What is TICSTOP?

  • TICSTOP contains Tetrabenazine which belongs to a group of medicines called monoamine depletors
  • It work by decreasing the amount of certain natural substances in the brain (monoamines such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine), which are involved with nerve and muscle function

What TICSTOP is used for?

  • TICSTOP is used in the treatment of the involuntary movements (chorea) of Huntington’s disease

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:

  • have liver problems
  • have emotional or mental problems (for example, depression, nervousness, anxiety, anger, agitation, psychosis, suicidal thoughts)
  • have liver or heart disease
  • have any allergies
  • have breast cancer or a history of breast cancer
  • sleep a lot more or a lot less than usual
  • more or less hungry than usual or notice a big change in your body weight
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine


  • Consult your doctor before driving or using machines

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including

  • monoamine oxidase inhibitor medicine (selegiline, rasagiline)
  • reserpine
  • TICSTOP is a tablet that you take by mouth
  • Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor
  • You may take TICSTOP with or without food
  • Your doctor will increase your dose of TICSTOP each week for several weeks

If you take more TICSTOP

  • If you take too many TICSTOP, call your doctor or go to the nearest hospital right away

If you forget to take TICSTOP

  • Before starting TICSTOP, you should talk to your doctor about what to do if you miss a dose. If you miss a dose and it is time for your next dose, do not double the dose

If you stop taking TICSTOP

  • If you stop taking TICSTOP or miss a dose, your involuntary movements may return or worsen in 12 to 18 hours after the last dose
  • Tell your doctor if you stop taking TICSTOP for more than 5. Do not take another dose until you talk to your doctor
Very Rare

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • depression
  • suicidal thoughts or actions
  • neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS)
  • high fever
  • stiff muscles
  • problems thinking
  • very fast or uneven heartbeat
  • increased sweating
  • symptoms of Parkinsonism include: slight shaking, body stiffness, trouble moving or keeping your balance
  • dizziness due to blood pressure changes when you change position (orthostatic hypotension)
  • sleepiness (sedation)
  • trouble sleeping
  • depression
  • tiredness (fatigue)
  • anxiety
  • restlessness
  • agitation
  • nausea
