Description
The Alpha Medicare Alpha Guedel Airway is a medical device used to maintain an open airway in unconscious patients. It is designed to prevent the tongue from obstructing the epiglottis, which could stop a person from breathing. This oropharyngeal airway is intended for short-term airway management, particularly in pre-hospital emergency care, during anaesthesia, or post-anaesthetic recovery. The Size 4 airway corresponds to a length of approximately 90mm and is suitable for adults.
Anatomically Curved Design: The device is shaped to follow the natural curvature of the tongue and pharynx, helping to maintain a clear passage for air. Reinforced Bite Block: Features an integral hard bite block that prevents the patient from biting their tongue and occluding the airway. Color-Coded for Size Identification: The flange is color-coded for straightforward recognition of the size, which is a common feature for Guedel airways. Atraumatic and Smooth Finish: Made from materials like non-toxic polyethylene or EVA to provide a soft surface finish with rounded edges, designed to minimize the risk of tissue damage during insertion. Sterile and for Single Use: Each airway is supplied in sterile packaging and is intended for single-patient use to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
Q: What is the primary function of a Guedel airway?
A: A Guedel airway is a medical device used to maintain an open airway in an unconscious person by preventing the tongue from blocking the throat. It is used for short-term airway management, often during anaesthesia or in emergency care.
Q: Who is the Size 4 Guedel airway intended for?
A: The Size 4 Guedel airway, typically measuring 90mm or 100mm, is generally intended for use in adults. Correct sizing is determined by a healthcare professional.
Q: Is the Alpha Guedel Airway a sterile, single-use product?
A: Yes, Guedel airways are typically supplied in sterile packaging and are intended for single-patient use to reduce the risk of cross-infection. They should not be cleaned or re-sterilized for reuse.
Q: What are some key features of this airway device?
A: It is made from a non-toxic polymer with soft, rounded edges to reduce the risk of trauma during insertion. It includes an integrated, color-coded bite block to prevent the patient from biting their tongue or obstructing the airway. The design also allows for the insertion of suction catheters.
Q: Should this device be used without professional medical guidance?
A: No, this device is intended for use by certified first responders, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and other health professionals. It should only be used on unconscious individuals, as it can trigger a gag reflex in conscious or semi-conscious persons.

Key Benefits
Maintains Airway Patency: The primary function is to keep the airway open by lifting the tongue away from the back of the throat, ensuring the patient can breathe. Facilitates Ventilation and Suctioning: Its hollow, tubular path allows for ventilation and enables the passage of suction catheters to clear secretions from the airway. Prevents Hypoxia: By securing an open airway in unconscious individuals, it helps prevent airway obstruction and a lack of oxygen (hypoxia).

Direction for Use/Dosage
This device should only be used by trained medical professionals. Select the correct size by measuring from the center of the patient's mouth (incisors) to the angle of the jaw. Clear the patient's mouth of any obstructions before insertion. With the patient in a supine position, insert the airway with the curve facing upwards towards the roof of the mouth. Gently advance the device until the tip is past the tongue, then rotate it 180 degrees to follow the natural curve of the pharynx. The flange should rest just outside the patient's lips. Confirm correct placement by observing chest movement and listening for clear airflow.

Safety Information/Precaution
For use in unconscious patients only; it may induce a gag reflex or vomiting in conscious or semi-conscious individuals. Consult a healthcare professional before use, especially if the patient has existing medical conditions. Incorrect sizing can be ineffective or cause harm, such as trauma to the larynx or airway obstruction. Inspect the device for any defects, damage, or contamination before use. Do not use if the sterile packaging is opened or damaged. This is a single-use device; do not clean, re-sterile, or reuse. If the patient is known to be sensitive or allergic to PVC or similar materials, do not use this device.
