PTU 50MG TABLET contains Propylthiouracil which belongs to the group of medicines called Antithyroid agents. PTU 50MG TABLET is used to treat hyperthyroidism, which occurs due to excess production of thyroxine hormone in affected individuals.
PTU 50MG TABLET is also used to treat Grave’s disease, thyrotoxic crisis, and thyrotoxicosis which are conditions that occur when thyroid hormone is produced extremely high in affected individuals. The medicine is also used to lower very high levels of thyroid hormone in patients scheduled for surgery, and/or radioactive iodine treatment.
PTU 50MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients allergic to Propylthiouracil. Before taking PTU 50MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are intolerant to certain sugars such as lactose, and/or have kidney/liver problems.
PTU 50MG TABLET should be used with caution during pregnancy and in women planning for pregnancy only if it is clearly necessary. It is also advised to be used with caution in breastfeeding women.
PTU 50MG TABLET is advised to be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged 6 to 18 years) and is also advised to be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above) after consulting the doctor.
The most common side effects of taking PTU 50MG TABLET are stomach upset, and rash. Consult your doctor if any of these symptoms worsens.
PTU 50MG TABLET works by inhibiting the production of thyroid hormone in the thyroid gland which results in low thyroxine hormone level in the body thus treating hyperthyroidism and its associated symptoms in affected individuals.
Take PTU 50MG TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight, and disease condition.
