INTRODUCTION

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET contains Cefpodoxime which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as acute otitis media (inflammation of middle ear leading to pain and fever), tonsilitis (sore throat, difficulty swallowing and tender lymph nodes), chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the airways present in the lungs leading to cough with mucus), community acquired pneumonia (inflammation of lungs leading to congestion), gonorrhoea (sexually transmitted infection in rectum, cervix or vagina).

It is also used to treat uncomplicated skin and structure infections (rashes, swelling, redness, pain, pus and itching), acute maxillary sinusitis (inflammation around the nasal cavity leading to headache and runny nose) and cystitis (strong, persistent urge to urinate with burning sensation and blood in the urine).

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET should be avoided if you are allergic to cefpodoxime or to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics (such as cefuroxime, cefixime) or if you had experienced immediate or severe hypersensitivity reaction (anaphylaxis) to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics (such as aztreonam).

Before taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET, inform your doctor if you have or ever had colitis, liver problems and impaired kidney function. Your doctor may monitor your blood count and liver enzymes level in blood tests while taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET.

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET is generally not recommended for use in pregnant and breast-feeding women unless clearly advised by the doctor. VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET is not recommended for use in infants less than 2 months of age and it should be used with caution in elderly patients, especially in patients with impaired kidney function.

The most common side effects of taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET are diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain and headache. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects worsen.

USES OF VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET

It is used in adults and adolescents to treat the following bacterial infections:

  • Acute otitis media
  • Pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  • Acute, uncomplicated urethral and cervical gonorrhoea
  • Acute, rectal gonococcal infections in women
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
  • Acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (cystitis)

HOW VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET WORKS

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET prevents infection by stopping or preventing the bacteria from multiplying by inhibiting their cell wall formation, which is essential for the bacteria to survive as it provides protection from the environment. This kind of action that kills bacteria is useful in treating various bacterial infections.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET as advised by your physician. Disperse the medicine in a teaspoonful (5 ml) of boiled and cooled water before taking the medicine. Do not swallow the medicine. Depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition, your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you.

SIDE EFFECTS OF VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET

COMMON

  • diarrhoea
  • nausea, vomiting
  • headache
  • stomach pain
  • skin rash including diaper rashes and fungal skin rashes

UNCOMMON

  • fungal, bacterial and parasitic infections
  • abdominal distention, malaise, fatigue, weakness, fever, chest pain, back pain, chills, generalized pain
  • abscess, allergic reaction and facial edema
  • localized edema and pain
  • congestive heart failure, palpitations, changes in blood pressure
  • hematoma (collection of blood outside the blood vessels)
  • migraine
  • vomiting, gastritis, dry mouth, flatulence, decreased appetite, constipation
  • ulcers in mouth, tongue disorders, tooth disorders, increased thirst and toothache
  • anaemia, dehydration and weight gain
  • dizziness, insomnia, somnolence, anxiety, shakiness, nervousness, impaired concentration, confusion, nightmares, headache, syncope
  • vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • cough, wheezing, breathing difficulty
  • skin rash with itching, hair loss and sunburn
  • taste alterations, eye irritation, taste loss and ear pain
  • urinary tract infections

RARE

  • changes in blood counts such as neutropenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, lymphocytosis, leukopenia and leucocytosis

Stop taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • severe diarrhoea due to pseudomembranous colitis
  • signs of allergic reaction (skin rash, joint pain, swallowing or breathing problems, swelling of your lips, face, throat or tongue)
  • signs of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (blistering or bleeding of the skin around the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, genitals and fever)
  • signs of toxic epidermal necrolysis (severe blistering rash where peeling of skin layer exposes the skin along with feeling of being unwell, fever, chills and muscle pain)
  • signs of erythema multiforme (skin rash or skin lesions with a pink/red ring and a pale centre which may be itchy, scaly or filled with fluid, especially on the palms or soles of your feet)
  • itching, redness, burning sensation in the vagina along with white vaginal discharge
  • signs of severe anemia type (infections occur more easily than usual, yellowing of the skin, eyes or mouth and feeling tired)
  • seizures mainly in patients with impaired kidney function
  • eyelid dermatitis (swelling and redness of eyelid followed by itchy and scaly skin)
  • signs of purpuric nephritis (bruises on legs along with kidney impairment)
  • early pregnancy loss, liver damage
  • pulmonary infiltrate with eosinophilia (presence of eosinophils inside the lungs)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea or vomiting:

Stick to simple meals while taking this medicine. Avoid eating oily rich, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.   

Headache:

Drink ample amount of water and avoid skipping meals. Get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress free. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Diarrhea:

Drink lot of fluids, such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating high-fat or spicy foods. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to treat diarrhea and consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Stomach pain:

Try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or try to have smaller meals more frequently. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not improve, consult your doctor.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET.

BREASTFEEDING

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET should be used with caution in breast-feeding women only if considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any machinery if you feel dizzy after taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET.

KIDNEY

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET should be taken with caution in patients with impaired kidney function. Consult your doctor before taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET.

LIVER

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET should be taken with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET.

ALLERGY

Do not take VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET if you are allergic to cefpodoxime or to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics (such as cefuroxime, cefixime) or if you had experienced immediate or severe allergic reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics such as aztreonam.

LUNGS

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with pneumonia or atypical pneumonia caused by certain organisms. Consult your doctor before taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET.

OTHERS

Before taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

  • have a history of gastrointestinal disease (particularly colitis)

Use in Paediatrics:

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET is not recommended for use in infants (less than 2 months of age). Therefore, consult your child’s doctor for advice.

Use in Geriatrics:

VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients, especially in patients with impaired kidney function. Consult your doctor before taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug - Drug interactions:

Before taking VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • Propantheline (used to treat gastric ulcers)
  • medicines used to treat indigestion (Ex. aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone, omeprazole)
  • medicines for treating gastric ulcers (Ex. ranitidine, cimetidine)
  • medicines used to treat high blood pressure or fluid retention (Ex. spironolactone, bumetanide, torsemide)
  • other medicines used to treat bacterial infections (Ex. gentamicin, streptomycin)
  • probenecid (used to prevent and treat gouty arthritis)
  • warfarin (used to prevent and treat blood clots)
  • oestrogen (reduces the vaginal symptoms of menopause)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Overdosage symptoms of VOTCEF 200 DISPERSIBLE TABLET are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, epigastric distress and encephalopathy may occur in patients with renal insufficiency.
