    Introduction About ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET

    ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET is a combination of Clonazepam and Melatonin which belongs to the group of medicines called Anticonvulsants and Sedatives respectively. It is used to manage epilepsy (fits), panic disorder, and certain types of phobia (fears). It can also be used in the management of sleep disorders (such as jet lag or sleeplessness (insomnia)) that is caused due to disturbance in the body’s biological day- and night- rhythm.

    It also helps the children with autism or Smith-Magenis syndrome (a genetic brain disease) to sleep faster and longer. Take ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET before meals or as directed by your physician.

    Before taking ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET, inform your doctor if you have any problems in your liver, kidney or heart. You must also inform your doctor if you have diabetes, weak muscles, any autoimmune disease, trouble breathing, previous history of drug abuse, alcohol abuse or depression as a precaution.

    Do not take ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET without consulting your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The most common side effects of taking ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET are dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, weak muscles, memory loss, headache, nausea, stomach upset, hair loss and low sex drive. Consult your doctor if any of these side effect troubles you.

    You must also inform your doctor immediately if you experience worsening of depression along with suicidal thoughts as a precaution.

    How ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET Works

    ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET contains two medicines namely clonazepam and melatonin. Clonazepam is an anticonvulsant medication. It works by suppressing the abnormal electrical activity within the brain cells. It reduces seizure outbursts, anxiousness and induces calmness.

    Melatonin helps in synchronizing the body’s sleep wakefulness cycle (day- and night- rhythm). This reduces the signs of sleep disorders and corrects sleep cycle among people travelling across different time zones. Collectively, this medicine calms your brain and helps you fall asleep.

    How to use ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET

    Take ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. It must be taken either 2 hours before or after a meal.

    Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease conditions.

    • high lipid levels in blood
    • increased sex drive
    • watery eyes, hot flushes

    • joint pain, muscle spasms
    • passing large amount of urine, thirst

    Stop taking ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • suicidal thoughts and behaviour
    • signs of allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swellling of the face, lips, tongue and throat which causes difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
    • changes in behavior (such as feeling agitated, restless, aggressive, irritable, violent or angry, false beliefs, nightmares and hallucinations or other inappropriate behavior)
    • fits
    • signs of heart problems (such as fast or irregular heart rate, chest pain, swollen ankles, fainting, dizziness upon standing)
    • breathing difficulties, chest pain, fast heartbeat
    • low RBC, WBC and platelet count in blood
    • excessive sleepiness
    • prolonged painful erections

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Dizziness Or Drowsiness

    Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Consult your doctor if your dizziness worsens.

    Headache

    Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

    Nausea And Vomiting

    Take ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.

    Pregnancy

    ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women, as it may harm the growing baby. Therefore, inform your doctor before taking it. Women of childbearing potential must use a suitable contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy while taking this medicine.

    Breastfeeding

    Contraindicated

    ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk to the nursing infant. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Others

    ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

    • have myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness)
    • have sleep apnea (breathing stops and starts during sleep)
    • have an history of alcoholism or drug abuse

    Before taking ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

    • have previously experienced depression with thoughts of committing suicide
    • are an alcoholic
    • have poor muscle control caused due to problems in nervous system
    • have porphyria (a rare inherited blood disorder)
    • are scheduled for any operation in the upcoming days
    • have an auto-immune disease
    • have diabetes
    • have an habit of smoking

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before taking ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine such as:

    • medicines used to manage epilepsy (such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, sodium valproate, primidone)
    • medicines used for pain relief (such as aspirin, celecoxib, tramadol, ibuprofen, diclofenac)
    • medicines used to manage high blood pressure (such as ramipril, candesartan, amlodipine, doxazosin)
    • medicines used to reduce anxiety and to induce sleep (such as alprazolam, midazolam, lorazepam, nitrazepam, temazepam, zaleplon, zolpidem, zopiclone)
    • muscle relaxants (used for muscle relaxation prior to surgeries) such as tubocurarine
    • cimetidine (a medicine used for managing stomach ulcers)
    • rifampicin (a medicine used to manage tuberculosis)
    • opioid analgesic medications (such as buprenorphine, morphine, codeine or propoxyphene, pethidine, fentanyl etc.)
    • cough medicines
    • fluvoxamine (an antidepressant)
    • psoralens (used for the management of skin disorders)
    • estrogens (used in contraceptives or hormone replacement preparations) such as estradiol, ethinylestradiol
    • quinolones (used in the management of bacterial infections) such as ciprofloxacin
    • warfarin (a medicine used to manage blood clots)

    B. Drug-Food interactions:

    ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET should not be taken with food.

    If you or anyone else accidentally took more ALTONIL PLUS 5 TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose might include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea low blood pressure and breathing difficulties.
