What PENTASA is used for?

  • It is used for the treatment of mild to moderate attacks of ulcerative colitis in which the lining of the intestine bleed, becomes inflamed and becomes perforated
  • It helps to reduce the inflammation and the painful symptoms, prevent further episodes (flares) of ulcerative colitis

  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
  • PENTASA Suppositories are available in two strengths and contain either 250mg or 500mg of mesalazine

Dose for adults and the elderly:

Your doctor will have instructed you to use either

  • three to six 250mg suppositories a day with the last dose at bedtime, or one to three 500mg suppositories a day with the last dose at bedtime

 A suppository should be inserted into the anal passage (rectum) as described below:

  • Empty your bowels, if necessary, and wash your hands
  • Remove the plastic wrapping from the suppository
  • Squat or bend forward
  • Gently, but firmly, place the suppository (pointed end first) into your back passage
  • If necessary, grease the tip of the suppository with petroleum jelly
  • Wash your hands again
  • Try not to empty your bowels for at least an hour after inserting the suppository

If you use more PENTASA 

  • If you use too much medicine or accidentally swallowed a suppository, drink plenty of water tell your doctor immediately or go to your nearest hospital

If you forget to use PENTASA 

  • If you forget to insert a suppository at the required time, use them as soon as you remember and continue using your suppositories as before
  • Do not use more than two suppositories in one hour

If you stop using PENTASA

  • Keep using the suppositories until your prescribed course is finished
