous system it generally occurs as an annoying or debilitating sensation which can be characterized as a sharp, dull, throbbing, pinching, stinging, and/or burning sensation in affected individuals.
Before taking BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY, inform your doctor if you have a head injury or increased intracranial pressure (increased pressure in the head), respiratory, hepatic, or renal impairment, and/or heart diseases (such as acute myocardial infarction, ventricular dysfunction, or coronary insufficiency).
In pregnant and breastfeeding women, BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY should be used with caution. It is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). It should be used with caution in elderly patients (those over the age of 65). The most common side effects associated with the use of BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY are excessive sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, nasal congestion, sleeplessness, and/or lethargy. Consult your doctor if any of your symptoms get worse.

How BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY Works
BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY works by blocking certain receptors (responsible for pain) in the brain and spinal cord which leads to blockage of pain transmission thus providing relief from moderate to severe acute pain in affected individuals.
How to use BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY
Take BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY as advised by your physician. It is for intranasal use only. Blow your nose. Pull the clear cover off the pump unit. Remove the protective clip. Before the initial use, prime the unit by pumping the sprayer until a fine mist appears. Insert the spray tip approximately 1 cm into one nostril, close the other nostril with your forefinger, and pump the spray unit firmly and quickly. Your doctor will determine the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight, and disease condition.

How To Manage Side Effects
Headache:
Take a rest and relax. Stay hydrated. Do not skip your meals. Consult your doctor if the condition persists or gets worse.
Dizziness:
Lie down until the dizziness passes and try to get up slowly. Do not bend down suddenly. Get a lot of rest. Walk slowly and carefully. Take plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Avoid drinking coffee, alcohol, or smoking. Consult your doctor if the condition persists or gets worse.
Constipation:
Try to eat more high-fibre foods, such as fresh fruit, vegetables, and cereals, and drink plenty of water. Try doing exercise regularly (going for a daily walk or run). Consult your doctor if the condition persists or gets worse.
Nausea and vomiting:
Try to take BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.
Warning & Precautions
Pregnancy
BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY should be used with caution in pregnant women only if it is considered necessary. However, it is not recommended for use during labour/delivery as its safety and risks are not known. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
Breastfeeding
BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY should be used with caution in breastfeeding mothers. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or operate machines after taking BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY as this medicine can make you feel drowsy and dizzy. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
Alcohol
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY because it may cause drowsiness, dizziness, and/or impaired mental function.
Kidney
BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
Liver
BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY should be used with caution in patients with liver disease such as hepatic impairment. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
Allergy
BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY is not recommended for use if you are allergic to butorphanol tartrate, benzethonium chloride, or any other ingredients in this medicine. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
Lungs
BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY should be used with caution for patients with lung problems such as respiratory impairment. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
Heart Disease
BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY should be used with caution in patients with heart diseases such as acute myocardial infarction, ventricular dysfunction, and coronary insufficiency only if it is necessary. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
Others
Before taking BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY, inform your doctor if you:
- have a head injury and increased intracranial pressure (increased pressure inside the head)
- are in ambulatory (inability to walk) condition
Use in Paediatrics:

Interactions
A. Drug-Drug Interactions:
Before taking BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY, inform your doctor, if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- barbiturates (medicines used to manage sleep disorders) Ex. amobarbital
- tranquillizers (medicines used to manage anxiety), such as benzodiazepines (Ex. diazepam)
- antihistamines (medicines used to manage allergies) Ex. cimetidine
- triptans (medicines used to manage migraine) Ex. sumatriptan
- erythromycin, theophylline (medicines that can affect the metabolism of certain drugs in the liver)
- oxymetazoline (a medicine used to stimulate vascular constriction in the nose)
- monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (medicines used to manage psychiatric disorders) Ex. phenelzine
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of BUTRUM NASAL SPRAY, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are respiratory depression, heart failure, central nervous system depression, and coma.
