PILOMAX 5MG contains pilocarpine which belongs to the group of medicines called muscarinic acetylcholine agonists (parasympathomimetic agents). It is used to treat xerostomia (dry mouth) in patients receiving radiotherapy for cancer of the head or neck. It can also be used to overcome dryness and itching of mouth and/or eyes in patients with Sjögren’s syndrome (an auto-immune affecting the lacrimal or salivary gland).

Pilocarpine works by improving the secretion such as gastric juices, salivation, lacrimation, sweating and mucus. Your doctor will regularly check your eyes before and during treatment with pilocarpine, particularly if you have had any eye disorders. This medicine may cause excessive sweating to you. So, try to take more fluids such as water or juices. If it does not help, and if you feel more dehydrated contact your doctor immediately.

The most common side effects of this medicine are flu-like symptoms, excessive salivation or lacrimation, headache and dizziness. Contact your doctor if any of the symptoms bothers you. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have any liver, kidney, lung or heart problems. PILOMAX 5MG is not recommended for use in pregnant or lactating mothers and in children (2-17 years). Consult your doctor before taking.

  • Treats xerostomia (induced by radiotherapy or Sjögren’s syndrome)

Pilocarpine is an alkaloid parasympathomimetic agent. Following oral administration, it binds to the muscarinic (M3) receptor expressed in the gastric glands, salivary glands, and smooth muscle cells of eyes and enhance their secretions. By stimulating the M3 receptors present on the salivary glands and eyes, it improves salivation and tear production which helps to relieve the dryness of mouth and eyes.
