Introduction About ASTHAFEN TABLET
ASTHAFEN TABLET contains Ketotifen which belongs to the group of medicines called Antihistamines. It is used in prophylactic management of bronchial asthma and allergic conditions such as rhinitis (inflammation of the inside of the nose caused by an allergen like pollen, dust).
Bronchial asthma is a condition in which the airways narrow and swell, producing extra mucus. This can cause difficulty in breathing, trigger cough, wheezing and shortness of breath. Avoid consumption of alcohol during management with ASTHAFEN TABLET. It is not recommended for use in patients having epilepsy.
Before taking ASTHAFEN TABLET, inform your doctor if you are intolerant to certain sugars, have a history of epilepsy or diabetes. It is generally not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women. The most common side effects are agitation, irritability, inability to sleep and nervousness.

How ASTHAFEN TABLET Works
ASTHAFEN TABLET works by blocking histamine (a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms) and stops the release of mediators from cells involved in hypersensitivity reaction.
How to use ASTHAFEN TABLET
Take ASTHAFEN TABLET as advised by your physician.
For Tablet, Capsule: Swallow ASTHAFEN TABLET with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.
For Dispersible Tablet: Disperse ASTHAFEN TABLET in the specified quantity of water as mentioned in the label. Consume the mixture immediately after reconstitution.
Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of ASTHAFEN TABLET
Common
- agitation
- irritability
- inability to sleep (insomnia)
- nervousness
Uncommon
- dizziness
- burning sensation when passing urine and need to urinate frequently (cystitis)
- dry mouth
Rare
- drowsiness
- weight increased
Stop taking ASTHAFEN TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- skin rash, redness of the skin, blistering of the lips, eyes and mouth accompanied with fever, chills, headache, cough and body aches
- a yellowing of the skin and eyes, colored bowel motions, dark colored urine (signs of jaundice, liver disorder, hepatitis)
- have a fit(convulsions)
Warning & Precautions

Pregnancy
ASTHAFEN TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women or women planning to have a baby. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Breastfeeding
ASTHAFEN TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass in the breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or use machines while taking ASTHAFEN TABLET as you may feel drowsy and your reactions may be slower than usual.

Alcohol
Do not drink alcohol while taking ASTHAFEN TABLET.

Allergy
Do not take ASTHAFEN TABLET if you are allergic to Ketotifen or any other ingredients of this medicine.
Others
ASTHAFEN TABLET is not recommended for use if you:
- have epilepsy
Before taking ASTHAFEN TABLET, inform your doctor if you:
- have an intolerance to some sugars
- diabetes
- history of epilepsy
Use in Pediatrics:
Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition. Consult your doctor before taking ASTHAFEN TABLET.
Use in Geriatrics:
No evidence exists that elderly patients require different dosages or show different side effects from younger patients. Consult your doctor before taking ASTHAFEN TABLET.
Interactions
A. Drug - Drug interactions:
Before taking ASTHAFEN TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- oral medicines for diabetes (Ex. biguanides)
- for asthma (Ex. budesonide, beclomethasone)
- to manage sleeplessness, anxiety, depression (Ex. diazepam, lorazepam)
- antihistamines to manage allergic reactions (Ex. brompheniramine, azelastine)
- anticoagulants (Ex. warfarin)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of ASTHAFEN TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are blurred vision, confusion, convulsions, disorientation, dizziness, drowsiness (severe), faintness or lightheadedness when getting up from a lying or sitting position, fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat or pulse, hyperexcitability, loss of consciousness, palpitations, sweating, unusual tiredness or weakness.

Can I take medicine for diabetes while taking ASTHAFEN TABLET?
Thrombocytopenia may occur in patients taking ASTHAFEN TABLET at the same time as oral antidiabetic drugs(biguanides). Simultaneous administration of these drugs should therefore be avoided.
Can ASTHAFEN TABLET cause weight gain in asthma patients?
Yes, ASTHAFEN TABLET can cause an increase in appetite and hence weight gain. Consult your doctor before taking it for more information on this medicine.
Can ASTHAFEN TABLET affect my sleep cycle?
Yes, it may cause some people to become excited, irritable or nervous or to have trouble sleeping. These are symptoms of central nervous system stimulation and are especially likely to occur in children.
