    Introduction About AXEPINE 100 TABLET

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET contains Amoxapine which belongs to the group of medicines called Antidepressants. It is used to provide relief from depression symptoms with neurotic (depression in emotionally unstable individuals) or reactive depressive disorder (depression due to external factors like stress) including psychotic (depression that requires hospitalization) and endogenous depression (depression that occurs without any cause). It is also used to manage depression accompanied by anxiety or agitation.

    Depression is a type of mood disorder that leads to a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest which may worsen with time. It is generally characterized by symptoms such as sadness, tearfulness, emptiness, hopelessness, sleeplessness, anxiety, agitation, irritability, and/or frustration.

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET is not recommended for use if you are allergic to amoxapine and/or dibenzoazepine compounds. It is also not recommended for use in patients in the recovery phase following myocardial infarction (heart attack).

    Before taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET, inform your doctor if you have a major depressive disorder, manic depression, schizophrenia, liver or kidney impairment, angle-closure glaucoma or history of urinary retention.

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women which is also used with caution in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). Consult your doctor for advice before taking the medicine.

    The common side effects associated with the use of AXEPINE 100 TABLET are drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, headache and increased appetite. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects worsen.

    How AXEPINE 100 TABLET Works

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET works by decreasing the uptake of certain neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) that helps in mood regulation thus producing a calm and suppressed effect in patients affected with disorders of depression and providing a relief from its associated symptoms.

    How to use AXEPINE 100 TABLET

    Take AXEPINE 100 TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of AXEPINE 100 TABLET

    Common

    • dry mouth
    • constipation
    • blurred vision, drowsiness
    • restlessness, sleeplessness
    • nervousness, tremors
    • awareness of heartbeat
    • confusion, excitement
    • ataxia (impaired muscle control)
    • oedema (fluid retention)
    • skin rash
    • nausea
    • dizziness, headache
    • weakness, fatigue
    • excessive appetite
    • increased sweating

    Uncommon

    • disturbances in eye focussing, dilated pupils
    • delayed urination or retention
    • nasal stuffiness
    • low or high blood pressure
    • transient loss of consciousness
    • fast heartbeat
    • drug fever
    • signs of allergic reaction such as itchy welts
    • sensitivity to light
    • tingling, numbness, burning or prickling sensation in extremities
    • ringing in ears
    • seizures, disorientation
    • incoordination, disturbed concentration
    • extrapyramidal symptoms such as tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled facial movements)
    • epigastric distress (pain below ribs)
    • vomiting
    • flatulence, abdominal pain
    • peculiar taste
    • diarrhoea
    • increased or decreased libido, impotence
    • menstrual irregularity
    • breast enlargement and galactorrhoea (abnormal milky discharge from breasts) in women
    • excessive tear secretion from the eyes
    • weight gain or loss
    • painful ejaculation

    Rare

    • paralytic ileus (paralysis of muscles that contract to move food through the intestines)
    • irregular heartbeat
    • heart attack or block, stroke
    • hallucinations
    • purpura (purple spots or patches on the skin)
    • petechiae (pinpoint bleeding under the skin)
    • swelling of parotid gland (a salivary gland located in the cheeks)
    • jaundice (condition which eyes and skin turn yellow)
    • abnormal urinary frequency
    • testicular swelling
    • an eating disorder causing weight loss or gain
    • hair loss

    Stop taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:   

    • agitation, irritability, unusual changes in behaviour and suicidal thoughts
    • signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a fatal reaction to antipsychotic drugs) such as fever, muscle rigidity, altered mental status
    • severe rash, fever
    • signs of tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled facial movements) such as blinking rapidly, chewing motions, frowning

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Constipation

    Try to eat more high-fibre foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, cereals and drink plenty of water. Try doing exercise regularly (going for a daily walk or run). If this does not help, inform your doctor for receiving alternate managements for constipation.

    Dry mouth

    Sip water regularly and other sugar-free liquids. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can make your mouth dry, use mouthwash that is used only for dry mouth. Limit your caffeine intake. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve

    Headache

    Take rest and plenty of water. Avoid taking alcohol and skipping meals. Do not strain your eyes by watching a screen for long time. Consult your doctor if the condition persists for a long or gets worsens.

    Dizziness:

    Try to rest and get enough sleep. Try to avoid driving or operating any tools or machines while you feel dizzy. Limit consumption of alcohol, as it can aggravate dizziness. Consult and inform your doctor if the symptom worsens.

    Nausea and vomiting:

    Try to take AXEPINE 100 TABLET with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich, fried or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if symptom gets worse.

    Warning & Precautions

    Pregnancy

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET should be used with caution in pregnant women only if it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET.

    Breastfeeding

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET should be used with caution in breastfeeding women as it passes through the milk. Consult your doctor before taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Do not drive or operate any machines while taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET as it may cause drowsiness. Consult your doctor before taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET.

    Alcohol

    Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET as it may alter the effect of this medicine.

    Kidney

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment. Consult your doctor before taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET.

    Liver

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET should be used with caution in patients with hepatic impairment. Consult your doctor before taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET.

    Allergy

    Do not take AXEPINE 100 TABLET if you are allergic to amoxapine or dibenzoazepine compounds.

    Heart Disease

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET is not recommended for use in patients in acute recovery phase following myocardial infarction. Consult your doctor before taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET.

    Others

    Before taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET, inform your doctor if you:  

    • have signs of major depressive disorder and other psychiatric disorders such as feeling worthless, impaired concentration, restlessness and/or feeling slowed down
    • have manic depression (bipolar disorder)
    • have a history of urinary retention
    • have angle-closure glaucoma or increased intraocular pressure
    • have schizophrenia (mental disorder in which the ability to interpret reality is impaired)
    • have a history of the convulsive disorder, with overt or latent seizure disorders
    • have paranoid symptomatology (mental disorder causing distrust and suspicion of others without adequate reason)
    • are scheduled for electroshock therapy

    Use in Paediatrics

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET should be used with caution in children and adolescents (below 18 years of age). Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

    Use in Geriatrics

    AXEPINE 100 TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years or above) especially in patients with impaired kidney or liver function. Your doctor may initiate the management with the lowest effective dose. Consult your doctor before taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug Interactions

    Before taking AXEPINE 100 TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

    • monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as phenelzine, selegiline, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine (used to manage depression)
    • anticholinergic drugs (medicines used to reduce the activity of acetylcholine) Ex. atropine
    • other CNS Depressants (medicines used to manage troubled sleeping, anxiety, panic attacks and seizures) such as barbiturates (Ex. phenobarbital)
    • quinidine, propafenone, flecainide (used to manage irregular heartbeat)
    • cimetidine (used to manage stomach ulcers)
    • chlorpromazine (used to manage the symptoms of schizophrenia)

    Overdosage

    If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of AXEPINE 100 TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are convulsions, status epilepticus (repeated seizures), coma, acidosis (excess acid build-up in the body), renal failure and acute tubular necrosis (with rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria).
