Introduction About MEFTAL P TABLET
MEFTAL P TABLET contains Mefenamic acid which belongs to the group of medicines called Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is used to relieve the symptoms of inflammation such as redness and swelling. It can be used to manage pain and discomfort caused due to arthritis (inflammation of joints) muscular diseases or rheumatoid disorders (inflammatory disorders affecting the muscles and joints). It can also be used in the management of headache, muscle pain, tooth ache, post operative pain, childbirth pain, fever in children and painful or heavy periods.
Your doctor may monitor your kidney or liver function before and during the management to make sure they are functioning properly. Your doctor may also suggest you perform blood tests during the management to check your health condition.
MEFTAL P TABLET is not recommended for use in patients have or ever had stomach or intestinal conditions such as stomach ulcer, bleeding in the stomach, severe gastritis (inflammation of lining of the stomach) and inflammatory diseases of the intestine such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking MEFTAL P TABLET as it may increase your risk of stomach bleeding.
MEFTAL P TABLET is not recommended in patients having severe kidney, liver and heart problems. Consult your doctor before taking it.
MEFTAL P TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women particularly in the last 3 months of pregnancy as this may delay the onset of labour and prolong its duration It is not recommended among breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking it.
MEFTAL P TABLET is not recommended in children and adolescents below 12 years of age. MEFTAL P TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged over 65 years). Consult your doctor before taking.
The most common side effects of MEFTAL P TABLET are abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation. Consult your physician if any of the side effects bothers you.
Uses Of MEFTAL P TABLET
It is used to manage:
- redness and swelling caused due to inflammation in the body
- pain and discomfort caused due to arthritis, muscular disorders and rheumatoid disorders
- headache, muscle ache tooth ache, post operative pain and pain during childbirth
- fever (in children)
- heavy and painful periods
How MEFTAL P TABLET Works
MEFTAL P TABLET works by binding to certain receptors in the body where it blocks the action of a particular chemical called prostaglandins in the body. Thus, it relieves pain, redness and swelling associated with various inflammatory conditions of the body.
How to use MEFTAL P TABLET
Always take MEFTAL P TABLET as advised by your physician.
For Tablet: Swallow MEFTAL P TABLET with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.
For Dispersible Tablet: Disperse MEFTAL P TABLET in the specified quantity of water as mentioned in the label. Consume the mixture immediately after reconstitution.
Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition. Continue to take MEFTAL P TABLET for the stipulated duration prescribed by your doctor to achieve better results.
Side Effects Of MEFTAL P TABLET
Common

Rare
Stop taking MEFTAL P TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- signs of allergic reactions (such as difficulty in breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, lips tongue or throat, severe skin itching, red rashes or raised lumps, blistering of the mouth, eyes and genital area, patchy areas of rash, peeling of skin)
- diarrhoea, passing blood in the stools, passing black tarry stools
- vomiting of blood or dark particles similar to coffee grounds
- signs of stomach problems (such as indigestion or heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting)
- signs of anaemia (such as feeling tired, breathless and paleness, sore throat, mouth ulcers, repeated infections)
- signs of low sodium levels (such as headache, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, muscle cramps
- sudden headache, stiff neck, fever, sensitivity to bright light, drowsiness, muscle pain, with or without a rash
- signs of kidney problems (such as fever, rash, nausea, aches and pains, passing more or less urine than usual, passing red urine or urination during night)
- sudden loss or blurring of vision, loss of colour vision, eye pain which increases with eye movement)
- signs of high blood pressure (such as headache, in particular on waking in the morning)
- signs of inflammation of pancreas (such as pain behind the ribs radiating towards the back, often worse when lying down, nausea, vomiting, fever)
- signs of liver problems (such as yellowing of your skin or eyes, pale faeces, dark urine, unexplained persistent nausea, stomach problems, loss of appetite or unusual tiredness)
- inflammation of colon and Crohn’s disease (inflammation of digestive tract)
How To Manage Side Effects
Nausea or Vomiting:
Take this medicine with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods.
Flatulence:
Eat smaller and frequent meals. Eat and drink slowly and exercise regularly. If the symptoms does not improve. consult your doctor.
Constipation:
Eat plenty of fibre rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly.
Diarrhoea:
Drink plenty of fluids, to keep yourself hydrated. Do not consume any medicine on your own without consulting your doctor.
Stomach pain:
Try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor.
Skin rash:
Avoid hot bathing because hot water can irritate your skin further. Do not scratch the affected area. Use protective clothing when going outdoors. Regularly moisturize your skin. Consult your doctor if the symptom worsens.

Pregnancy
MEFTAL P TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women particularly in the last 3 months of pregnancy as they may delay the onset of labour and prolong its duration. Consult your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.

Breastfeeding

Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue or vision problems after taking MEFTAL P TABLET.

Alcohol
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking MEFTAL P TABLET because it may increase your risk of stomach bleeding.

Kidney
MEFTAL P TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe kidney problems. Consult your doctor taking it.

Liver
MEFTAL P TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having with severe liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking.

Allergy
Do not take MEFTAL P TABLET if you are allergic to Mefenamic acid or any other anti-inflammatory medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen, celecoxib.

Heart Disease
MEFTAL P TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe heart problems or have just had any heart bypass surgery. It should be used with caution in patients having high blood pressure. Consult your doctor before taking.
Others
MEFTAL P TABLET is not recommended for use if you:
- have or ever had stomach or intestinal conditions such as stomach ulcer, bleeding in the stomach or severe gastritis
- have any inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
Before taking MEFTAL P TABLET, inform your doctor if you:
- have any bleeding disorders or you are going to have any surgeries
- have asthma or history of asthma
- have any connective tissue disorder such as systemic lupus erythematosus
- have epilepsy (fits)
- have a history of stroke (condition causing blood clots in the brain due to reduced supply of blood and oxygen to the brain)
- have smoking habit
- have diabetes (high blood sugar)
- have high cholesterol (increased accumulation of fat in the blood)
Use in paediatrics:
MEFTAL P TABLET not recommended for use in children and adolescents (under 12 years of age). Consult your doctor before taking.
Use in geriatrics:
MEFTAL P TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged over 65 years). Consult your doctor before taking.

A. Drug - Drug interactions:
Before taking MEFTAL P TABLET tell your doctor if you’re taking any of the following medicine:
- corticosteroids (medicines used to manage inflammation) Ex. prednisone, hydrocortisone
- anti-platelets (medicine used to manage clotting of blood) Ex. warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel
- anti-depressants (medicines used to manage depression and mood swings) Ex. paroxetine, lithium, mifepristone
- anti-inflammatory agents (medicines used to manage inflammation) Ex. dicofenac, celecoxib
- medicines used to manage high blood pressure and other heart problems (Ex. atenolol, ramipril, valsartan, digoxin, sotalol, diltiazem
- diuretics (medicines used to manage water retention) Ex. furosemide
- medicines used to manage diabetes (high blood sugar) Ex. glipizide, glibenclamide
- medicines used to suppress immune system (Ex. ciclosporin, tacrolimus, methotrexate)
- quinolone antibiotics (medicines used to manage bacterial infections) Ex. moxifloxacin, ciprofloxacin
- aminoglycoside antibiotics (medicines used to manage bacterial infections) Ex. gentamycin, neomycin
- medicine used to manage HIV (Ex. zidovudine)

Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of MEFTAL P TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are headache, abdominal pain (pain in your stomach) or other abnormal stomach symptoms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, disorientation, excitation, tiredness, fainting and ringing in ears.
