  • It is used for the treatment of severe infections, where other antibiotics are not effective

Talk to your Doctor if you:

  • are allergic or hypersensitive to any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have recently had or are going to have a vaccination
  • have problems with blood
  • have porphyria (an inherited iron disorder)
  • have liver or kidney problems
  • are elderly
  • have minor infection
  • Do not take this medicine during pregnancy or while breast feeding, as it may harm your baby
  • If you are pregnant, or breastfeeding think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • This medicine is not recommended to children and adolescents, consult your doctor for advice
  • This medicine are unlikely affect your ability to drive or use machinery

Tell your doctor if you are taking,

  • paracetamol (used for pain and fever)
  • anticoagulants (used to thin the blood and prevent clotting)
  • drugs used to treat diabetes
  • drugs used to treat epilepsy
  • ciclosporin and tacrolimus (used to suppress the immune system and prevent the rejection of organs after transplant)
  • estrogens (used for contraception or hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • hydroxocobalamin (used to treat conditions caused by vitamin B12 deficiency)
  • medicines used to treat cancer
  • drugs used to treat mental problems
  • antiretrovirals: zidovudine, lamivudine, abacavir
  • propylthiouracil (used to treat an over-active thyroid)
  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you

If you take more STARPHENICOL 500MG

  • If you take more, than prescribed dose, contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital immediately

If you forget to take STARPHENICOL 500MG

  • If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose skip the missed dose and take your next scheduled dose at the correct time
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose

If you stop taking STARPHENICOL 500MG

  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Very Rare
  • allergic reaction: red raised lumps (hives), rashes, itching, swelling of the hands, feet, face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty in swallowing or breathing
  • fatigue, blackouts
  • fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, dizziness, vomiting and palpitations
  • grey baby syndrome (new-born or premature infants, where the skin appears grey, and the infant is listless and weak)
  • changes in blood due to depression of the bone marrow such as altered numbers of white blood cells, red blood cells or blood platelets
  • unexplained bleeding, bruising, increased risk of infections, sore throat, fever, weakness, breathlessness, pale skin or general illness
  • inflammation of the nerves of the eye causing blurred vision
  • ear problems like hearing loss, ringing in the ears, or a feeling of dizziness or spinning (vertigo)
  • nausea, vomiting
  • inflammation of the mouth and tongue
  • diarrhoea, inflammation of the small intestine and the colon
