    Introduction About ALGEMER 5 TABLET

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET contains Donepezil which belongs to the group of medicines called Cholinesterase inhibitors. ALGEMER 5 TABLET is indicated for the management of mild to moderately severe Alzheimer’s dementia.

    Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder that causes dementia (a group of symptoms that affect the memory, thinking and social abilities of a person) by destroying the memory and other important mental functions in the brain which is characterized by memory loss, confusion, and behavioral changes.

    Before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET, inform your doctor if you are allergic to Donepezil, have asthma, heart, kidney, or liver disease.

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET is not recommended for use if you have severe liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking medicine.

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET is generally not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women unless it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET.

    The safety and effectiveness of ALGEMER 5 TABLET in pediatric patients have not been established.

    The most common side effects of taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET are diarrhoea, feeling sick, tiredness, difficulty in sleeping, common cold, loss of appetite, hallucinations, and aggressive behaviour. Consult your doctor if any of these above side effects get worse.

    • Used to manage mild to moderately severe Alzheimer’s dementia

    How ALGEMER 5 TABLET Works

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET belongs to cholinesterase inhibitor which works by increasing the levels of a chemical messenger (acetylcholine) involved in transmission of nerve signals. This improves memory and thinking. Memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease occurs due to disturbances of signal transmission in the brain.

    How to use ALGEMER 5 TABLET

    Take ALGEMER 5 TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow ALGEMER 5 TABLET with a glass of water and do not chew or crush the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of ALGEMER 5 TABLET

    Common

    • diarrhea
    • nausea
    • headache
    • muscle cramp
    • tiredness
    • difficulty in sleeping (insomnia)
    • common cold
    • loss of appetite
    • hallucinations
    • unusual dreams including nightmares
    • agitation
    • aggressive behaviour
    • fainting, dizziness
    • indigestion
    • vomiting
    • rash, itching
    • passing urine uncontrollably
    • pain

    Uncommon

    • slow heartbeat

    Rare

    • uncontrollable or shaky movements with stiffness on the face and tongue which may also involve limbs
    • irregular heartbeats

    Stop taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:                      

    • signs of stomach or duodenal ulcers such as stomach pain and indigestion
    • signs of bleeding in the stomach or intestines such as passing black tar like stools or visible blood from the rectum
    • seizures (fits) or convulsions
    • signs of hepatitis (liver damage) such as feeling or being sick, loss of appetite, feeling unwell, fever, itching, yellowing of the skin and eyes, and dark coloured urine
    • signs of a neuroleptic malignant syndrome (serious brain disorder) such as fever with muscle stiffness, sweating or a lowered level of consciousness
    • signs of rhabdomyolysis such as muscle weakness, tenderness or pain, particularly, if at the same time, you feel unwell, have a high temperature or have dark urine

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Diarrhoea:

    Drink lots of fluids, such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to manage diarrhea and consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

    Tiredness:

    Make sure you take rest and drink plenty of fluids. Avoid or limit the consumption of alcohol. Try to take ALGEMER 5 TABLET at a time when you can sit down (or lie down) when the symptoms are at their worst. Try not to drive or use tools or machinery until you feel well.

    Dizziness:

    Try to rest and relax and get enough sleep. Try to avoid driving or operating any tools or machines while you are feeling dizzy. Limit your consumption of alcohol, as it can aggravate your dizziness. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

    Indigestion:

    Try to reduce your consumption of tea, coffee, cola or alcohol and lose weight if you are obese. Avoid smoking and do not eat three to four hours before going to bed. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

    Vomiting:

    Try to take ALGEMER 5 TABLET with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

    Warning & Precautions

    Pregnancy

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy unless it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET.

    Breastfeeding

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET.

    Driving and Using Machines

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET may cause tiredness, dizziness and muscle cramp which could affect your ability to drive or operate machines. If you experience these side effects, do not drive or operate machines. Consult your doctor before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET.

    Alcohol

    Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET because it may alter the effect of this medicine.

    Kidney

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET should be used with caution in patients with mild kidney disease. Consult your doctor before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET.

    Liver

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver disease. It should be used with caution in patients with liver problems or hepatitis. Consult your doctor before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET.

    Allergy

    Do not take ALGEMER 5 TABLET if you are allergic to Donepezil or piperidine derivatives such as haloperidol, thioridazine, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

    Lungs

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET should be used with caution in patients with asthma or long-term lung disease. Consult your doctor before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET.

    Heart Disease

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET should be used with caution in patients with heart diseases such as irregular or very slow heartbeat, fast heartbeat, abnormal heart rhythms, family history of prolonged QT interval (fast and chaotic heartbeats), had heart failure, or heart attack. Consult your doctor before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET.

    Others

    Before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET, inform your doctor if you:                                   

    • have low levels of magnesium or potassium in your blood
    • have difficulty passing urine
    • have stomach or duodenal ulcers
    • have seizures (fits) or convulsions

    Use in pediatrics:

    The safety and effectiveness of ALGEMER 5 TABLET in pediatric patients have not been established. Consult your doctor before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET.

    Use in geriatrics:

    ALGEMER 5 TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years above). Consult your doctor before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug Interactions:

    Before taking ALGEMER 5 TABLET, inform your doctor, if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • medicines used for heart rhythm problems (Ex. amiodarone, sotalol)
    • medicines used for depression (Ex. citalopram, escitalopram, amitriptyline, fluoxetine)
    • medicines used for psychosis (Ex. pimozide, sertindole, ziprasidone)
    • medicines used for bacterial infections (Ex. clarithromycin, erythromycin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, rifampicin)
    • medicines used for fungal infections (Ex. ketoconazole)
    • other medicines used to manage Alzheimer’s disease (Ex. galantamine)
    • medicines used for arthritis (Ex. aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs such as ibuprofen, or diclofenac sodium)
    • anticholinergics medicines (Ex. tolterodine)
    • anticonvulsants (Ex. phenytoin, carbamazepine)
    • medicines used to manage heart condition (Ex. quinidine, beta-blockers such as propanolol and atenolol)
    • muscle relaxants (Ex. diazepam, succinylcholine)
    • general anesthetics (Ex. propofol, ketamine, thiopental)
    • medicines obtained without a prescription (Ex. herbal remedies)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of ALGEMER 5 TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are feeling and being sick, drooling, sweating, slow heart rate, low blood pressure (lightheadedness or dizziness when standing), breathing problems, losing consciousness and seizures (fits) or convulsions.
