Description
The Becton Dickinson (BD) Venflon Pro Safety IV Cannula is a peripheral intravenous catheter designed to facilitate venous access for administering fluids and medications. It is engineered to reduce the risk of needlestick injuries for healthcare professionals and minimise unanticipated blood spatter. The cannula is made from BD Vialon™ catheter material, a polyurethane that softens inside the vein, potentially allowing for longer dwell times and reducing the risk of mechanical phlebitis. This single-use, sterile device is intended for use in hospital and clinical settings.
Passive Safety Mechanism: A needle shield automatically covers the needle tip upon withdrawal, providing protection from accidental needlestick injuries. Back-Cut Needle Design: The needle is designed with a back-cut bevel for smoother skin and vein penetration, which may enhance patient comfort during insertion. Flexible Wings: The cannula features flexible wings that help to stabilise it once in the vein, providing secure and comfortable placement for the patient. BD Vialon™ Catheter Material: The catheter is made of a biocompatible material that softens by up to 70% once inside the vein, which can improve dwell time. Injection Port with Snap Cap: It includes a ported design with a "snap cap" to facilitate needle-free administration of medications and helps prevent the port from being left open accidentally.

Direction for Use/Dosage
For use by a qualified healthcare professional only. Disinfect the selected insertion site and allow it to air dry completely. Apply a tourniquet and remove the needle cover. Stabilize the vein and insert the cannula at a low angle, observing for primary blood flashback in the chamber. Lower the device so it is almost parallel to the skin and advance it a few millimeters further to ensure the catheter tip is inside the vein. Hold the needle stationary and advance the cannula fully into the vein. Release the tourniquet, apply pressure to the vein just beyond the cannula tip, and withdraw the needle; the safety shield will automatically activate. Dispose of the needle in a sharps container. Connect the primed extension set, flush to verify placement, and secure the cannula with a sterile dressing.
