What is EXELON?

  • EXELON contains rivastigmine which belongs to a class of substances called cholinesterase inhibitors
  • It works by blocking the enzymes that break down acetylcholine into acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, thereby increasing the levels of acetylcholine to be increased in the brain, helping to reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you: 

  • are allergic to rivastigmine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have or ever had irregular or slow heartbeat
  • have or ever had stomach ulcer
  • have or ever had asthma or severe respiratory disease
  • have or ever had difficulties in passing urine
  • have or ever had seizures(fits)
  • have gastro-intestinal reactions such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
  • have a low body weight
  • suffer from trembling
  • have liver problem
  • are undergoing surgery

  • EXELON may cause dizziness and somnolence, mainly at the start of treatment or when increasing the dose
  • If you feel dizzy or sleepy, do not drive or use machines

  • medicines with similar effects such as (cholinomimetic agents)
  • anticholinergic medicines (used to relieve stomach cramps or spasms, to treat Parkinson’s disease or to prevent travel sickness)

  • Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
  • Do not take the EXELON Patch orally
  • You must remove the previous day’s EXELON before applying a new one
  • Do not cut the patch into pieces
  • Treatment usually starts with the EXELON 4.6 mg/24 hours, and after several weeks many patients move to EXELON 9.5 mg/24 hours as the usual daily dose
  • The patch should be replaced by a new one after 24 hours
  • If you have not been applying the EXELON for several days do not apply the next patch before you have talked to your doctor
