    Introduction About ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP

    ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP contains Erythromycin which belongs to the group of medicines called Macrolide antibiotics. It is used in the management of various bacterial infections such as throat and sinus infections, chest infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), eye and ear infections, mouth and dental infections, skin and tissue infections (such as acne), stomach and intestinal infections.

    Also, it is used to manage infection following burns, operations or dental procedures and manages other infections such as sexually transmitted diseases, bone infections or scarlet fever. Inform your doctor before taking any blood tests as ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP may interfere with the laboratory investigation. Do not stop taking ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP until your course is over without consulting your doctor.

    ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP is not recommended for use in patients with heart rhythm disorders or with family history of heart rhythm disorders or an abnormality of the electrocardiogram, low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood.   

    ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with liver or heart disease, myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness), have or ever had diarrhoea following the use of antibiotics.   

    The common side effects of taking ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP  are vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea and upper abdominal discomfort. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects worsen.

    Uses Of ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP

    Prevents and manage bacterial infections such as:

    • throat and sinus infections
    • chest infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia)
    • ear infections
    • mouth and dental infections
    • eye infections
    • skin and tissue infections (such as acne)
    • stomach and intestinal infections
    • prevention of infection following burns, operations or dental procedures
    • other infections (such as sexually transmitted diseases, bone infections or scarlet fever)  

    How ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP Works

    ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP contains erythromycin, which acts by blocking the synthesis of necessary proteins that are needed by bacteria to perform essential functions. As a result, it keeps the bacterial infection from spreading and the germs from multiplying.

    How to use ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP

    Take ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP as advised by your physician. Shake well before use. Use a measuring cup to properly measure a dose. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition. 

    Side Effects Of ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP

    Common

    • nausea, vomiting
    • diarrhoea
    • loss of appetite
    • upper abdominal discomfort
    • infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis
    • inflammation of pancreas

    Rare

    • bowel disease with diarrhoea and abdominal pain (pseudomembranous colitis)

    Stop taking ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • serious skin reaction (signs include red, scaly rash with bumps under the skin and blisters (exanthematous pustulosis))
    • allergic reactions (signs include swelling of the face, lips or throat, skin rashes, severe skin reactions including large fluid-filled blisters, sores, ulcers in the mouth or throat, fainting and difficulty in breathing)

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Headache

    Drink lot of fluids such as water or fruit juices to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid taking any medicine on your own for managing diarrhea. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

    Nausea And Vomiting

    Try to take ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich, fried or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

    Stomach Pain

    Rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or try to have smaller and frequent meals. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Do not self-manage on your own and consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

    Breastfeeding

    Use with Caution

    ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP should be used with caution in breastfeeding women as it is excreted into breast milk and may cause infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in breast-fed infants. Consult your doctor before taking ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP.

    Liver

    Use with Caution

    ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP.

    Allergy

    Contraindicated

    Do not take ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Erythromycin or any other ingredients of this medicine.

    Heart Disease

    Contraindicated

    ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP is not recommended for use in patients with heart rhythm disorders, abnormality of the electrocardiogram (electrical recording of the heart) called long QT syndrome. Consult your doctor before taking ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP.

    Others

    ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP is not recommended for use if you have:

    • low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood

    • have previously experienced diarrhoea following the use of antibiotics
    • sexually transmitted disease called syphilis
    • myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness)

    Use in paediatrics:

    ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP should be used with caution in children and adolescents and in children who feel irritable or vomit after being managed with antibiotics. Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

    Use in geriatrics:

    ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before taking ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before taking ALTHROCIN FORTE 250MG SYRUP, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines: 

    • clarithromycin, azithromycin, rifabutin or rifampicin (manages bacterial infection)
    • ergotamine, dihydroergotamine (used to manage migraine)
    • colchicine (manages gouty arthritis)
    • astemizole, terfenadine and mizolastine (manages allergies)
    • domperidone (manages nausea and vomiting)
    • pimozide (manages mental problems)
    • cisapride (used to manage stomach disorders)
    • lovastatin and simvastatin (used to help lower cholesterol levels)
    • saquinavir (manages viral infections)
    • oral contraceptives such as ethinylestradiol and norethindrone (used to manage pregnancy)
    • cimetidine and omeprazole (used to manage acid reflux and other related conditions)
    • fluconazole, ketoconazole and itraconazole (manages fungal infections)
    • digoxin, quinidine, disopyramide (manages heart problems)
    • cilostazol (manages peripheral circulation problems)
    • phenobarbital, midazolam, zopiclone, triazolam/alprazolam (used to help you sleep or relieve states of anxiety)
    • warfarin, acenocoumarol and rivaroxaban (used to manage or manage blood clots)
    • valproate, carbamazepine, phenytoin (used to control epilepsy)
    • theophylline (used to manage asthma)
    • ciclosporin, tacrolimus (used to manage organ rejection after transplantation)
    • bromocriptine (manages Parkinson’s disease)
    • alfentanil (used to provide pain relief)
    • methylprednisolone (used to manage inflammatory conditions)
    • st. john’s Wort (used to manage depression)
    • verapamil (used to manage high blood pressure and chest pain)
    • vinblastine (used to manage certain types of cancer)
    • sildenafil (manages erectile dysfunction)
    • tolterodine (used for manage symptoms of overactive bladder)
