Introduction About AMANTREL CAPSULE
AMANTREL CAPSULE contains Amantadine which belongs to the group of medicines called Dopamine agonists or Anti-viral agents. It is used in the management of Parkinson’s disease (a progressive nervous disease that causes tremor, muscular rigidity and slow imprecise movements), and manages various strains of influenza A virus (caused by the multiplication of the virus inside the body).
It is also used to manage shingles (herpes zoster) to reduce pain, which is a reactivation of chickenpox virus causing a painful rash and drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions (such as involuntary muscle contraction, tremors, stiff muscles, and involuntary facial movements caused by antipsychotics and other drugs).
Before taking AMANTREL CAPSULE inform your doctor if you have any problems related to kidney, liver or heart (which may cause shortness of breath or ankle swelling), any mental illness like schizophrenia (mental disorder) or dementia (memory loss) and glaucoma (increased pressure in the eyes).
AMANTREL CAPSULE is not recommended to be taken while you are pregnant or breast feeding. AMANTREL CAPSULE is not recommended for use in newborn and infants (below 1 year of age) and it should be used with caution in elderly patients (who are 65 years of age or older). Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.
The most common side effects of taking AMANTREL CAPSULE are loss of appetite, tiredness, dryness in the mouth, constipation and nausea or vomiting. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects worsen.
Uses Of AMANTREL CAPSULE
It is used in the management of the following disease conditions:
- Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (such as rigidity, tremors, muscle stiffness, balance disorders, shakiness)
- Drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions
- Shingles (herpes zoster) and influenza A viral infections
How AMANTREL CAPSULE Works
AMANTREL CAPSULE is a dopamine agonist and an anti-viral agent that manages Parkinson's disease and certain type of viral infections. As a dopamine agonist, it works by increasing the amount of dopamine, a chemical messenger in the brain which regulates the body movements. As an antiviral agent, it works against viruses to prevent their growth and multiplication. It also stops the viruses from releasing infectious chemicals (viral nucleic acid) to enter into the body which protects from influenza infection.
How to use AMANTREL CAPSULE
Take AMANTREL CAPSULE as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of AMANTREL CAPSULE
Common
- swollen ankles
- red blotchy spots on the skin
- loss of appetite, feeling tired
- anxiety, feeling overexcited
- hallucinations
- difficulty in controlling movements
- low blood pressure (causing symptoms like dizziness or fainting)
- nausea or vomiting
- difficulty concentrating
- feeling nervous
- difficulty sleeping, nightmares
- muscle pain
- headache, sweating
- slurred speech
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- dry mouth
- constipation
Uncommon
- blurred vision
Rare
- confusion
- disturbed thoughts or behaviour
- feeling hot and having muscle stiffness (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
- loss of bladder control (difficulty in passing urine or have a sudden urge to pass water)
- disorientation
- shakiness, difficulty moving
- diarrhoea
- skin rash
- itchiness or redness of eye
- corneal lesion, corneal oedema and reduced visual acuity
Stop taking AMANTREL CAPSULE and consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- dizziness
- light headedness or fainting
- convulsions (fits)
- impulse control disorder (drive or temptation to carry out certain activities that could harm yourself or others, addictive gambling, excessive eating or spending, an abnormally high sex drive or an increase in sexual thoughts or feelings)
How To Manage Side Effects
Constipation
Eat plenty of fiber rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly. If the symptom does not improve, consult your doctor.
Diarrhea
Drink lot of fluids, such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating high-fat or spicy foods. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to manage diarrhea and consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.
Dry Mouth
Sip water regularly and other sugar free liquids. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can make your mouth dry, use mouthwash that is used only for dry mouth. Limit your caffeine intake. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Headache
Drink ample amount of water and avoid skipping meals. Get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress free. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Nausea And Vomiting
Stick to simple meals while taking AMANTREL CAPSULE. Avoid eating oily rich, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Tiredness
Drink plenty of fluid and eat balanced diet and frequent meals. Do regular minimal exercise and follow regular sleep schedule. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Pregnancy
ContraindicatedAMANTREL CAPSULE is not recommended for use while you are pregnant. Consult your doctor before taking AMANTREL CAPSULE if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby.
Breastfeeding
ContraindicatedAMANTREL CAPSULE is not recommended for use while you are breast feeding as it may pass through breast milk and could harm the baby. Consult your doctor before taking it.
Driving and Using Machines
Use with CautionDo not drive or use machines after taking AMANTREL CAPSULE as it may cause side effects such as dizziness or visual disturbances that may affect your ability to drive and use machines. Consult your doctor before taking AMANTREL CAPSULE.
Alcohol
ContraindicatedDo not drink alcohol while taking AMANTREL CAPSULE as it may cause dizziness, confusion, light headedness and low blood pressure (especially when standing up from sitting or lying position).
Kidney

Liver

Allergy
ContraindicatedDo not take AMANTREL CAPSULE if you are allergic to Amantadine or any other ingredients of this medicine.
Heart Disease
Use with CautionAMANTREL CAPSULE should be taken with caution in patients with a history of disease involving the heart and blood vessels or suffering from heart problems or heart failure (which causes shortness of breath or ankle swelling). Consult with your doctor before taking it.
Use In Pediatrics
Consult your doctorAMANTREL CAPSULE is not recommended for use in newborn and infants (below 1 year of age). It is used in children (from 1 to 12 years of age). Your child’s doctor may adjust the dose based on the age and body weight. Consult child’s doctor for advice.
Use In Geriatrics
Use with CautionAMANTREL CAPSULE should be used with caution in elderly patients who are 65 years of age or older, and your doctor may initiate the management with the lowest effective dose in patients with kidney impairment, heart failure, peripheral oedema (swelling of legs or hands) or low blood pressure (especially when standing up from sitting or lying position). Consult with your doctor before taking AMANTREL CAPSULE.
Others
AMANTREL CAPSULE is not recommended for use if you:
- have convulsions (fits)
- ever had ulcer in the stomach or small intestine
Before taking AMANTREL CAPSULE inform your doctor if you:
- have any mental illness (such as schizophrenia or dementia)
- have increased eye pressure (glaucoma)
Interactions
A. Drug-drug interactions:
Before taking AMANTREL CAPSULE inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- Anti-parkinsonian agents (such as procyclidine, levodopa)
- hyoscine (used to manage stomach spasms or cramps)
- Anipsychotic agents (such as chlorpromazine, haloperidol, thioridazine)
- Diuretics (such as hydrochlorothiazide, amiloride, triamterene)
- quinidine (used in the management of irregular heartbeat)
- live attenuated influenza vaccine (used in the prevention of influenza)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of AMANTREL CAPSULE, consult with your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Overdosage symptoms of AMANTREL CAPSULE are overactive bodily reflexes, convulsions, extrapyramidal signs (such as inability to remain physically still, involuntary muscle contractions), muscle twitching, dilated pupils, difficulty swallowing, confusion, disorientation, delirium, hallucinations, hyperventilation, pulmonary oedema, respiratory distress, cardiac arrest, fast or irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, renal dysfunction and urinary retention.
