It is used to help keep the pupil open during surgery or after eye surgery or injury, to control pain and/or inflammation, to reduce the symptoms such as red, runny or itchy eyes associated with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (hay fever).

Prostaglandins plays an essential role in many inflammatory processes of the eye and appear to play a role in the miotic response during ocular surgery.
