Introduction About ALCET SYRUP
ALCET SYRUP contains Cetirizine which belongs to the group of medicines called Antihistamines. It is used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal rhinitis) which includes sneezing, irritated, runny or blocked nose and itchy, runny or watery eyes (in adults and children over the age of 2 years). It is also used to relieve symptoms of other allergies such as non-seasonal rhinitis (runny and itchy nose), skin allergies (such as rash, itching or hives) and pet or house mite allergies (in adults and children over the age of 6 years).
ALCET SYRUP is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney failure. Before taking ALCET SYRUP inform your doctor if you are due to have any allergy tests as this medicine may affect your allergy test results, have epilepsy or at increased risk of getting convulsions, or difficulty in passing urine (due to spinal, bladder or prostate problems). Avoid alcohol consumption while taking ALCET SYRUP to manage any unusual effects.
ALCET SYRUP should be used with caution in pregnant women only if clearly advised by the doctor and it is not recommended for use in breast-feeding women as it may pass through breast milk. ALCET SYRUP is not recommended for use in children (below 2 years of age) and it should be used with caution in elderly patients.
The most common side-effects of taking ALCET SYRUP are tiredness, headache, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth and sleepiness. Consult your doctor if any of the side effect worsens or does not improve.
Uses Of ALCET SYRUP
Relieves symptoms of:
- hay fever (seasonal rhinitis) (such as sneezing, irritated, runny or blocked nose and itchy, red or watery eyes) in adults and children over the age of 2 years
- other allergies such as non-seasonal allergies (runny and itchy nose), pet or house mite allergies and skin allergies (such as rashes, itching and hives) in adults and children over the age of 6 years
How ALCET SYRUP Works
ALCET SYRUP effectively works by blocking the action of a chemical called histamine which are naturally present in the body and are over produced during allergic reactions. This medicine reduces the elevated levels of histamine and thus relives the unpleasant symptoms of various allergic reactions in the body.
How to use ALCET SYRUP
Take ALCET SYRUP as advised by your physician. Shake well before use. Use measuring cup or spoon to properly measure the dose. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of ALCET SYRUP
Common
- somnolence (sleepiness)
- tiredness
- pharyngitis (sore throat) and rhinitis (common cold) mainly occurs in children
- diarrhoea
- nausea, dry mouth
- headache, dizziness
Uncommon
- agitation (anxiety or nervous excitement)
- paraesthesia (abnormal feelings of skin)
- stomach pain
- rashes and itchy skin
- extreme tiredness and malaise (feeling of discomfort)
Rare
- increased heart rate
- oedema (generalized swelling due to accumulation of fluid)
- fits (convulsions)
- weight gain
- urticaria (hives)
- aggression, confusion, hallucination and sleeplessness
Stop taking ALCET SYRUP and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- allergic reactions including severe reactions and angioedema (causes swelling of the face or throat)
How To Manage Side Effects

Diarrhea
Drink lot of fluids, such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating high-fat or spicy foods. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to manage diarrhea and consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Dizziness Or Drowsiness
Lie down until dizziness is gone, then get up slowly. Move slowly and carefully, do not hurry. Get adequate rest. Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Avoid coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Dry Mouth
Sip water regularly and other sugar free liquids. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can make your mouth dry, use mouthwash that is used only for dry mouth. Limit your caffeine intake. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Headache
Drink ample amount of water. Get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress free. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Nausea And Vomiting
Try to take ALCET SYRUP with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals and avoid eating oily rich, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Stomach Pain
Try to rest and relax. Try to consume food and drinks slowly and have smaller and frequent meals. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Contact your doctor immediately if are experiencing severe stomach pain.

Use In Geriatrics

Others
Before taking ALCET SYRUP inform your doctor if you:
- are suffering from fits (convulsions) or if you are already at a risk of having fits
- have any difficulties in passing urine (associated with bladder, prostate or spinal cord problems)
- have hereditary intolerance to some sugars
- are due to have an allergic test (as this medicine may affect your allergy test results)
Interactions
A. Drug-Drug Interactions:
Before taking ALCET SYRUP inform your doctor if you have received or taking any of the following medicines:
- theophylline (medicine used to manage heart conditions or breathing problems like asthma or bronchitis)
- barbiturates such as phenobarbital, methohexital (medicine used to manage sleep problems or used as anaesthetics)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of ALCET SYRUP, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are drowsiness or dizziness, and in children it may cause agitation or restlessness before drowsiness.
