What LOPAR is used for?

It can be used for the treatment of,

  • sudden, short-lived (acute) diarrhoea in adults and children over 12 years of age
  • diarrhoea associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), in adults aged 18 years and over

Talk to your Doctor, if you:

  • are allergic to any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have a medical condition that causes you to suffer from constipation (reduced frequency of bowel movements) such as a blockage in your intestines or where constipation may cause a problem
  • suffer from an inflamed intestine or inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease)
  • have abdominal pain, inflammation or diarrhoea is caused by bacteria such as Salmonella, Shigella or Campylobacter
  • have severe diarrhoea after taking antibiotics
  • suffer from liver problems
  • are aged 40 or over
  • have recently passed blood from the bowel
  • have difficulty or pain passing urine
  • have recently travelled abroad
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • Consult your doctor for advice before giving this medicine to your children
  • Do not drive or operate any machines while taking this medicine as it may cause drowsiness or dizziness

Tell your doctor if you are taking,

  • quinidine (used to treat abnormal heart rhythms or malaria)
  • ritonavir (used to treat HIV)
  • drugs used to treat fungal infections
  • gemfibrozil (helps reduce cholesterol and triglycerides (fatty acids) in the blood)
  • desmopressin (used to treat excessive urination)
  • medicine being taken for any condition affecting your stomach
  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
  • Swallow the medicine whole (do not chew) with some water
  • It is important to drink more fluids than you normally would during treatment with this medicine to replace the fluids and salts lost  

If you take more LOPAR

  • If you have taken too much medicine than your prescribed dose, contact your doctor or go to nearest hospital immediately
  • Symptoms of overdose: increased and irregular heartbeat, changes to your heartbeat, muscle stiffness, uncoordinated movements, drowsiness, difficulty urinating, or weak breathing constipation, sleepiness or slower breathing

If you forget to take LOPAR

  • If you forget to take a dose, take the next dose as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose

If you stop taking LOPAR

  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Very Rare
  • headache
  • constipation, nausea, vomiting
  • feeling sleepy or drowsy
  • stomach pain, stomach discomfort, upper stomach pain, indigestion
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • rash
  • anaphylaxis, itchy rash, shortness of breath, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat (angioedema)
  • skin rash, which may blister, and looks like small targets (central dark spots surrounded by a paler area, with dark ring around the edge) (erythema multiforme)
  • a widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin, particularly around the mouth, nose, eyes and genitals (Stevens Johnson Syndrome)
  • loss of consciousness or reduced level of consciousness (passing out, feeling faint or less alert), uncoordinated movements
  • abdominal pain/tenderness, fever and rapid heart rate (widening of the large intestine
  • a blockage in the intestine (ileus), cause a lack of bowel movement constipation or flatulence with abdominal pain or bloating, feeling or being sick especially after meals, with excessive belching
  • inability to pass urine
  • burning sensation in the lips, tongue or mouth (glossodynia)
  • tense or tight muscles
  • narrowing of the pupils in your eye (miosis)
