Introduction About BRIOGUT SYRUP
BRIOGUT SYRUP contains Saccharomyces boulardii which belongs to the group of medicines called Probiotics. BRIOGUT SYRUP is used to manage acute infectious diarrhoea in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) which is also used to manage antibiotic associated colitis (inflammatory bowel disease) and diarrhoea.
BRIOGUT SYRUP is also used in addition to vancomycin/metronidazole (antibiotic) medicines to manage recurrent Clostridium difficile diseases (colon infection) and manage tube-feeding associated diarrhoea in affected children. The medicine is also indicated for use in children to manage irritable bowel syndrome (intestinal disorder).
BRIOGUT SYRUP is not recommended for use in children allergic to Saccharomyces boulardii. It is also not recommended for use in children with central venous catheter (long flexible tube inserted into the vein of neck, chest, arm, and/or groin), and in children who are immunocompromised/hospitalised (due to serious illness, and/or altered/weakened immune system).
Before administering BRIOGUT SYRUP, inform your doctor if the child has kidney problems (such as chronic kidney disease), and/or had undergone liver transplantation. BRIOGUT SYRUP is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women as it is intended to be used only in children.
BRIOGUT SYRUP should be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) and is advised not to be used in elderly patients as it is intended to be used only in children. Consult your doctor before administering the medicine to the child.
The most common side effects of administering BRIOGUT SYRUP in child are constipation, bloating, and/or faecal incontinence. Consult your doctor if any of these symptoms worsens in child.
Uses Of BRIOGUT SYRUP
Used in paediatric patients:
- Manage acute infectious diarrhoea in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years)
- Manage and manage antibiotic associated colitis (inflammatory bowel disease) and diarrhoea.
- Manage recurrent Clostridium difficile diseases (colon infection) and manages tube-feeding associated diarrhoea.
- Manage irritable bowel syndrome (intestinal disorder)
How BRIOGUT SYRUP Works
BRIOGUT SYRUP works by inhibiting protease enzyme (responsible for protein breakdown) which helps to manage development of bacterial overgrowth, host cell adherence, and provides a protective effect to the normal healthy gut flora thus managing inflammation of gut and reducing frequency of passing stool and tiredness in children affected with diarrhoea.
How to use BRIOGUT SYRUP
Syrup:
Administer BRIOGUT SYRUP to the child as advised by your physician. Shake well before use. Your doctor will decide the exact dose and duration of management for your child depending on child’s age, body weight and disease condition.
Dry Syrup:
Administer BRIOGUT SYRUP to the child as advised by your physician.
Reconstitute the dry powder in required quantity of water and administer it to the child. Your doctor will decide the exact dose and duration of management for your child depending on child’s age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of BRIOGUT SYRUP

Rare

Others
Stop administering BRIOGUT SYRUP and contact your doctor if your child experience any of the following side effects:
- deterioration of health after 2 days of management
- fever, vomiting
- presence of blood/mucus in stools
- signs of dehydration such as intense thirst, dryness of tongue
How To Manage Side Effects
Constipation:
Ask the child to eat high-fiber foods such as vegetables, cereals, and/or fresh fruit, and have the child drink plenty of water. If this does not help, then consult and inform your doctor to receive alternate managements for constipation.
Warning & Precautions
Pregnancy
BRIOGUT SYRUP is not recommended for use in pregnant women as it is intended to be used only in children. Consult your doctor before administering the medicine to the child.
Breastfeeding
BRIOGUT SYRUP is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it is intended to be used only in children. Consult your doctor before administering the medicine to the child.
Kidney
BRIOGUT SYRUP should be used with caution in children with kidney problems such as chronic kidney disease. Consult your doctor before administering the medicine to the child.
Liver
BRIOGUT SYRUP should be used with caution in children who had undergone hepatic transplant. Consult your doctor before administering the medicine to the child.
Allergy
Do not administer BRIOGUT SYRUP if your child is allergic to Saccharomyces boulardii, and/or any other ingredients of this medicine.
Others
BRIOGUT SYRUP is not recommended for your child:
- has central venous catheter (long flexible tube inserted into the vein of neck, chest, arm, and/or groin to receive drugs, fluids or blood in emergency or long-term management).
- is immunocompromised/hospitalised (due to serious illness, and/or altered/weakened immune system)
- has fructose intolerance
- suffers from congenital galactosemia (inability to break down galactose sugar), glucose and galactose malabsorption syndrome, and/or lactose intolerance
Use in Pediatrics:
BRIOGUT SYRUP should be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
Use in Geriatrics:
BRIOGUT SYRUP is not recommended for use in elderly patients as it is intended to be used only in children.
Interactions
A. Drug – Drug interactions:
Before administering BRIOGUT SYRUP, inform your doctor if your child is taking any of the following medicines:
- oral antifungal agents (medicines used to manage fungal infections) Ex. Ketoconazole, clotrimazole, amphotericin.
B. Drug – Food interactions:
Avoid giving too hot/cold food items to child while administering BRIOGUT SYRUP since it may reduce the effect of medicine. Consult your doctor before administering the medicine to the child.
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally administers too much of BRIOGUT SYRUP to the child, then consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital to manage overdose symptoms in the child.
