    Introduction About ALKA SODA SACHET

    ALKA SODA SACHET contains Sodium Bicarbonate, which belongs to the group of medicines called alkalizers. It is used for the management of indigestion and metabolic acidosis (a condition in which the amount of acid in body fluids is increased, causing palpitations, vomiting, confusion, nausea, etc.) caused by severe kidney disorders, uncontrolled diabetes, severe lactic acidosis or severe dehydration. It is also used as a replacement therapy for severe diarrhoea and to reduce the occurrence of chemical phlebitis (irritation caused by too acidic I.V. drugs and fluids).

    ALKA SODA SACHET is not recommended for use in patients who have high alkali levels in the blood, low blood calcium levels or low levels of stomach acid. It is also not recommended in patients who have previously experienced heart failure, have kidney or liver problems, seizures, high blood pressure or breathing difficulties. Consult your doctor before taking ALKA SODA SACHET.

    ALKA SODA SACHET should only be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women when absolutely necessary. ALKA SODA SACHET is not recommended for use by children. The most common side effects after taking ALKA SODA SACHET are abdominal pain, flatulence (gas), high blood pressure, etc. Consult your doctor immediately if any of the side effects worsen.

    Uses Of ALKA SODA SACHET

    Manage:

    • indigestion
    • metabolic acidosis (condition in which acid amount in body fluid is increased) due to severe kidney disorder, uncontrolled diabetes, severe lactic acidosis, severe dehydration etc.
    • It is also indicated as replacement therapy in severe diarrhoea, for reducing incidence of chemical phlebitis (irritation caused due to I.V. drugs and fluids which are too acidic.

    How ALKA SODA SACHET Works

    ALKA SODA SACHET works by increasing plasma bicarbonate levels, which in result buffers excess hydrogen ion concentration and increases the pH and hence relieving symptoms of acidity and metabolic acidosis.

    How to use ALKA SODA SACHET

    Take ALKA SODA SACHET as advised by your physician. Dissolve spoonful of ALKA SODA SACHET in warm water and consume. Your doctor will decide the exact dose and duration of management for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of ALKA SODA SACHET

    Common

    • abdominal cramps
    • flatulence (gas)
    • high blood pressure

    Uncommon

    • muscles weakness and cramps due to alkalosis
    • hypokalaemia (low potassium levels)
    • fluid retention

    Rare

    Stop taking ALKA SODA SACHET and consult your doctor immediately in case you experience:

    • severe allergic reaction such as swelling in lips, face, neck, which may cause difficulty in breathing, skin rashes, hives

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Stomach pain:

    Try to rest and relax. Eat small meals but take frequently. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Contact your doctor in case the stomach pain does not improve.

    Pregnancy

    ALKA SODA SACHET should be used in pregnant women only when clearly necessary therefore consult your doctor before taking ALKA SODA SACHET.

    Breastfeeding

    ALKA SODA SACHET should be used in breastfeeding women only when clearly necessary as it may pass through breast milk therefore consult your doctor before taking ALKA SODA SACHET.

    Driving and Using Machines

    ALKA SODA SACHET have no effect on ability to drive or operating machinery.

    Kidney

    ALKA SODA SACHET is not recommended for use in patients who have kidney problems therefore consult your doctor before taking ALKA SODA SACHET.

    Liver

    ALKA SODA SACHET is not recommended for use in patients who have liver problems therefore consult your doctor before taking ALKA SODA SACHET.

    Allergy

    Do not take ALKA SODA SACHET if you are allergic to Sodium Bicarbonate or any other ingredients of this medicine.

    Lungs

    ALKA SODA SACHET is not recommended for use in patients who have breathing problems such as pulmonary oedema therefore consult your doctor before taking ALKA SODA SACHET.

    Heart Disease

    ALKA SODA SACHET is not recommended for use in patients who have suffered heart failure, high blood pressure therefore consult your doctor before taking ALKA SODA SACHET.

    Others

    ALKA SODA SACHET is not recommended for use if you have:

    • high alkali levels in blood
    • low blood calcium levels
    • low stomach acid
    • high blood pressure
    • seizures
    • been losing more chloride by vomiting or from Continuous gastrointestinal Suction
    • been following low sodium diet

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before taking ALKA SODA SACHET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • antibiotics such as rifampicin, tetracycline, benzyl penicillin potassium (medicines used for bacterial infections)
    • ketoconazole, itraconazole (medicine used for management of fungal infection)
    • phenothiazines, gabapentin, phenytoin (medicines used for management of anxiety or depression)
    • corticosteroids such as daflazacort (to manage swelling and inflammation or for allergic reactions)
    • lithium (for mental illness)
    • methotrexate (medicine used for management of certain types of tumours, psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis)
    • quinidine or dipyridamole (medicine used to manage heart rhythm disorders)
    • ephedrine (medicines used for management of breathing problems)
    • chloroquine (medicines used for management or management of malaria)
    • penicillamine (medicine used for management rheumatism)
    • dipyridamole (medicine used for management blood clots associated with heart problems)
    • adrenaline hydrochloride (medicine used for management of severe allergic reactions)
    • carmustine, nilotinib (medicines used in cancer management)
    • glycopyrronium bromide (a medicine used to reduce saliva secretion)
    • isoprenaline hydrochloride, digoxin or dipyridamole (medicines used management of various heart problems)
    • suxamethonium chloride (medicine used as muscle relaxant)
    • lithium (a medicine used for management of manic depression)
    • lansoprazole (a medicine used for management of stomach ulcers and acidity)
    • levothyroxine (a medicine used for management of hypoactive thyroid)
    • mycophenolate (a medicine used to stop transplant rejection)
    • rosuvastatin (a medicine used for management of high cholesterol levels)
    • hydrochloroquine (a medicine used for management of arthritis)
    • penicillamine (medicine used management of rheumatoid arthritis)
    • fexofenadine (a medicine used for management of allergic reactions)
    • sulpiride (medicine used for management of schizophrenia)
    • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, diflunisal (medicines used for pain management)
    • ACE inhibitors such as captopril, enalapril (medicines used for management of for heart failure or high blood pressure)
    • antivirals for viral infections such as atazanavir, tipranavir (medicines used for management of viral infections)
    • bisphosphonates (medicines used for management of osteoporosis)

    Overdosage:

    In case you or anybody else accidently take too much of ALKA SODA SACHET then consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose of ALKA SODA SACHET are shortness of breath, muscle weakness, uncontrolled shaking of body, unconsciousness.
